Mother of the Moon - Chapter 121 - Ingonish
Lunaya.
Turns out we didn’t venture too far from the lodge. It only took us ten minutes to get back. Beta Bronson volunteered to go back along the path to find my clothes and return them to our room, while we met with Astéri and Elaine. We quickly slipped back to our room and got changed, then went in search of the two she-wolves. We found them in a large living space, and that is an understatement. The room is massive. It boasted a high ceiling with exposed wooden beams and chandeliers. Two large stone fireplaces giving the space a warmth and cosiness. Beautiful rugs littered the floor with a multitude of armchairs and sofas spread around the room. Elaine and Astéri were seated on a large leather couch that curved around a beautiful antique looking coffee table.
“Did you enjoy your swim?” Astéri asked, a sly smirk playing on her face.
“We did, thank you. How did you know we went swimming?” I asked her as we sat on the other side of the large couch.
“I know everything that happens on my pack land love” she answered quizzically. I shouldn’t have expected any different. We are still just guests here, it makes sense that she would have had someone following us. I guess that’s why the Beta knew to bring towels. But still I don’t like the thought of being stalked and surveyed.
“Astéri and I were speaking about our travel plans” Elaine spoke, clearly in an effort to stop me from protesting about her watchful eye.
“Oh, and what have you come up with?” I asked, taking the bait.
“We didn’t get too far into it, we were waiting for you to return” Astéri cut in.
“We’re here now, so let’s get to it” I said leaning back into the leather.
“The Triple Goddess is on Cape Breton Island. She and her Mate took the positions of Alpha and Luna before the hunters attacked” Astéri began,
“She has a Mate?” I flew forward on the couch, my voice becoming a little too loud and a little too high pitched. She can’t have a Mate yet, she is still just a baby. The thought that a Mate was in the picture didn’t cross my mind. Not once. I had assumed that she became Luna after her Goddess status had been realised. It was naive of me to believe a pack would make a lone she-wolf their leader. But mated? No.
“She does, he is or was the Alpha-son"
“And you said an attack, we knew they were attacked but we don’t know the details. Is she okay? How bad was it?” I demanded.
“I am happy to share these details with you all, but I ask that you stop interrupting me” Astéri said with a low growl. Alyse gripped my forearm and pulled me back on the couch. I gave Astéri a curt nod and she continued.
“The hunters were searching, that part is obvious. They slaughtered packs from Vermont to Prince Edward Island, and everywhere in between. They knew who or what they were looking for, they just didn’t know the where part. Thank the Goddess they didn’t move to the South, to us, and instead started in the North. That's where they found her. But she wasn’t alone. Not by a long shot. She had amassed an army of her own and they overpowered the hunter's clan. I don’t know all the details myself, only the small parts that have followed the chain of whispers. But apparently, she took on up to fifty hunters all by herself. Some of the hunter's bodies were so mangled and broken that they didn’t even look like humans anymore”.
Astéri paused gazing out the windows to the forest.
“And then what?” I pressed.
“Well, there is no more. No one has seen or heard any more from the Goddess since the attack. Some speculate that she died, others say she has retreated to the sky after fulfilling her purpose to defeat the hunters”
“That’s ridiculous, there are more than just one clan of hunters. There must be hundreds of them across the world” Alyse spat.
“I agree, that theory is crap. But people believe what they want to believe”
“And what do you believe Astéri? If you really think that she is dead, why are we here?” I asked, my anger and frustration pushing to the surface.
“I never said she is dead. I said that some speculate that she may be” Astéri grinned at me and crossed her legs.
“But you know differently?” I spoke. I could see it on her face. She knows more, she is just trying to lead us on an emotional journey. She’s enjoying the story telling.
“I do” she answered smugly.
“Care to share it?” Elaine asked, finally speaking up.
“What did my son say, when you asked where his father was?” she asked me, leaning forward and resting her elbows on her crossed legs.
“He said he had to go away on pack business, that was all” I answered, holding back on my annoyance.
“Mhm” She hummed,
“Ambrose is acting as pack diplomat the next few days. We were invited to a birthday party”
“Oh my Goddess” Alyse whispered harshly.
“Enough games Astéri” I growled,
“Either tell us or don’t but stop with the suspenseful story telling already”.
“Watch yourself Omega. This is still my pack, and you are still a guest here” she roared as she stood up and glared down at me. Omega. She called me Omega. So, somehow she knows that we, or at least I, am not a part of Luna Eclipse. She is smart and intuitive, she has proven that much, but this is a dangerous revelation she has stumbled upon.
“I apologies” I said eyeing her stubbornly. Alyse’s grip on my arm tightened and Elaine shifted in her seat. I won’t confirm nor deny her assumptions that I am an Omega, I will just let it go as if I never heard it. If I pay it too much attention, she could become more curious or worse, defensive. Astéri sat back down and crossed her legs again.
“Lua Chei was invited to a birthday party, but not just any birthday party. It’s an ascension ceremony”.
“Since when do other packs get invited to those?” I snapped. Astéri lifter her brown and eyed me intently. As if to say ‘last warning’.
“They do when it’s for the Triple Goddess and her Mate” she said firmly, a smirk twitching at her lip. So, she is alive. And she’s throwing a party. What better time for us to go, we can act as diplomats and meet her that way. If they let us in. If they have invited packs from all over, how would they even know if a few extra guests showed up. Who am I kidding, she’s the Triple Goddess and they will have high ranking members from multiple packs. Security will be tighter than a nun’s asshole.
“When’s the party?” Elaine asked.
“Tomorrow night” she answered without hesitation.
“Then we’ll go to the party” I announced standing up from the couch.
“You won't be able to cross the pack border. Not if they aren’t already expecting you”
“We can just say we are diplomats from Luna Eclipse, because that’s what we are” I huffed in annoyance.
“Listen love, I'm a very open-minded woman. I'd like to think anything is possible, but that doesn’t mean that everyone else does too. Just because I believe that’s where some of you are from, doesn't mean that they will too. They will kill you before you get the chance to prove it” she made a show of eyeing me as she said ‘some of you’. I hint of nerves and frustration filtered through my blood.
“How do you know that for sure” Alyse asked.
“I don’t know it for sure, but I do know that everything changed after the hunters. All the packs in this region, even the ones further out, they have all upped their security measures. Just as we have. I'm sorry but you can’t just show up there”.
“Then what do you suppose we do?” Elaine asked, coming to stand at my side. Her show of comradery really boosted my mood and feelings towards her.
“I suggest you take Analah and use her to contact her father. He will vouch for you and then they will be a little more accommodating” Astéri announced, looking up at us. I looked at Elaine, I could see her mind working. She has already agreed to take Analah back to Luna Eclipse, so it makes sense that she comes with us now. Even if Elaine and the others stay in Nova Scotia longer than anticipated, Analah could always just come back home again and then they could pick her up on their way. I like the idea, but I don’t have the final say.
“Okay” Elaine said firmly.
“Excellent” Astéri clapped her hands and stood up,
“Ingonish is an eight-hour drive, so you will need to leave first thing”
“Ingonish?” Alyse asked as she stepped up to my other side.
“Yes, that is where the Tri-Moon pack is located”.
