Twin Moon - Chapter 282 - The Big Woman

Whiskey.

I waited another minute before jumping down from the branch. I landed with a soft thud and quickly looked around the forest. I could just see the lights from the village through the trees. I'd landed further away than I would have liked, but not too far thankfully. With one last quick look around, I darted off towards the village. I was quick and light on my feet, didn’t make a sound and didn’t stay in one spot long enough to be spotted. This is like second nature to me. Moving without being seen, without being heard. I am still the merchant of death, the ghost in the night, just like I was every time before.
In no time at all, I was in view of the small cabin. The patrolling dogs were still out in the depths of the forest, probably didn’t expect me to get this close to the village again. Their mistake. It’s one of the top rules that was beaten into me, never assume. I approached the cabin from the back, keeping myself in the shadow of the building. I lifted my nose and breathed in as I got closer. The lack of wolf stench is becoming apparent. They aren’t here. I reached the building and pressed myself flat up against the wall. Another quick perimeter check, good, no one has seen me. I pressed my ear to the wall just to double check, there is no noise coming from inside. I peered through the small window, and I was right, it’s empty. Shit.
The barn is further away, and in a slightly more open space. It's doable of course, just riskier. I slinked back into the tree line and snaked my way towards the building. The closer I got to the barn, the more I realised that this is where they have to be. I can smell the filthy wet dog scent, and I can hear the low conversations. I peered out from around a tree and took in my surroundings. The barn was lit up brightly, meaning if I could see everything illuminated around it, then they could too. I'll be easily spotted. From where I am, I can see four . I have no doubt that there’d be more on the other side of the barn. The cabin didn’t have guards. Fuck I'm stupid, of course they’d have Doyle guarded. He's in there. guards
I watched silently from the tree line for a little while longer. I know he’s in there, it’s the only place that makes any sense. Though my suspicions were confirmed when I spotted Gunner stomping out of the barn. I was far enough away to not be scented or seen, but not far enough to be unable to see the rotten look on his face. I watched the side of his face as he marched away. Even fuming mad he is still enticing to look at. He should belong to me. Mine to admire, to ravish, to love. Why did the witch get the good life, why was she more deserving than me? The anger filled my stomach and slowly spread to my chest, slowly boiling me from the inside out. Fucking Selene and her damn favouritism. Zelena is nothing but a weak bug needing to be crushed under the weight of my boot. I am the more powerful one, I am the one that everyone should love and fear. Not her. Me!
The rage spilled out of me, scorching my skin and fulling my desire for revenge. First the blue-eyed wolf, and then the bitch Zelena, planning be dammed. I slinked back into the forest and made my way further into the shrub. I found a large tree and climbed to the top. I stood on a thick branch and pulled the magic forward. It was like my fury had given me complete control over the power. My skin tingled with icy cold goosebumps. I looked down at my arms, the smooth black smoke I had been seeing over the past few years was now smothering my entire arm. The soft whisps were replaced by sharp and crackling clouds. I could feel the cool sting of it seeping into my veins. I could feel the energy of it shoot through my blood. It was powering me, filling me up with more energy and power than I had ever felt before. This is what true power feels like. Nothing like that gentle breeze crap the supposed All Mother gave me.
Using my newfound dark magic, I lifted my body off the branch and hovered above the tree. I could still feel the wind wrapping around my body protectively like before. Only now it was thick, cold, ruthless, more like the real me. Without hesitation I shot myself through the air to the other side of the clearing. Only this time I didn’t slow down or freeze. I controlled the air around me perfectly. I flew down through the branches of the trees. If anyone saw me, I have no doubt that I would have looked just like Superman. I reached the ground and straightened my body, standing upright and releasing the power. I like this new control I have. It makes me feel invincible, unstoppable, all mighty even. That being said, I still don’t want to get caught. I slipped behind some trees and looked around. I was still far enough away from the searching party not to be noticed. Though I couldn’t tell if they were expanding their search further away from the village, or if they were giving it up completely. I'm hoping for the former. The further the warriors are away from the house, the better chance I have of escaping after I end their stupid cunt of a Luna.
