Mother of the Moon - Chapter 162 - What Have I Done

Lunaya.

Alyse was avoiding me. I tried to talk to her, to apologise, but she just said it was fine and then walked away again. Three times I've tried to get her alone. Three times she has brushed me off. I was too harsh with her, I knew that. But fuck, I just wish that she’d let me apologise. The idea that I have hurt her is killing me. There may be a lot going on right now, and a lot still to come. I just really don’t like the thought of going into a fight with our relationship the way it is. I need to make it right, before we leave.
Night fell not two hours ago, and the Tri-Moon village is a constant stream of activity. After the second meeting a more thorough battle plan was arranged and communicated to the incoming fighters. Elaine confirmed that Luna Eclipse had landed and were on the road. The other packs had begun their journey to the Causeway. Alpha Ambrose has proven himself to be a very capable strategist, his mind for war and planning is both incredibly admirable, and terrifying. But I have noticed the amount of tension and hostility shown between him and Lupus. I think it has something to do with the flirting and sexual chemistry I picked up on between Roe and Alpha Ambrose. It's not my place, but hot damn am I curious to know what happened there.
For the time being, Gunner is to stay in the cell while we go south to Origin Wolf. I don’t like it. I probably should be happy that he is locked in a cell. After all, he did hurt my daughter. But I'm not convinced that was all on Gunner. Artemis made himself quite popular at Tri-Moon. He didn’t talk a lot, but he had his hand in almost everything. He was involved with almost all of Zelena’s training, something that really bugs me. Training her was supposed to be up to me. But Lupus, Roe and Cole, have all confirmed that Artemis made sure that he was close with Gunner. He had his ear and Gunner trusted him enough to ask for his council. I can only imagine what the bastard was putting in his head. Above all, something Lupus said has stuck with me. Artemis had access to aconite. He tried to kill me with it. If he had been giving non-lethal doses of it to Gunner, over a long period of time, it could have been affecting him, like his emotions and control. It's just a theory, but it’s a theory I am willing to bet on.
I was sitting silently with Cleo on a log by the fire pit in the middle of the village. If circumstances were different, this would have been a really nice and relaxing setting. But there’s a war coming, the atmosphere is a little tense. Cleo has been sticking close to my side a lot lately, it escalated tenfold after Artemis’s attempt on my life. I think she is blaming herself for not stopping him. She was there, not thirty meters from us, but she couldn’t stop him and didn’t catch him. For a Were like Cleo, I can imagine that would be playing on her mind a lot. I was ready to tell her to let it go, that it was my fault for not seeing him better. I had my doubts about him, but I did nothing to act on them. I was going to tell Cleo not to beat herself up about it, but before I did, she stood up and stretched her arms over her head.
“Come” she said firmly,
“Come where?” I asked as I stood up also,
“Alpha is here” she replied. Hina. The Luna Eclipse warriors made better time than I expected. I followed Cleo to the driveway where Elaine and the others were already waiting. Cole, Lupus and Roe came out to greet them also. We all stood in the driveway quietly waiting. The sounds of a vehicle in the distance filtered through the trees, and a few moments later two large Humvee's and two smaller sedans pulled into the driveway. I spotted Alpha Hina immediately. Her intimidating and yet beautiful figure sat in the front passenger seat of the first sedan. The warriors began to pile out of the Humvee’s and stretched their arms and legs. Elaine went to Hina’s door and opened it for her. Hina stepped out and embraced Elaine, they pulled back and stood with their foreheads pressed together. After they broke apart, Alpha Hina walked around the car towards the rest of us with Elaine close behind. Her eyes scanned over Cole, Roe and Lupus before they settled on me. Her lip twitched as a small flash of a smile broke through her hard façade, she quickly covered it again and walked over to stand in front of me. She grabbed my face with both hands and pulled me to her, pressing her lips firmly against my own. Surprised by her show of affection, I stood there unmoving as her lips connected with mine. She pulled back and moved her hands down to my shoulders.
“Hello Lunaya” she half smiled,
“Alpha Hina, thank you for coming” I said back to her with a smile and a nod,
“Where is your beautiful Mate?” she asked as she looked around at the gathered group, all of which were watching our interaction with interest.
“She’s...” I began,
“I’m here” Alyse called from behind me. She walked over and wrapped her arms around Hina’s neck and kissed her cheek. My jealousy flared and I could feel a growl bubble in my chest. The fact that she has been avoiding me made it all that much worse. I swallowed my growl and tried hard to keep my facial expression blank.
“It is so nice to see you both again, regardless of the circumstances. Elaine tells me the girl doesn’t know who you are” Hina said as she turned to face me again. Wow, right to it huh? I glared at Elaine before looking back at Hina.
“No” I grunted,
“Why didn’t you tell her?” she asked me firmly, if I didn’t know better, I would say she sounds disappointed.
“There were other factors at play”
“Ahh, yes, Elaine told me about that too. Visiting with the Moon Goddess. Your child must be very important”. The way she said it didn’t sit right. Like she was overly excited or interested in this piece of information. Is that why she came? Because she believes Zelena is more than just the Triple Goddess? Does she think that there is more going on here?
“Is that why you came?” I asked her with a tilt of my head. Her jaw twitched and her face hardened,
“I came to help rescue the Goddess, your child” she answered with an irritated tone,
“That’s not completely true though, is it? You would have left New Zealand before she was taken, for you to get here so quickly. You left days ago, right?” I asked her sceptically,
“Are we no longer trusting each other Lunaya?” Hina asked in a hard voice, a voice that said she will cut me if I press her.
“That all depends” I answered,
“On what?”
“On your intentions”
“What do you think my intentions are, Lunaya?”
“I’m still trying to figure that out” I said, my eyes roamed her face for answers. I could feel other bodies closing in on us, watching and listening. But I paid them no mind.
“For you to be here now, you would have left the pack before, or, on the night of the dinner… the night we found out Selene had been visiting her” I mumbled as the pieces clicked into place in my head. She wasn’t just here to help rescue Zelena, she was here to recruit her.
“You want to take her back to Luna Eclipse, don’t you?” I asked her with wide eyes. Threatening growls began to rumble around us. I finally looked up and noticed that many of the Tri-Moon pack had come out to meet the elusive Luna Eclipse she-wolves. And after hearing me verbalise my assumption on the intensions of Alpha Hina, they took it as a threat against their Luna. The Luna Eclipse warriors surrounded their Alpha and growled back, readying themselves into attacking stances. Fuck, what have I done?
