The Moon's Descendant - Chapter 70 - They're here
Zelena.
Gunner and I headed around to the driveway while the others went back to their preparations. The first bus was already loaded and ready to go, the second was still putting bags in the storage hold. Roe was standing with two men, assisting them with the bags. A lot of men were standing waving up to the busses, both older and younger men, fathers and their sons, I guess. A few strong looking women were sprinkled into the crowd as well. It didn’t occur to me that the females could stay and fight as well, but why wouldn’t they? Girls are just as strong and capable as boys. Seeing the woman made a sense of pride fill my heart.
We were walking through the small crowd, over to where Roe was,
“Are you taking this one?" Gunner called to her, getting her attention.
“Yes my boy, just finishing up with the bags" she answered with a smile. She walked over to us and pulled Gunner’s head down to kiss his cheek. She gave him a tight hug and whispered in his ear. She then turned to me and pulled me into her arms.
“Take care of my baby boy okay" she said softly,
“I will" I assured her.
“Take care of yourself as well, sweet thing"
“We’ll be okay Roe".
Roe was every bit the mother that I wished I had. She spread the love and affection onto everyone around her. I'm so thankful and glad that I have her to turn to, I love her like my own Mum. She kissed my cheek and let me go, standing in front of us she grabbed my hand and Gunner’s hand.
“Both of you be careful, I couldn’t bear to see either of you hurt" she smiled weakly as a tear rolled down her cheek.
“We’ll be okay Mum, you just look after this lot and leave the rest to us" Gunner said confidently.
“Can I kiss my woman now?" Lupus chuckled from behind us.
“She’s all yours” I smiled squeezing her hand before letting it go.
“I love you Mum" Gunner said giving her another hug. I stepped aside and looked around for Nat, I spotted her standing at the back of the bus. I rushed over to get in my goodbye before she left with her mum.
“Can I get a hug?” I asked as I neared her.
“Lena” Nat squealed jumping towards me, she grabbed my shoulders and pulled me in for a hug.
“I wasn’t sure if I was going to see you before we left. I can’t believe Gunner is letting you stay, I was sure he was going to lock you in a dungeon or something. I don’t like this Lena, you should be coming with us, what if something happens to you. I just got a sister I can’t lose you now….”
“NAT!” I yelled with a small chuckle,
“You’re nervous rambling”
“Oh, sorry” she said letting me go and holding my hands. I smiled at her fondly, I’ve come to love having a sister and a girlfriend. I have been truly blessed to get not just Gunner but his family too.
“You’ll be okay, won’t you?” she asked softly,
“Of course I will, we all will” I said giving her hands a squeeze.
Lupus shouted for the last of the pack to get on the bus, so I pulled Nat in for one last hug.
“We’ll see you soon, okay” I choked out trying to hold back tears,
“Okay, take care of Smith for me” she said kissing my cheek.
“I will, now go quick” I pulled myself out of her arms and she ran over to her dad giving him a hug and a kiss on the cheek before climbing onto the bus. Gunner came up beside me grabbing my hand. He looked down at me and smiled sweetly, wiping away a tear from my cheek.
We waved to the kids smiling brightly at the windows of first bus, blissfully unaware of the incoming danger. I know it’s for the best but I don’t like having to send them away. I should be with them to protect them, but I have to stay and fight. I’m needed here more. The busses headed off down the driveway, I watched until they were completely gone from view.
“Where are we at with planning?” I asked turning to face Gunner.
“With the new info from Patrick and your Drakos vision, we can estimate that they will get here not long before sunrise. We are expecting their numbers to be close to a hundred. Most on foot with only nine or ten small tactical vehicles. Tobias brought thirty-eight fighters with him and Smith flashed saying he has gathered another twelve from Crescent Wolf. With our own fifty-seven fighters and the pack members that elected to stay behind with have just over one hundred and fifty wolves”
“Oh, wow. Will it be enough?” I asked with a deep breath,
“It’ll be more than enough, so much so that we really don’t even need you”
“Gunner, don’t start”
“Okay, okay, you can’t blame me for trying. I love you Zee, I would die if anything happened to you”
“I love you too, you don’t need to worry about me. I am so ready for this”
“Okay warrior let’s get back to the hall, I have to get an update from Rex and Felix”.

Night fell quickly, with Gunner busy and Nat and Roe gone, the house felt cold and empty. Sitting on the porch looking out over the village, I could make out some of the booby traps set up by one of the commanders. If you didn’t know where they were, you wouldn’t be able to tell they were there. That commander has a seriously dark and twisted mind, he’s set up some terrifyingly brutal traps. Gunner made sure I studied the placement of every single one, seeing as he’s ordered that I remain in the village when the fighting starts. I wouldn’t want to accidently get myself caught by one. All the lights in the village had been turned off to make it harder for the hunters to see the traps, but thanks to our werewolf vision and the light of the moon, we could all still see just fine.
