Twin Moon - Chapter 294 - His Glow

Zelena.

I flew off to the side with so much speed. The force at which I hit Gunner’s shield made my brain wobble inside my skull. My hold dropped and Whiskey landed back on the ground on her feet. Keeping the shield in place, Gunner growled and stepped toward Whiskey with his claws ready. I quickly stood up and raced to stop him, but I was sent flying back into the shield once again. When I went to get back up again, a sharp pain shot through my chest, and I yelped out in pain. I looked down to the source of the irritation and froze. Shit. A long black jagged piece of ice was protruding from my chest. It’s the darkness. I produced the same type of weapon once. The sting of ice in my veins intensified and the cold emptiness of the darkness filled my chest. I snapped my head to Whiskey who was about to launch another in my direction. Before the fresh shard of black ice left her hand, Gunner swung his arm out in her direction. The shield around us dropped and Gunner retrained all of his attention on Whiskey. As the shield fell away from behind me, I laid back onto the dirt.
Each breath was like a punch to the gut. I could hear the air wheezing in my lungs. My skin grew cold and I could feel the darkness taking over my body once more. I can’t let her win. I can’t give myself over to it, not again. I breathed in a deep lungful of air, as deep as the pain would allow. I held my breath and gritted my teeth to ready myself for the pain that was coming. I wrapped my fingers around the jagged piece of darkness lodged in my chest and yanked it out. An anguished scream cried out of me before I bit my lip to cut off the last of it. I pressed my hands down over the wound and forced myself to sit back up again. I lifted my hand to look at the damage done. Blood was covering my hands and quickly drenched my shirt. Fuck me. This isn’t good.
The skin around the open wound was crawling with whisps of black smoke. The blood seeping from the wound looked more black than it did red. It was still infecting me, the ice shard, or the darkness. Whatever it is, I can basically feel it oozing into my body and soul. I tried to stand again and grunted with the excruciating pain.
“Little one” a voice called from the other side of one of the cabins. I whipped my head in the direction the voice came from and squinted. The morning sun was starting to brighten up the sky, which helped me spot a pair of legs laying on the ground around the corner. It was the gigantic pair of bare feet that made it click. Tobias. What is he still doing over there? Roe said he was hurt, why wasn’t he taken to get help. I checked Gunner who was dealing magical blow for blow with Whiskey. He appeared to be handling himself fine, for the moment at least. I tried to get up, but the strain only made me cough up blood. Fucking shit! I looked over to where Tobias’ legs were poking out from the side of the cabin, and then over to where Gunner just blocked an ice shard flying for his face. To hell with it. I wiped the blood from my chin, then scrambled across the dirt on my hands and knees. The short distance felt like climbing a mountain. My chest felt like it was tearing apart. The icy feeling of the darkness was like cold needles jabbing into my skin, intensifying the pain tenfold. I wheezed and coughed out more blood as I dropped onto my side at Tobias’ feet.
“Fuck” I hissed and put pressure back on my seeping wound. I swallowed the agonized sob in my throat. It went down like a lump of hot coal. I winced and glared up at Tobias, ready to tear him a new one. But as our eyes met, my heart split in two.
“Tobias?” I cried and dragged myself up his body to his side. He was sitting up against the side of the cabin. His usually dark skin was terribly grey and dripping with sweat. There was a hole in his chest, long and very deep, that sat just to the left of his heart. Although blood was covering his chest, arms, and hands, the wound itself was no longer bleeding. The stench of death was all over him. His arm came around my side to my hip and he basically pulled me half on top of him.
“What happened, why is no one helping you?” I cried and went to touch his chest but quickly pulled my hands back before I did. Tobis slipped one of his hands under my shirt and let it rest on the skin of my lower back. His other hand he lifted and placed it over the gaping hole in my chest. The moment his skin touched mine I could feel the singe of his energy flowing around me.
“Aurora” Tobias croaked out.
“I thought I could talk her down, I was wrong” he chuffed out a forced laugh, which only made him cough.
“You need help, we need to get the doctor” I cried. I didn’t know where to put my hands so I just kind of waved them around in front of me in panic. Tobias took my hand and held it at the centre of his chest. I half choked, half sobbed. I don’t know how to help him. I don’t know what to do.
