Mother of the Moon - Chapter 98 - Convincing the Alpha

Zelena.

“Are you sure about this?” I asked Gunner, still not convinced and feeling a little reluctant.
“Yes” he groaned adamantly, for the tenth time.
“The pack deserves to celebrate and so do you” he said more gently as he rubbed his hands up and down my arms.
The thought of throwing a birthday party, crossed with a new Alpha and Luna ceremony, crossed with the ‘arrival of the Goddess’ celebration, or so Roe called it, all seemed a bit tacky. Granted the attack was over three months ago and I’ve been back at home in the pack house for just under two weeks now, try as I may, there was no talking Roe out of this. But I understand, kind of. The pack went through a lot with the hunter attack, and they haven’t had the chance to celebrate their new Alpha, with everyone being in mourning. As I have been told many times now, the blessing of the chosen daughter, or me in other words, is a huge deal to all Weres and they need to celebrate. Plus, Gunner did promise me a birthday party, so who am I to rain on their parade. I don’t know, I just don’t feel good about it though. I feel like we will be dancing on the graves of the lost wolves, on Spartan's grave.
Cole still hasn’t said anything to me. And now because of me, Gunner’s relationship with him has become strained as well. Gunner hates that his best friend, and Beta, is being so dismissive and disrespectful to his Mate, his Luna. I just keep telling him to give it time, I’m still holding out hope that Cole will come around eventually.
“Ugh, fine” I grunted in defeat.
“Excellent” Roe called happily as she burst through the bedroom door.
“You have finally convinced her to get on board then?” she smiled broadly, her eyes switching between the two of us.
“Mum, we talked about this. Boundaries” Gunner whined.
“Oh shush, I’m your mother, I’ve seen all your bits and pieces” she said waving her hand dismissively at Gunner.
I couldn’t help but laugh at the shade of red his face turned, and the look of his eyes nearly bulging out of his head at his mother’s words. Roe took my hands and turned me to face her, smiling at me with a glint of mischief in her eyes.
“Well, now that you’ve stopped fighting it, you and me need to go shopping” she said with slight bounce of her shoulders.
“We do?” I questioned cautiously.
“Absolutely. We need to find the perfect birthday and Luna dress, something fit for a Goddess” she chuckled and winked at the same time.
“Well, who am I to say no to a shopping trip?” I smiled sweetly at her. Roe’s excitement was infectious, and I did really love my last shopping experience. If I’m going to get on board with this big ass party, then I’m going to do it in style.
“Yay” she sung, clapping her hands in front of her while bouncing on her feet. It’s hard to remember sometimes that she is basically my mother-in-law and more than twenty years older than us. Her spirit is so carefree, she makes it feel like she is just one of the girls. It’s all part of why I love her.
“Nat can come too, right?”
“Absolutely. She’s coming, Deena too”.
Gunner groaned and rubbed his hand down his face. A look of exasperation crossed his tired face.
“I’ll get the car then” he grumbled.
“Uh, no you won’t. You’re not coming” Roe snapped at her son.
“Yes I am. I’m not letting you take my Mate out of the village without protection” Gunner snapped back.
I took a small step back and pulled my hands out of Roe’s. The two of them began to argue about my safety and ability to protect myself. I know better than to interrupt this one. As stealthily as I could, I walked slowly towards the open door. Neither of them taking notice to my retreating figure, as they were too engrossed in their bickering. I made it out the door and dashed downstairs to the foyer. I could still hear them going at it from down here and a smile spread across my face. The door to the hall opened and I was surprised to see Cole exiting with Smith behind him. I stood up straight and looked at Cole, silently praying for him to talk to me. I offered a smile as his eyes connected with mine. He immediately looked away and continued walking towards the front door.
“Luna” he mumbled with a small tilt of his head before leaving. That was it, one word and he left again. Dammit Cole, how am I ever going to fix this?
“Hey little Luna” Smith smiled draping his arm over my shoulder.
“Hi smith” I said softly, leaning my head into his chest and still looking at the door Cole just left through.