Roe and the other ladies had prepared a huge feast before they left. Our troops were more than thankful for the sustenance. Can I call them troops? That makes them sound like soldiers in a war. I guess they kind of are though, aren’t they? I haven’t been able to shake the dreaded feeling of guilt playing on my mind. All these people, these wolves, they were here because of me. I hate the idea that so many of them could die because of my lineage, because someone thinks I'm valuable. My gifts are both a blessing and a curse.
Smith, Mazz and Julian returned a couple of hours ago. They have been in the hall with Gunner ever since. It's not long off midnight now, and everyone was in place and ready to go. All we can do now is wait. But the waiting, alone with my thoughts, it was driving me a little crazy. Tobias had picked up on my anxiety and thought it best to give me some space to clear my thoughts and prepare myself. I couldn’t stay in the deathly quiet house alone anymore, that’s what brought me out here onto the porch. Tobias stalked around the grounds in front of me, keeping close. A couple of his pack fighters were hanging close too. The light from the moon blanketing my skin made me feel so much better, and more energized. Kind of like the shining light was the power source, charging me up like a battery.
I laid my head back on the wooden chair and closed my eyes. I've used this Dragons Eye power twice now, no idea how I did it, but I did. With Artemis gone to the safe house, I had to try and figure it out on my own. The first time I was trying to work on my wolf senses and it just popped up. The second I was overwhelmed by fear and guilt and the power just took hold of me. But bringing it on by command was proving difficult. But I have to try. If I can locate the hunters, it’ll help Gunner and the others.
I took deep breaths and relaxed my body, letting myself melt into the chair. Although the night air was cooling down, the light from the moon was keeping my skin warm. The hunters, where are the hunters. I tried to concentrate and picture them in my mind. I inhaled deeply and felt my body lift off into the air. The next thing I knew I was high in the sky, looking down at a winding road. I could see six big black trucks, driving one behind the other. Where are the hunters? I quickly flew closer to the ground, the sky flashed past me like I was in fast forward. I came to a stop and was floating among the treetops. Below me were rows and rows of people, all dressed in black and carrying huge weapons. I found them. I flew back up higher into the sky and could see the coast in the distance with small lights splattered around it. I know where this is.
I gasped loudly as I lurched forward in the chair. Tobias was standing in front of me with concern written all over his face.
“GUNNER!” I screamed.
“What is it little one?” Tobias urged me,
“They’re nearly here” was all I could say.
Gunner came flying out the front door with Smith and Lupus following close behind. He pushed past Tobias and crouched in front of me taking hold of my hands.
“What’s wrong?” he rushed out.
“They’re here, I saw them. They'll be at the borders any minute”.
I flashed him parts of my vision, the hunters walking and the view of coast in the distance. His brows pressed together in a frown as he nodded to me and stood up. I followed suit and stood up also, I looked at the men gathered around me. Goddess please protect them. Gunner’s eyes glazed over, he was flashing with someone. I looked at Lupus and he was doing the same. A loud bang off in the distance, from the other side of the house, broke them out of the flash and got everyone's attention.
“The spikes” Gunner breathed,
“They’re at the end of the driveway. Cole reported them approaching the southern border” he said quickly.
“Spartan reported them at the western border too” Lupus inserted.
“To your positions and show no mercy, as no mercy will be shown to you” Gunner snapped. He, Lupus, Smith and Tobias threw their heads back and howled loudly, signalling the start of the battle. The sound echoed through the village and into the forest, no doubt reaching the ears of everyone nearby, human and Were alike. Lupus turned and jumped from the porch, changing into his wolf mid-air and bounded towards the furthest tree line. Smith was already on bended knee, mid-way through his change. Gunner grabbed my face and pulled me to him roughly, he crashed his lips to mine and kissed me hard. I grasped onto his shoulders and held him tight.
“I’ll be back for you, stay safe little wolf” he whispered before pulling away. He joined Smiths wolf at the bottom of the porch steps, he glanced at me once more before snapping his head to the side and changing into his wolf. His beautiful silver wolf had grown. He was taller, more muscular and he oozed power and dominance. They took off around the front of the house, leaving Tobias and I alone on the porch.
“You ready for this little Goddess?” he asked looking down at me.
“Definitely” I answered with a smirk. I cracked my knuckles and headed down the porch steps.
“Oooh, this is going to be fun” Tobias chuckled behind me.
