Mother of the Moon - Chapter 148 - Intruders
Lunaya.
“I think you’re being irrational” Alyse snapped at me. We had been going around in circles having the same argument all morning.
“I’m not being irrational, I'm trying to do the right thing” I groaned once again.
“How is that the right thing?” Alyse yelled. She was pacing back and forth in front of me as I sat on a fallen tree. After our talk with Gunner last night and the revelation about Zelena and her relationship with Selene, I agreed to keep my distance. Alyse however thinks I'm being stupid and that I'm just scared of her rejecting me in favour of Selene. I mean, she’s not wrong, but she isn’t totally right either. Gunner told me very little about her upbringing at the hands of that filthy hunter. I don’t know the details, but enough to know that her childhood was hell. She deserves this time, to bask in the newfound joyous relationship. Even if I am jealous, even if I wish it was me that was making her this happy. She deserves the time to enjoy these memories before I drop another bomb in her life.
“Alyse, this isn’t easy for me. I know that you know this. I’m not going anywhere, I’m never leaving her again. If I stay in her life as nothing more than a friend or a pack mate, then that will have to be enough. If the time comes that she is ready to know the truth, then and only then will I tell her” I told her once again.
“This isn’t right” Alyse whispered while looking down at her feet.
“My love, please, I just need your support. I appreciate your thoughts and feelings, but this is how it has to be. At least for now” I said reaching out for her. She stepped between my legs and placed her hands on my shoulders. I snaked my arms around her waist and rested my forehead on her stomach.
“I support you” Alyse said softly,
“Thank you” I whispered. We stayed like that for a while. Enjoying the moment together. At least Gunner decided to let us out of the tent. It shows that he has some kind of trust for us. The Tri-Moon pack has some beautiful landscape. The forest is thick and lush and all different shades of green. The air holds so many different scents. Damp earth, tree bark, forest animals and the distant scent of the sea water. There could be worse places to call home.
“Can you smell that?” Alyse asked. I lifted my head from her stomach and looked up to her face. She had her nose scrunched up and her eyes were scanning the trees. I lifted my nose and sniffed. I caught the scent and shot to my feet. I sniffed again and turned on my heels, tracking the direction of the scent.
“What is it?” Alyse asked with concern,
“A Feral” I snarled back,
“Another one?” she questioned,
“No. The same one”
“But we’re on pack lands”
“Then it is either really stupid or it’s up to something”. I scoured the forest for signs of the Feral, but I couldn’t see it. The scent is strong, so it has to be close. I lifted my nose and kept my eyes focused. I could feel my claws pushing at the tips of my fingers. The potential threat was calling forth my wolf. The breezed picked up and I caught the full force of the Ferals scent. A growl rumbled through my chest as I pushed myself forward.
“East” I growled as I took off. I changed into my wolf mid stride and charged through the trees. Alyse was at my side, keeping up with ease. Some back up would have been good right now. Having a pack to flash with is essential when calling for back up though. We ran through the forest towards the scent. It was moving, and moving fast.
***There’s only one***
I flashed Alyse. She may not have a wolf, but her human is just as fast and strong as I am in my wolf form. As we pushed on, the scent got stronger and I could see the tracks the Feral was leaving behind.
***It’s up ahead, I can see it***
I looked to where Alyse was looking, and I saw a small flash of dirt brown fur dash behind a tree.
***Take the left and we’ll close in together***
***We’re nearing the edge of the territory***
I pushed forward and veered right as Alyse did the same to the left. This Feral is weak, it is fast but not fast enough. I dug in my paws and lurched forward, pushing my legs as much as I could. I was closing in on the tail of the feral, I looked to the left and Alyse was gliding through the forest parallel to me.
***Push in, now, before it gets to the border.***
Alyse and I closed the distance until we were running at its side. The Feral panicked and lunged at Alyse. I pushed off hard and flew myself through the air, landing on its back. I hit it hard enough that it missed Alyse. We rolled along the ground as I dug in my claws, I tried to get a grip on its neck with my teeth but couldn’t get the right angle. We hit hard against a wide tree trunk, dislodging my hold on the Ferals back. We bounced apart and I jumped back up to my feet. I growled and barked, snapping my jaws threateningly at the small wolf. The Feral stood, holding its front left paw off the ground. It snarled and growled with its teeth bared. I flashed my sharp canines and stalked towards it. Alyse appeared at my side, her claws ready and growling ferociously. Her growl rumbled through the forest, echoing loudly through the trees. The Feral eyed her and barked out a snarl. It has chosen her as the weaker link, as its first point of attack and it lunger for her.
