Mother of the Moon - Chapter 119 - For the Alpha and the Goddess
Zelena.
Lupus led me down the porch and out into the clearing. Strings of white lanterns hung from one side of the clearing to the other, filling the space with beautiful glowing lights. A red carpet had been laid out from the bottom of the porch, all the way to the stage, making me feel like some kind of movie star. The crowd of Weres was huge. Must be double the size of Tri-Moon. They gathered on either side of the carpet, bunching in together to get as close as they could to the stage. As we walked through the middle of them, they knelt to their knee with their heads bowed and one hand over their heart. It was deathly silent, with only the sound of my thumping heart filling my ears.
“Breathe” Lupus whispered. I sucked in a sharp intake of air, unaware that I had been holding my breath. As we came to the stage, Gunner stepped forward. He wore a dark grey suit and emerald green tie that matched my dress. His hair was combed neatly and he shaved, giving his face a fresh look. The soft glow of the lanterns made his bright blue eyes shine. He held his hand out for me and I just about jumped forward to reach him. He chuckled at my eager reaction and clasped his fingers around my own. He leaned in and kissed my cheek, holding his face against mine.
“You look positively delicious” he whispered and then leaned back with a devilish smirk. We left Lupus at the edge of the stage and Gunner walked with me into the middle, where we stood in front of Artemis. He was wearing his usual brown fur coat that hung past he knees. He was holding a giant silver cup that had two large handles on either side. He held the cup forward and Gunner took it from his hands.
***Grab the handle closest to me and hold the cup in between us***
I did as he said and looked out over the crowd. All eyes were on us. I saw a few familiar faces from our pack and few that I recognised from Crescent Wolf. Right in the front next to Roe and Nat, stood Tobias, with who I could only assume where his brothers and parents. His smile took up half of his face and his huge stature took up half of the crowd. I smiled back at him gave him a small nod.
“Tonight, we welcome the new Alpha and his Luna” Artemis’s heavily accented voice called out loudly.
***Just follow my lead***
Gunner flashed me and winked.
“Alpha, do you swear to protect your pack, care for them, love them and lead them with justice and kindness. Forsaking all others” Artemis asked.
“I swear” Gunner answered, smiling down at me.
“Luna, do you swear to protect your pack, care for them, love them and lead them with justice and kindness. Do you swear to keep your Alpha, ensuring his rule will always be just?”
“I swear” I answered.
“Your hand Alpha” Artemis said stepping up to Gunner. Without taking his eyes off me, he held out his hand and Artemis grabbed his index finger. Using a long needle, Artemis pricked the end of his finger and squeezed it over the cup. A single drop of blood fell into the liquid.
“Luna” Artemis said asking for my hand.
***It’s fine, it doesn’t hurt***
***I know it wont***
I held my hand for Artemis and he repeated the same thing with my blood.
“Now drink” he demanded taking a step back.
***I drink first, then you, then the pack will cheer***
***Okay***
Keeping my hand on the handle of the cup I tilted it to Gunner’s lips. He drank a large mouthful and then smiled down at me, shifting the cup to my mouth. I drank a sip and smiled, it’s just wine, really good wine. Artemis took the cup from us and Gunner held my hand, turning us to the pack and throwing our joined hands into the air. The moment that they hit the sky, the entire crowd before us called out in screams of joy and celebration. After a few seconds their happy cries turned into scattered howls. Soon enough the entire village was a chorus of howls, echoing through the early night sky. Gunner tugged me into his chest, wrapping his arm around my waist and threw his head back and howled. Roe, Nat, Lupus, Tobias, everyone, they were all howling to the sky. A soft wind flew around my body, sending a shiver crawling up my spine. My skin prickled with goosebumps and an urge to cry to the moon filled me to my essence, taking hold of every part of me. I lifted my chin and howled to night, to the moon, to the stars, to the Goddess herself.
As the chaos died down and the howling stopped, all the people in the crowd were buzzing with excitement and adrenalin. Their wild eyes stared up at us and their chests heaved with heavy breaths. The atmosphere was electric, and I wanted nothing more than to throw myself to the wolves, pun intended, and revel in their elated passion. I stepped forward, just a little, keeping my hand in Gunner’s. I could feel the tingling sensations running through my arms and legs. My powers were surfacing. Only, it wasn’t me calling them forth. It was something from deep inside me, something I didn’t know was there. The force of the energy burning through me was unlike anything that I had felt up until this point. This force, this energy, it was primal.
I lifted my other hand in front of me to study my fingers. They felt alight with fire. I twisted and curled my fingers and pale blue light, similar to electric sparks, began to burst from my hand. I released my hold on Gunner and brought my other hand to my face. The same thing happened. The sharp electricity shot through my skin and up along my arms and the back of my neck. I felt a tingling in my scalp and a weightlessness, the feeling shifted back down my neck to my chest a stomach. I looked up to the moon, its pale glow bathed me in a warm light. With one final blow the energy surged through my entire body, encasing me light, wrapping around my every cell and flowing out of me. My head flew back, and my arms flew out beside me. A feeling of absolute power exploded out of me, a power unlike anything I had experience before.
The power rolling through me was not mine, it was hers. She’s here. The Moon Goddess. She is here with me now. I can feel her arms wrapping around me, holding me. Her love and her blessing, its suffocating in the most intoxicating way. Her presences was a shining light in the dark, a gentle hand, love. She is love.
I opened my eyes and looked back over the crowd. Though I was no longer on the stage. I was now flying about eight feet above it. The pale blue light now shone over my entire body. Without giving it a second thought, I willed my power to move me, to let me glide over the crowd below. And I did. A slow and deliberate motion. I held my hands out with my palms facing down and let the lights and energy fall from my fingers, bathing the people below me in tiny sparks that danced across their skin. I circled over the crowd and came back to the stage. With a pull of my hand, Gunner floated up to my side. His eyes were wide and full of wonder.
“What is this?” he spoke.
“It’s the Goddess” I smiled at him. I grabbed hold of his hand and the energy, the power, the sparks, they filtered through my fingers, I could feel them seeping into him. He hissed and bent his head back, lifting his eyes to the sky. After a moment he looked back at me. Only this time, his eyes were glowing a bright silver. They have done this before, during the war with the hunters. He’s accessing the power of the Goddess. Through me. He told me once that when I tap into my powers, my eyes glow yellow. When he taps into my powers his eyes glow silver.
***You’re accessing my power***
***How do you know?***
***Trust me***
***I shouldn’t be… we can’t***
***The Goddess wouldn’t allow it to happen if she truly didn’t want you to. Can’t you feel her?***
***I don’t know what I feel, it’s just warm and soothing***
***That’s her. That’s her love, her blessing***
***You’re certain?***
***I am***
Gunner gazed at me as we floated above the stage together. His eyes glowed brilliantly, I could come to love this colour on him. He smiled and nodded his head in agreement. I closed my eyes and said a hushed prayer to the Moon Goddess, to the all mother. ‘Thank you, mother’ I whispered. A warm feeling flooded my chest, a feeling of love and adoration took hold inside of me. She is a part of me. Now and always.