“He’ll come around, just be patient” Smith said giving my shoulder a gentle shake.
I shook it off, smiled and gave a weak and unconvincing nod of my head. I left Smith in the foyer and walked to the movie room where I knew Nat was still lounging on the couch.
“What’s on?” I asked from the doorway.
“Nothing worth watching” she groaned flipping off the TV.
“Well good, because I would hate to pull you away from something important”.
She sat up straight her eyes bright and a smile spread across her face.
“Why, where are you pulling me to?” she asked excitedly.
She, along with everyone else has been trying to convince me that this party is a good thing. She has thrown every possible reason and excuse imaginable at me. I know she is going to hit the roof when she hears that I have finally caved in.
“Looks like another shopping trip is required” I smiled coyly at her.
“You’re on board?” she squealed jumping to her feet.
“Yes, you’ve roped me in” I chuckled.
She jumped and clapped her hands in front of her, just like her mother did. With a high-pitched squeal she grabbed my arms and did another little jump around.
“This is perfect, we are going to find you the most amazing dress ever. Trust me. I am going to make you look like a drop-dead diva. My poor brother won’t be able to keep his hands off you. None of those poor unsuspecting little boys will be able to hide their boners. AHH this is so exciting!” her voice steadily rose in volume as her rambling sped up. Her fast babbling is one of my favourite things about her. It's always very entertaining to hear where her mouth takes her before her before her brain can catch up.
“Nat, oh my god will you stop?” I yelled at her with a laugh. I grabbed her shoulders and shook.
“Sorry, I’m rambling again aren’t I. I can’t help it though, you know what I’m like. I’m way too excited to control myself. O.M.G. I have to go get dressed, we’ll need to leave like right now if we are going today. Wait, are we going today? What am I saying, of course we are, the party is tomorrow night”.
I pinched the bridge of my nose and shook my head as Nat continued to ramble on. She ended up walking out of the room and up the stairs, still talking, completely oblivious to the fact that I wasn’t following her. I laughed to myself at her neurotic rambling. I have never met anyone like Nat, she is positively one of a kind.
The sound of Gunner and Roe coming down the stairs, still arguing filled the foyer. I stood back leaning on the door frame of the movie room. Neither Roe nor Gunner noticed my presence.
“It’s done Mum, drop it” Gunner yelled.
“This is completely unnecessary. You’re being a helicopter Mate” Roe snapped back.
“I’m being an Alpha, and sending guards is not unnecessary and you know damn well why!” Gunner screamed as he stopped walking and turned to face his mum.
“We can handle ourselves” Roe huffed with a stomp of her foot.
“Well, I’m not risking it. You of all people should understand, her safety is more at risk now than it ever was before”.
Why was my safety at risk? I thought we ended the hunters, what other risks are there?
“Gunner, I understand your concerns, I do. But it will just draw more attention to us” Roe spoke a little softer. I don’t think I have ever heard Roe use his name with adding a ‘baby’ or ‘darling’ or some other pet name to it. She must be either really mad or super serious right now.
“I’m not backing down on this” Gunner said gruffly.
“Compromise with me here, will ya” Roe groaned,
“Just one, a young one that will blend in with us and not look like a bodyguard”.
Gunner huffed and groaned loudly as he dragged his hand down his face.
“Fine, one guard. But you are to stay with him the entire time, what he says goes”.
“Excellent” Roe said cheerfully.
“I’m serious Mum. You make sure she stays by his side the entire time. Straight there and back, no extra stops and no aimless wondering around. Understood?” Gunner's voice was stern and full of authority. It made tingles run through my legs.
“Yes, my love, I understand. We will be good little girls, I promise” Roe giggled and skipped away down the hall. Gunner rubbed the back of his neck and expelled a long sigh.
“I’m going to regret this” he groaned to himself. He may be the Alpha, but he is still putty in his mother’s hand. It’s a little amusing that a man of his power and stature could still be brought down a peg by his tiny little mother.
