The Moon's Descendant - Chapter 73 - War

Gunner.

“They’re here, I saw them. They'll be at the borders any minute” Zelena rushed out. She flashed me pictures, I saw the hunters converging on the borders and an aerial view of forest around our village and the coast in the distance. She had another Drakos vision. Excellent. They were definitely closer than we predicted, they had to be only minutes away from the borders now.
***Cole report***
***They are at the edge southern border, heavy weapons and high numbers of soldiers***
***How close?***
***Two minutes maybe less***
An explosion, a loud bang and the sound of bursting tyres brought me out of my flash with Cole. They’ve hit the traps at the end of the driveway.
“The spikes. They’re at the end of the driveway. Cole reported them approaching the southern border” I said turning to my father.
“Spartan reported them at the western border too” he informed me. They have us surrounded, just as we predicted.
“To your positions and show no mercy, as no mercy will be shown to you” I snarled quickly. I tossed my head back and howled to my pack, readying them for the start of the battle. Tobias, Smith and Dad howled along with me. I could hear the replied howls from the pack and fighters almost instantly. Dad jumped down from the porch, changing through the air and took off to his position at the western border. I stepped forward taking Zelena’s face and kissing her hard. She had better listen to what I’ve been saying. I know she is powerful but I don’t need her acting like a hero. I just need her alive.
“I’ll be back for you, stay safe little wolf” I said softly before running down the porch steps to where Smith was waiting for me, already in his wolf form. I looked up at her once more before initiating my own change.
It was almost instant this time. I hadn’t changed into my wolf since before my ascension. I felt stronger and more powerful, my wolf had transformed into a true Alpha now. He was bigger, faster, stronger and his senses were way more magnified. I could smell human in the air, mixed with gun powder and metal. I could hear their boots stomping through the forest and their erratic heartbeats. I was now the ultimate predator and protector.
I dug in my claws and took off around the front of the house to the driveway with Smith tight on my heels.
***Fight well my brothers and sisters***
I flashed to my pack, they growled, barked and howled in response. I could hear the hunters at the end of the driveway yelling and crying out from their burning cars. A large dark grey wolf ran over from the edge of the tree line, followed by four more smaller wolves. I couldn’t flash with him, so he’s not from my pack. He bowed his head slightly and growled, nodding towards the end of the of the dirt road. I growled and clawed at the dirt three times. Gunshots began to echo through the night air, my ears prickled up registering the direction that they were coming from. I crouched down and launched myself off in the direction of the hunter’s vehicles and the gunfire. I could hear the heavy thumping of paws and excited growls behind me. Smith and the other wolves were following close. The light of the fire was visible ahead as we closed in on them. Three dead human bodies were laid in front of one of the cars, the smell of their burning flesh filled my nose.
***My Alpha***
***Rex***
Rex’s sandy blonde wolf threw the body of a hunter to the ground as we passed the first car. I saw movement behind him to the right. A hunter was lifting his gun and taking aim at Rex. I leaped over him and twisted my body through the air. Angling my head back I gripped the head of the hunter in my jaws as I continued through the air. I felt the warm metallic taste of blood and the satisfying sound of a crunch and a rip. I landed back on all fours and the hunters body rolled through the dirt ahead of me. The sound of a gun clicking caught my attention, I spat out the hunter’s head and turned to the source of the sound. A hunter leaning against an overturned vehicle was fumbling with his gun. I stalked forward as he looked on at me in terror, he finally lifted his gun to point at me. I struck my paw out and smacked the gun from his hands, sending it skidding across the dirt. The sound of his terrified scream echoed around me as I leaped forward taking his throat between my teeth. His blood spilled over my coat as I ripped his jugular apart.
