Twin Moon - Chapter 231 - The Truth

Zelena.

When we got back to the village, it was bustling with activity. Tobias and I strode through the clearing side by side. I nodded my ‘hello’ to each pack member that greeted me. Many of them wished me well and told me how excited they were to meet the new baby. We have yet to share that there are twins. I'm hoping Gunner will be back soon, so that I can share the news with him before I do so with the pack. Which reminded me.
***The other day, in the delivery room, you said that Gunner will be home soon***
***I did***
***Did you mean it?***
***Of course***
***Do you like know, know. Or are you just guessing?***
Tobias snapped his large head to the side, and I watched as his body swiftly morphed back into his human form, allowing him to stand up on two feet.
“I know he will come back to you. He is your True Mate, and the father of your pups. No sane Were would ever leave you all behind on purpose” Tobias said as he pulled on his jeans. I concentrated on my human form and felt the pinch of the change. I slowly stood up on my own human feet and took the pyjama bottoms that Tobias was holding out for me. Great, I'll be wearing my pj’s in the middle of the village. Didn't consider that when we left before dawn. I slipped my pants on and then the top, and walked quickly for the main house.
As soon as I entered the smell of food hit me like a ton of bricks, and my stomach grumbled with enthusiasm. Tobias laughed beside me with a slight shake of his head.
“Anyone would think that you’re still pregnant.” he scoffed and headed into the kitchen, with me close on his heels. Roe was busy behind the counter with another she-wolf. I recognise her, Amy, she works in the kitchen during special occasions and guest visits. Really any time that cooking requires extra hands. Not sure what special occasion calls for help this morning though.
“Smells good Roe” I cooed with my nose in the air.
“Thank you darling, grab yourself a plate and dig in” she said with a wave.
“Good morning, Amy” I said with a smile. She seemed surprised that I remembered her name, and answered me with a quick low bow.
“Hello Luna” she said from her bowed position.
“What’s going on, why the big cook up?” I asked and took a plate and handed it to Tobias, then took one for myself. I began filling my plate with the delicious smelling bacon, pancakes, scrambled eggs, and fresh cut fruit. If there is one thing I love about my wolf being born, it’s that I can now eat like a sumo wrestler. Growing up, eating was never something I looked forward to or held much regard for. Maybe because I didn’t remember ever eating a decent meal, not until Selene gave me back my memories. But now, I love eating, especially Roe’s cooking.
“I was awake at the ass crack of dawn and couldn’t get back to sleep, so I thought why not cook the pack a nice breakfast” Roe mumbled as she continued mixing the pancake batter. I was filled with guilt and regret at her words. I didn’t mean to wake anyone up this morning. And the last thing I would want is to upset Roe.
“Oh, I'm sorry. I didn’t mean to wake you” I said remorsefully. Roe’s head snapped up and her gaze softened as she looked at me.
“Oh darling, I’m not upset at you. If anything, I'm annoyed with that woman” she huffed and threw her head towards the kitchen door. I didn’t need to ask, I knew she was talking about Lunaya. Roe has been huffing and grunting about Lunaya since she ran out of the delivery room. The fact that she didn’t come back until this morning has probably made her even angrier.
“Well, I'm sorry regardless” I said with a small smile. I looked around the kitchen and the breakfast nook, where Tobias was sitting with his overflowing plate of food, but I didn’t see the twins.
“Where are the twins?” I asked nervously, my voice going a little high.
“They should be in the nursery, Smith is with them” she answered over her shoulder as she flipped another pancake.
“Thank you” I called and headed out of the kitchen. I was about to head up the stairs but was stopped before I climbed the first step.
“Zelena” Lunaya called from the library door. I groaned and turned to look at her.
“Can we talk please?” she asked as she fiddled with her fingers.
“Can it wait, I want to check on the twins” I snipped and put my foot on the first step.
“It can’t wait any longer” she said quickly. I froze and looked at her over my shoulder with my brow raised,
“I understand that you’re angry with me, and you should be. My behaviour was atrocious. But this has waited long enough and I'm afraid it’s become rather urgent” she insisted. The tone in her voice gave me a chill. She sounded scared and anxious. So, I stepped down from the step and followed her into the library. I sat down on an armchair and lifted my plate to sit under my chin.
“Do you want to call for Tobias or Roe, or anyone?” she asked hesitantly as she sat on the couch opposite me. I shook my head and shoved a spoonful of eggs in my mouth.
“Okay” she breathed heavily and leaned back in the chair, crossing her hands on her lap.
“Where do I start?” she chuckled awkwardly and rubbed her sweaty palms over her legs.
“I’ve said a few times that there are things about your past, your family, that I’ve been wanting to talk to you about” she started. I nodded in recognition. There have been a few times she has said we needed to talk, I never knew what about though, but she did always sound urgent when she mentioned it.
“Well, I think the best place to start is when I was pregnant, and the was told of the prophecy for the first time”.
I groaned loudly and placed my half eaten plate of food on the coffee table.
“Yes, I’ve already heard about the prophecy. Galterio told me all about it when he tried to replace Gunner as my Mate” I grunted and folded my arms over my chest.
“Galterio was an overconfident ass, who believed in the wrong person” Lunaya growled ferociously. Her quick turn to anger had me surprised.
“Let me guess, he told you the prophecy was about you having two Mates?” she hissed with annoyance.
“Yes” I answered her cautiously. This sudden change in temperament had me a little worried. “Artemis was a fool, he knew nothing of the true prophecy. He spouted bullshit and lies, disguising them as the word of the Goddess. Only a self-important, power hungry, dick like Galterio would believe he had a chance to Mate with a Triple Goddess” Lunaya snapped. My eyes went wide as I gazed shocked at her angry and reddening face. This was personal for her. Like, really personal. My interest piqued and I sat up a little straighter.
“Okay, I hear you. If not two Mates, what was the prophecy about?” I asked her sincerely. Lunaya took a deep breath and interlocked her fingers on her lap. She looked up at me to meet my gaze and then spoke so softly I could only just hear her.
“Spawned by the one who gave us breath. Vanished from life but spared from death. The Ethereal one gives she who is promised. To wield the power of the Triple Goddess. Where the moon is three, two will come. Once the seal is made, destiny is done. With one comes death, pain and destruction. The other comes life, love and devotion. Peril will end and the wolf will thrive. But for peace to reign, only one can survive”.
Galterio didn’t recite the actual prophecy, he only told me the meaning. Or what he thought was the meaning. I can understand how he may have thought it was about Mates. But hearing it for myself is different. It's not about Mates. Not even close. My stomach dropped and I had a dark feeling in the pit of my stomach. I know what it’s about. But I need to hear her say it.
“Tell me” I squeaked. My voice shook with uncertain terror.
“It’s about twins” Lunaya said, confirming my fear.