I jumped forward, placing my body in front of Alyse’s. The Feral hit against my side, its teeth sinking into the thick fur at the top of my shoulder. I howled and tried to thrash it off. Alyse grabbed the Feral by the scruff of the neck and pulled it back. It ripped its teeth from my neck, taking with it a chunk of flesh. Alyse then swung the Feral around, flinging it into a tree. The tree crunched under the impact of the Ferals body, but still stood. The Feral howled and whimpered but got back up. I could feel my blood soaking through my coat from the wound to my shoulder, but I still got to my feet and growled at the filthy wolf. It was hurt, and I could see in its petrified gaze that it knew it was caught. It came down to fight or flight, and seeing as it couldn’t fly, fight was the only thing left to do. Alyse and I bared down on the small Feral readying for the attack.
Just as we were about to lunge, a large tan wolf came from nowhere and landed on top of the Feral. It pinned the wolf to the ground with its teeth wrapped around its neck. More wolves appeared and surrounded the Feral and their leader. They must be warriors from Tri-Moon, maybe the border patrol. They must have heard the commotion. I tried to walk forward but stumbled, I had lost more blood than I realised.
“Nae” Alyse called as she rushed to my side. Her fingers brushed through my fur as she inspected the wound on my shoulder. It must be worse than I originally thought, I can feel myself getting weaker.
***We need to question it, find out why it’s here***
I told Alyse. She nodded at me and stood to walk over to the wolves that were holding down the Feral. Upon her approach, they closed their circle around it, restricting Alyse from getting close.
“It needs to be questioned. A Feral has been spotted hanging around the pack lands, we need to know if this is that Feral” Alyse spoke with authority. The wolves snarled at her as she spoke, but none changed back in order to speak with her.
“Do you have a cell? It needs to be locked up until it can be questioned by the Alpha” she asked them. But still no one changed in order to answer. Something doesn’t feel right about this. I lifted my nose slightly and breathed in the scent. They aren’t Ferals, that much was obvious. But their scents aren’t familiar either.
***Alyse, something is wrong***
***What do you mean?***
***I don’t think they are from Tri-Moon***
***Huh?***
Alyse and I looked at each of the wolves, five of them, all stood around the Feral, blocking our view of it. Alyse stepped back to my side, keeping her eyes on the pack of Weres with the Feral. My head began to feel airy and my legs started to shake. The blood loss was affecting me at the worse time. I can’t change back, not yet, I need to stay in my wolf form for protection. I don’t like these Weres, I don’t trust them.
“The cell? You will take it there? I need to get her back to the pack house” Alyse said, maintaining her firm tone. Once again, none of them changed form. One of the wolves nodded its head slowly and that was the only sign of recognition that we got. I took the chance and struggled to my feet.
***We have to get out of here***
Alyse rested her hand on my neck and together we backed away. I walked forward with my ears focused behind us, listening for any signs of their pursuit. I heard rustling and quick movement but it wasn’t coming our way.
***They’re taking it away***
***Which way?***
***Towards the boarder***
***I don’t think they were Tri-Moon warriors***
***I think you’re right***
***We need to alert the Alpha***
***Why would they take a Feral and not just kill it?***
***I don’t know, but we need to find out. Run ahead and find the Beta***
***I’m not leaving you like this, you’re hurt Nae***
***I’ll be fine, I’m already healing. But we can’t take the risk of letting them get too far away***
***It’s not happening***
***Alyse, we don’t have the time, go***
***I said no!***
I growled lowly. She is always so damn stubborn. I stopped walking and shook out my fur, trying to get a feel of my body. My shoulder is in a bad way, the loss of blood has made me very weak. But I can run, not for long, but long enough to get back to the village.
***Fine. Let’s go.***