***Alpha we are taking heavy fire and being pushed back. We need more wolves at the northern forest***
***Back up is coming Felix***
I looked around at the other wolves, the visiting fighters were exceptional. I spotted Smith tearing the head from a hunter’s body, he was handling himself well. I puffed out my chest and filled with pride as he leapt onto the next hunter. I heard a whistle blow past my ear and then another, closer this time. I ducked my head down as I looked over to where it came from. Three hunters were standing side by side, marching forward as they rang off shot after shot. Who trained these idiots, because they are useless. I growled and bounded towards them, another shot flew past me and another landed at my feet. One of the hunters suddenly flew backwards through the air and let out a loud scream. That’s when I saw the dark grey wolf behind them. He had the hunter pinned to the ground and his teeth around his neck. I jumped onto the next hunter that was quickly taking aim at the grey wolf. I tore his arm from his body and he shrieked in pain, I clamped my jaws around his neck and pulled making his head pop off like a cork. The grey wolf jumped over my body and landed on the last hunter. Picking him up with his teeth he tossed him through the air with ease. The hunter crashed into a tree trunk with a loud crunch, that would be his spine.
Pleased with the fighter’s abilities I growled and nodded my head, ushering for him to follow me. He understood and nodded in agreement. We raced off toward the north and quickly reached Felix and his battalion. They had been forced back far from the borders edge. I took in the scene before me. Bullets were flying all around, I could see a few unmoving wolves sprawled out on the ground.
We can’t get through without them picking us off
Felix flashed. He was shielded behind a large tree trunk, his fighters were doing the same. I looked up, following the trunk of the tree, then peered out at the other trees. Large trucks with strong horizontal branches, the idea hit me. Perfect trees for climbing.
***The trees, use the trees to get behind them***
***Climb***
Felix’s brown wolf jumped onto the tree trunk he was taking cover behind and began the climb. I launched onto a tree and dug in my claws, climbing onto the first branch and then easily jumping to the next one up. The remaining wolves followed suit, climbing up and then jumping across to the next tree. The hunters were oblivious and continued to shoot at our previous positions. We leaped from tree branch to tree branch until we were above the hunters. They had still not noticed our new vantage point. I looked over the trees around me, the wolves were waiting for my command. I waited until the hunters had marched further forward so that we could take them down from behind.
***NOW!***
On my command the wolves all begun to leap down from the trees landing on and near the hunters. My paws hit the ground mere metres from a hunter, I lurched forward gripping my teeth around the crook of his neck before he had the chance to turn around. The bullets slowly stopped firing as the dying screams of the hunters took their place. I flung this hunter around smashing his body into a tree beside me. He hit the tree hard and the sound of his snapping bones thrilled me.
A sharp pain and a burning sensation grew in my left shoulder. I glanced down and saw my blood spreading through my fur. I looked to where the shot came from and spotted a hunter lining me up for another shot. I growled ferociously and leaped towards him pinning him to the ground. He got off another shot as he fell back, just missing my head. I felt a pain in my ear and warm blood begin to run down the side of my head and neck. Infuriated that I let him hit me, I wrapped my teeth around his neck and ripped the flesh from his throat. He spluttered and coughed as his head fell back in the dirt and his blood pooled around him.
***You’re hit Alpha***
Felix flashed as his nudged his head into my side.
***I’ll be fine***
***Yes Alpha***
I looked around at the remaining hunters. They were being taken down one by one by the fighters easily. A sudden wave of energy flew through the trees washing over me. It came from the direction of the pack house. Zelena. The energy was identical to what I felt from her in the cabin when she killed her father. This is bad, Zelena needs help. I went to run for the house but the pain in my shoulder slowed me. Damn fucking bullet. I snapped my head back and changed back into my human form. I looked down at my bloodied shoulder. The skin was torn open and peeled back by seared flesh. It was dark red and still bleeding. It’ll be fine, worry about it later. I held my arm in place across my chest. The same large grey wolf came up beside me and held out its hind leg. He growled and huffed, nodding his head to the leg. I hadn’t noticed before but there were a pair of shorts tied to his ankle. Smart idea, I’ll have to remember that. I grabbed the shorts and pulled them on with one hand. We ran for the pack house side by side and I kept pace with this wolf no problem. As we neared the tree line, the ringing of gunfire at the house was indisputable.
