Twin Moon - Chapter 286 - My Sister, My Problem
Zelena.
Back at the house, I found Roe in the kitchen. It's almost like she doesn’t like the other rooms of the house, besides maybe the library. She could have gone back to bed, no one would have thought any less of her for it. But no, even in the middle of the night, Roe will always find a way to busy herself with cooking.
“Hi” I said as I sat on a stool at the bench,
“Zelena, sweetheart, are you doing okay?” she asked while putting down the knife she was using to slice a giant watermelon. I pulled a slice off the cutting board and took a quick bite before smiling.
“I’ll be alright” I answered her honestly. She narrowed her eyes and put her hand on her apron covered hip. She didn’t even need to say anything, she just looked at me with that motherly stare.
“Really Roe, I know what needs to be done. I understand it now” I told her with a nod. She stood up straight, dropping her hand and looking at me with concern.
“What do you mean?” she asked shakily. I put the rind of the watermelon back on the cutting board and stood up.
“Where’s Mum?” I asked, ignoring her last question,
“She went for a walk. She’s struggling with the news” Roe said while still studying me intently,
“And Gunner?” I quickly added,
“Still in the hall”
“Thanks, Roe” I quipped and headed for the door,
“Zelena, wait” she called, but I was already through the door. I have a feeling I know what she wanted to say. ‘We can find a way around it’ and ‘We can get through to her’ or ‘Everything will be okay’. And it will be okay, I'm going to make sure everyone will be okay. I have one chance.
I pushed open the door of the hall and let it close with a thud behind me. Gunner and all the other men were still gathered around the table. Gunner stood at the head, while the others were all seated, giving him their undivided attention. The conversation stopped when I came in and all eyes were on me as I walked over to Gunner’s side. I pulled his shoulder down so that I could reach the side of his face, and gently pressed my lips to his cheek.
“Where are you up to?” I asked as I slowly looked over the map on the table.
“Zee?” he questioned with a raised brow, not seeming to understand my question.
“Your plan, what have you got so far?” I repeated. Gunner sighed and turned to face me a little more and placed his hand on my hip.
“Zee, you don’t need to be here for this” he said gently.
“Of course I need to be here” I scoffed and pushed his hand away.
“Zelena, we’re talking about capturing your twin sister” Smith said, pulling my attention from Gunner’s concerned face.
“I’m aware of that” I responded in a ‘duh’ kind of tone.
“Babe, we can handle it. Go back to bed” Gunner said while taking my hand in a firm but gentle grip. He began to pull toward him as if to lead me out of the room, and that’s when my anger boiled over. I whipped my hand from his and slammed my fist on the tabletop. A wave of energy flew out from the contact point, hitting everyone sitting around the table.
“It’s my prophecy, my sister, and my problem” I yelled as I glared out at all of the shocked faces,
“If any of you have an issue with that, there’s the door” I snarled angrily while pointing at the door behind me. There was no response for a moment, apart from my harsh breathing, the room was silent.
“If you wish, love” Gunner broke the ice and kissed my lips. The sparks danced across my face and calmed me back down again instantly.
“Can one of you please tell me where you’re at?” I asked politely with a hint of authority in my voice. I slowly sat down in my chair to Gunner’s left and crossed my right knee over my other.
“The warriors haven’t found any trace of her yet. I gave the order from them to start looking closer to the pack border” Smith spoke from his seat,
“That far, really?” I questioned,
“Well, we don’t have a lot to go on. It looks like she left the area” he shrugged.
“She didn’t leave” I said back casually,
“How do you know that?” Gunner asked looking down at me,
“Because she won’t leave until she’s finished what she came to do” I answered like it was obvious. Clearly, as seen on the questioning faces around the table, they didn’t seem to think it was so obvious.
“And that is what exactly?” Felix interjected. I took a deep breath and calmed myself, then turned to look at him.
“To kill all the Weres in Tri-Moon" I told them all,
“Before she moves on to the next closest pack” I continued. I turned to Gunner and explained further.
“That would be Blue Moon, Tobias’s old pack. No?”.
He didn’t answer for a moment, just enough time for the tension in the room to thicken to near suffocating levels.
“You know this how?” Smith growled lowly.
“Because it’s what she’s been doing in Russia. And who knows where else, she’s probably been killing Weres all over the place. She has been making her way through the packs, looking for me”.
“Zee, we don’t know for sure that it’s her” Gunner said while rubbing his fingers over my hand. I rolled my eyes and pinched the bridge of my nose. I know he just wants to protect me and not get me upset, but denying the truth isn’t going to do anyone any good.
“Gunner, you know it as well as I do. You spent time with her on the way here, you got to know her before anyone else. Tell me truthfully, do you actually believe that it’s not her?” I snapped and looked up at him. He hesitated, his eye’s flicked all over the place and he opened and closed his mouth a couple of times. He was trying to convince himself it wasn’t true. As much as I hate it, he grew to care for her in the short time they spent together.
“Zee...” he finally drawled out. The big loveable fool. I cursed and stood up again and looked at everyone at the table. Smith, Lupus, Felix, Daniel, the commander who I still can’t remember.
“Let’s be serious. You all know that I'm right, why else would you be in here planning to capture her. You’re putting the pieces together, I can see it. The prophecy. The darkness. The mysterious angry twin that shows up out of nowhere. Of course it’s her. And I'm not the only one that knows it, you all do too”.
When nobody answered I slowly sat back down and crossed my hands over my lap. Gunner’s brows were drawn together as he frowned at the table. Smith was looking away from me, also deeply in thought. Lupus looked like the only one that didn’t need to think about it. He was nodding along, determined anger painting his face. This was his pack for a long time, it makes sense that he would be so ready to protect it. As I looked at the important men in my life, I realised one was missing. I wonder where Tobias is, it’s not like him to miss something like this. I reached out to him through our bond.
***Tobias?***
I flashed. But nothing came back, just emptiness.
***Tobias, is everything okay?***
I tried again. But still no response. If something had gone wrong, we would have been alerted. Tobias is a large Were, not easily hidden or unnoticed. But he fainted, just a couple of hours ago. Maybe there is something really wrong, maybe he is unconscious someone out in the forest.
***Tobias!***
I yelled through the flash, but still got nothing back. I don’t like this, something is up. I came back to the room while they were talking about the search parties spreading out towards the borders.
“Where’s Tobias?” I asked Gunner a little urgently.
“He was with Elaine and Venus last I heard” he answered casually. I bit my lip and looked over at Smith. He was talking with Felix, but his eyes were on me.
“Did you see him? Was he alright?” I asked Gunner on a whisper. That piqued his interest, and he crouched down next to my chair.
“What’s going on?” he whispered while twirling his fingers around mine.
“He isn’t answering my flash, and earlier he… um. He… I don’t know, he fainted or something” I mumbled out while eyeing Smith. Maybe he knows something. Fuck. I should have checked in on him, I knew he wasn’t okay, and I still let him walk away. Gunner cupped my cheek and brought my gaze back to his.
“He’ll be fine, he’s the strongest Were I know” he said soothingly,
“Yeah, but…”
“But nothing, he’s probably just asleep, like you should be. It is three in the morning after all” he smiled a rubbed his thumb over the corner of my mouth. I swallowed my argument and nodded. Gunner leaned over and pressed his lips to mine before standing up completely. He returned to the head of the table and continued on with the conversation.