“Calm Zelena. Be calm” he shooshed me and squeezed my hand.
“You’re telling me to calm down right now? You have a hole in your chest, I have a hole in my chest. We both have fucking holes in our fucking chests” I screamed out the sentence as I bounced on Tobias’ lap. It was then that I stilled. It didn’t hurt to move anymore. I looked down and my chest and my eyes bulged. The black whisps of smoke were gone, but the hole was also three times smaller. I felt it then. The zing, the gentle sparks where Tobias’ skin was touching mine. He was doing that thing he did when I was pregnant. Feeding me his energy or some shit. I pulled my hands away from him and growled.
“What are you doing?” I yelled and glared at him. Tobias smiled weakly and reached out to take my hand again. I pulled it away from him and went to slide off his lap.
“Stop, don’t do that. You need your energy, you need it to heal yourself” I scolded him. Tobias chuckled and grabbed both my hands, pulling them to rest in the middle of his chest.
“There’s no healing this one” he said softly. Fresh tears fell as I glared down at him. I shook my head wildly and looked around us. I need a cloth or a bandage, something I can use to wrap up his wound. I'm not giving up, he can still heal. Tobias moved one of his giant hands to cup my face and pulled my gaze back to his.
“It’s okay, Little Goddess” he whispered and pulled me closer to him.
“It’s not okay, you’re not okay, Tobias” I sobbed. My body was shaking rapidly, my heart was hammering, my breaths were fast and sharp.
“Breathe, Zelena” Tobias said soothingly. He pulled my head forward and pressed our foreheads together. The energy swirled around us. It tickled my skin, eased my pain and filled me with calmness.
“Stop it Tobias” I sobbed and tried to pull away again. His hand came around the back of my neck and held me in place.
“Everything is going to be okay, Zee”
“It’s not, you’re dying” I heaved. Tobias shook his head slightly and made a tsking sound.
“I’m fulfilling my destiny” he answered and squeezed the back of my neck. I moved my hands to his shoulders to steady myself.
“Let me do this. Let me complete my mission” he pleaded. His voice was becoming softer and weaker. The scent of death was growing stronger. But his energy never stopped flowing between us.
“What are you talking about?” I asked harshly,
“What mission?”
“This is always the way it was going to be”. Tobias grunted and his face scrunched up.
“Please don’t. You have to stay with me. I can’t be without you” I pleaded as fresh sobs wracked my body.
“I will always be with you. You just need to feel for it” Tobias answered in his typical wise old owl ways.
“I need you” I begged and shook at his shoulder.
“You’re my family” I wept through my river of tears.
“I’m here” Tobias strained and moved his hand to the centre of my chest, over the now healed wound. His energy fizzed and a soft blue glow lit up the space around us.
“This has been my greatest honour” his voice muttered weakly.
“Tobias, please” I whimpered and cupped his face. He pulled me forward and whispered stiffly,
“I love you, Little One”. Tobias pressed his lips to my forehead and exhaled a laboured breath. The blue glow evolved into a bright sparkle. Tobias’ hand fell from the back of my neck and his head lolled to the side. I leaned back a look over his sickly face. The blue light was coming from him. It was his energy, his life spark.
The twinkling glow was pouring out of Tobias’ skin and evaporating into mine. When there was nothing left in him, his body just sat there, unmoving and empty. I stared blankly at the shell of my guardian. The tears didn’t stop as I wept silently. A tingle brushed against my cheek, like fingers caressing my skin. I turned to look at who it was, but no one was there. The blue glow was still around me, shining brightly at my back. I felt the prickle of magic across my skin and a burst of energy ignite deep inside my soul. Tobias was still with me, he was showing me the way forward. The light moved and twirled through the air as it reshaped itself. I stood slowly and watched over my shoulder as light spun and transformed into its final shape. I gasped loudly as I gazed at the wonder of it. This was Tobias’ mission. He was to give me one final gift in order to defeat the prophecy. And now, with his glittering light a part of me, with our souls as one, I can do it.
