Twin Moon - Chapter 251 - Micha
Zelena.
Micha was too weak, he could barely stand up.
“The aconite, baby, I can’t do it” he puffed exhaustedly,
“Please Daddy, get me out” Aurora cried and pulled at her arm some more. Micha bent down and placed one of his hands on her face, with his other hand he supported his weight on the arm of the chair.
“I’m not going anywhere baby, I'm right here” he said softly. He sounded exhausted, he looked terrible, I don’t know how they are going to do this. I spun around to stare at Selene, she looked back at me with a blank expression, only her brilliant white eyes looked sad. I realized I didn’t need to ask what I wanted to ask, the answer was on her face already. They’re not getting out.
“I need you to help me sweetheart, can you do that?” Micha asked Aurora. She paused for a moment before nodding her response.
“We will pull together okay, you need to pull as hard as you can. Can you do that for me Angel?” he said while looking at her young face. Stupidly, in that moment, I felt envious of my sister. She got to meet our father, to know him. He calls her Angel. She got a real father, and I got Hank.
“Three, two, one” Micha counted down, and together they pulled at the steel bar that was holding down Aurora’s wrist. The metal creaked and groaned, but didn’t break. He was struggling, that much was clear, but he didn’t give up. While they were both still pulling at the bar, the door that Aurora came through burst open. A stream of hunters poured in, all of them wearing heavy armor, and each holding a gun pointed directly at Micha and Aurora. The twelve men formed a semi circle around the chair, blocking the door and the cage gate.
“Na zemle” (On the ground) one of the hunters screamed,
“Get down” another shouted in English. Micha turned to face the men, flashing his teeth and growling ferociously. There is no way he could take them all, not in his current state. Given the stories that Lunaya has told me, I have no doubt that back in his day, before we were born, it would have been a cake-walk for him. But not now, not like this. I could see him trying to focus, to bring forth the change, but the spurts of fur over his body disappeared just as fast as they grew. He was too weak to change form.
I watched helplessly as the men all pounced on him at the same time. I cried out for them to let him go, but of course, they couldn’t hear me. Selene stepped up behind me and placed her hand on my shoulder. After a minute the men began to stand, dragging a blood covered Micha to his feet as well. Four of the men held him steady, one with a large knife at his throat, while all the others stood with their guns aimed and ready to fire. All the while, Aurora continued to beg for the men to stop. A man in military uniform walked into the room, more so sauntered. He stood with his shoulders back and head high. His uniform was pristine and covered in stripes and medals made of gold.
“You have made a fatal mistake, beast” the heavily accented man spoke. It was the same voice from the speaker box. This is the man in charge. Micha didn’t respond, just growled. Another man marched in through the door, wearing black combat pants and a long sleeve shirt, with a black vest on over the top. My stomach dropped and my mouth lost all moisture. I know him. He once called himself my Uncle Trevor. Though he was younger and had a few less wrinkles. He still wore the same devilish smirk.
“I ought to remove her fingers” the uniformed man said threateningly. Micha growled and fought against the firm hold on him.
“You won’t touch her” he snarled back angrily.
“You are right” the man said smugly, then stepped to the side.
“I won’t” he said vaguely. Trevor walked forward and stood in front of my father. My heart was racing as my panic exploded. My whole body was shaking in anticipation. I was on the cusp of full blown screaming for them to get away. The tears in my eyes rolled down my cheeks at their own will.
“You on the other hand” Trevor said with a shit eating tone,
“Serve no further purpose” he chortled. Trevor grabbed my father by his hair, and pulled him to the front of the chair, where Aurora was shaking and quivering with fear. Trevor held Micha by the scruff of his hair, holding his face in front of Aurora.
“Let this serve as a warning to you, mutt” Trevor sneered at my sister,
“You will never leave this place. You belong to us. If you are disobedient, you will be punished. If you misbehave, you will be punished. If you ever try anything like this again, you will be punished” Trevor yelled down at the small Aurora.
“Do I make myself clear?” he snapped. Aurora jumped and nodded her head quickly,
“I don’t think she understands” Trevor chuckled over his shoulder, to the men behind him. A small smattering of chuckles sounded from the men in response.
“Perhaps this will teach you” he snorted. Trevor lifted his hand to my father’s neck, and with zero hesitation, sliced a knife through his throat. My father’s blood spurted out of the gaping wound, covering Aurora from head to toe. I screamed a sound that I didn’t know I was capable of. My chest throbbed with a stabbing pain. Selene’s arms wrapped around me, as I dropped to the ground onto my knees. Why would she make me watch this, what could I possibly learn from watching my father die. Selene’s hand brushed through my long hair as I sobbed uncontrollably. She whispered gentle shooshing sounds as she held onto me.
Aurora did nothing. She sat quietly in the chair, her eyes glued to our father as the life left his face. She did not cry, she did not scream or beg. She simply did nothing. After a minute, Trevor let Micha’s body drop to the ground and lay in the pool of blood covering the floor. Trevor stepped forward and put both hands on the arms of the chair. He leaned forward, forcing Aurora to lean back. Then silence, all he did was stare at her. All that could be heard was my own weeping and harsh breathing.
“No tears for your dear father?” he finally asked in a teasing manner. She didn’t answer and she didn’t look away. She glared right back at him, unmoving and not backing down. For a child, her resolve was impressive. After another minute Trevor pushed off from the chair and stood upright.
“She will be a good little bitch. Give her a few days in the cell to make sure” he said as he turned around to face the uniformed man. He nodded with an evil smile.
“Idti” (Go) he shouted to the other men. In a matter of seconds, Aurora was freed from the chair and marched back to the dark room. Selene had to convince me to follow her. I couldn’t leave my father. I couldn’t look away from his lifeless golden eyes. I wanted so badly for him to still be alive. I hoped with everything I had that he had gotten free. Those hapless dreams were pointless. The only sweet thing I could focus on, was that Trevor got his just desserts. Gunner killed that monster. Though I now wish I had been able to do it myself.
Once back in the dark room, Aurora sat silently on the dirty mattress. She still didn’t sob or cry, or shed a single tear. She was like a statue, completely unmoving besides the rise and fall of her chest.
“What’s going on?” I asked Selene meekly,
“Listen” she whispered and moved to kneel down in front of Aurora.
“Daughter of mine” her voice rang like an echo through the room,
“Go away” Aurora hissed back. Holy shit, she can hear her.
“My child, I am so very sorry” Selene cooed gently,
“Get out!” Aurora snapped harshly. She looked up and glared at Selene. She had so much hatred in her childish eyes. With her face still covered in our father's blood, her hateful eyes narrowed to slits, and her small teeth showing through her thin lips, she looked like pure evil.
“Please talk to me, little light”
“I don’t want to talk to you, I don’t want to see you, I want nothing to do with you” Aurora snarled angrily. When Selene didn’t answer, she continued,
“He died because of you. They wanted us because of you. You’re all they ever talk about. You said you wouldn’t save me, so why won't you just leave me alone!” she screamed at the top of her lungs.
“Daughter, I explained that to you” Selene answered softly.
“Don’t call me that! You are not my mother, I have no mother! I hate you! You hear me, I hate you!”.
Aurora was panting, her body was shaking, and her eyes were wide and full of anger and hatred. As she was screaming, the room felt like it got colder. An uncomfortable shiver ran up my spine. There was no light in here, but the room felt darker all of a sudden too. Filled with foreboding shadows. Selene sat back on her legs and placed her hands on her lap. They both looked at each other, neither one speaking. I didn’t know what to do. I understand this is a memory and I'm watching something that has already happened, but I still feel helpless.