As I slipped back through the trees, getting closer to the shed where they were questioning the prisoner, hushed whispers caught my attention. I should bypass them, give whoever it is a wide berth and keep on going. But something in my chest was pulling me towards the voices. I veered in the direction without even intending to. But as I got closer, something inside me, a feeling of some sort, started to ache. I lifted my nose to the air and breathed in. The scent was too faint to pick up. I closed my eyes and called a gentle breeze through the trees. The wind swept through the people whispering and made its way over to my nose. I knew the scent immediately, I couldn’t forget it. It belonged to Tobias, the gigantic man I encountered in the living room. He’s handsome face, smooth chocolate skin and deep dark eyes popped into my head. My chest tightened and I clenched my legs as heat pooled in my lower belly. I shook the memory away and cursed myself for feeling any kind of desire towards that beast. He will die along with the rest of those animals.
I crept forward, being sure to stay down wind and to not make a sound. I got close enough to see the huge man through the trees but wouldn’t dare to approach any further. He was standing under some kind of garden cabana. It was painted white with vines sprouting purple flowers growing around the structure’s poles. Tobias was leaning on the railing, facing away from the overly large woman standing beside him. She was sporting tribal tattoos on her chin and both if her exposed arms. I think I am in pretty good shape, I'm strong and fit and have good stamina. But this woman, she was in a class of her own. Her biceps were bigger than Gunner’s and her angry scowl was enough to make me raise an eyebrow. It will be interesting if I come across her in a one-on-one battle.
I slid behind a tree, keeping the rest of my body out of view and focussed my hearing.
“Guardian, it is time. Have you not completed your mission?” the angry woman hissed at him.
“What would you know about my mission?” he snapped back at her without turning around.
“Granted, I don’t know all the details, but the Seer has told me enough” she replied. Tobias huffed and growled lowly.
“You don’t understand” he grumbled,
“Explain it to me. I am to help you however I must, that was my instruction” she said. Her voice was still firm and rough, but the pleading was evident.
“I didn’t know, she didn’t tell me” Tobias said softly,
“Didn’t know what?”
“She didn’t tell me about the other one, she didn’t say I’d feel for her as well”
“What are you babbling about” the woman snapped. Tobias whipped around and growled ferociously at her.
“I love Zelena, I will die for her. She is mine to protect” he yelled,
“And…” the woman grunted with frustration,
“I feel the same way for the other. She didn’t tell me I was to guard them both”. A few moments of silence passed between them before the woman spoke with a much more gentle tone.
“You are Aurora’s guardian as well” she said slowly. My guardian, what the fuck is that supposed to mean. I don’t need a guard.
“It appears so” he answered with a huff.
“Does this change things for you?” the woman asked,
“How could it not. I can’t ignore my instincts, and they want me to protect her too” he answered.
“Is this what she instructed of you?”
“No”.
They stood staring at each other for what seemed like forever. The woman finally turned away and sat on a bench under the cabana roof.
“I will help you, I swear it. But to do that, you need to give me more” the angry woman breathed out heavily. Tobias slowly slid his large body down the pole until he was sitting on the ground. I could still see him through the gaps of the wood panelling.
“She said I must choose” he grunted reluctantly,
“How do you do that?” the woman fired back without missing a beat,
“I don’t know yet. She said when the moment was right, the answer would present itself”
“Always was the aloof type” the woman grunted as she leaned back on the bench.
I maybe have an idea as to what they are talking about. Tobias is in love with Zelena, but he seems to have protective feelings for me. Fuck knows why. This appears to be bothering him, probably because what idiot grows feelings for someone after looking at them one time for all of two minutes. Also, someone has given him a mission, again fuck knows what that mission is. But for some reason, I believe either Zelena or I am standing in the way of him completing his mission. And to top it off, he thinks he needs to be my guardian. Whatever the fuck that is meant to mean, and whatever he is guarding me from. I could be reading this whole thing wrong. Maybe, maybe not. But I seriously don’t give a fuck about the big man's dilemma. I have wasted enough time listening to him dribble on. I have mutts to kill.
