Mother of the Moon - Chapter 170 - Cole

Zelena.

“Oh Cole” I said weakly as I eyed all of his wounds. I went to touch his cheek but stopped. Last time I saw Cole, he still hated me. Has that changed or is this just Cole doing his Beta duties? Cole grabbed my shoulders and turned me around in his grip, looking over my body at my wounds.
“Are you okay? Did he do this to you?” Cole asked urgently as he spotted the blood on my shirt. Without hesitation, he grabbed the hem of my shirt and lifted it up to see the bite marks on my stomach. Cole growled and gently ran his hand over the small puncture wounds.
“What happened?” He asked me roughly,
“Galterio” I answered softly. I swallowed hard and tried not to let myself cry at Cole’s show of concern, I’ve really missed him.
“He, uh, he got mad when I tried to escape” I stuttered.
“Can you walk?” he asked as his eyes moved down to my mangled ankle,
“Maybe, not far though” I said quickly. Cole didn’t waste any time in sweeping out my knees and lifting me into his arms,
“Cole no, you’re hurt too” I argued and tried to wriggle out of his hold.
“I’ll be fine, but we need to get you out of here” he answered and began to jog awkwardly away from the house.
“No wait, Artemis is inside. It was him, he was working with Galterio” I said and pointed back to the house. Cole looked at the house and then at me, then out into the forest before looking back at the house once more. He closed his eyes for a second and opened them a gain.
“Others are on the way to apprehend Artemis. But you are the most important, we have to get you to safety first” he said and kept jogging. He was struggling to run, I could tell he was in pain. But he would never admit it. I tried to lean my head on his chest, but he was covered in blood. Plus the bobbing around from the running would probably make me sick… again. The sound of battle was echoing around us, from all directions. How we hadn’t come across anyone yet was amazing. Cole stopped running and ducked behind a large tree, just in time to avoid three wolves running towards the house. As we hid behind the tree, Cole leaned down and sniffed at me.
“You smell different” he whispered quietly. My cheeks burned with embarrassment, I couldn’t tell Cole what I had to do with Galterio to get out. I think he already hates me enough, I don’t need to pile on more reasons for him to justify his hatred.
“It’s Galterio, I think” I whispered back. Cole sniffed again and his eyebrows furrowed together.
“It’s not that, you don’t smell like a male, you smell sweeter”. Cole looked out from around the tree but quickly ducked behind again as two more wolves ran past. Does your scent change when you are pregnant? No. I don’t think so, if so, Gunner would have smelt it already. Unless it only happens when you become further along. I don’t even know how far along I am. Couldn’t be more than maybe two weeks. But people don’t have morning sickness at two weeks. That can’t be right. I should tell Cole. Gunner should have been the first to know. But that has already been blown apart by Galterio and Artemis, and their knowledge of my little situation. Should I tell Cole? Maybe it’s vital he knows while he is trying to get us out of here. Maybe it will help him stop hating me so much. Maybe it will do the opposite. Ah fuck it.
“Uh… Cole” I whispered,
“Yeh?” he said as he brought his head back around to me,
“I um… I’m… I’m pregnant” I said softly, so softly I don’t think he even heard me. Cole stared at me blankly, eyes wide, not blinking. He quickly shook his head and cleared his throat,
“You’re sure?” he asked, while looking back around the tree and out into the forest.
“Yes, very sure” I whispered,
“Well that explains a lot” he said quietly as he ran forward a bit before crouching down behind a large bush.
“What…” I started to ask, but he quickly pressed his hand to my mouth. We heard rustling in the forest brush and low growls. They were getting closer to us, and by the look on Cole’s face, I don’t think he knows if they are friendly or not. Cole squatted behind the bush with me across his lap, both of us deathly silent. After a few minutes, the rustling died down and the growling went away. Cole grabbed my chin and turned my head to look at him. He did the ‘zip your lip’ gesture and then pointed to his ear, he then spun his finger around in the air. I think I got what he is saying. Be quiet, they can hear us. I nodded my head and pressed myself into his chest. Cole slowly stood up and took careful steps towards another large tree. We got to the tree and Cole pressed me into it, shielding the rest of my body with his own. We stayed there for a brief minute while he looked around some more, and then we started moving again.
Cole was taking slow and cautious steps, his eyes moving all over the forest as he went. I was looking up at Cole’s face, studying the three deep open slashes on his cheek. His head suddenly flew back in twisted agony, and his grip on my legs and waist tightened to the point that it hurt. Cole looked like he was screaming, but no sound was coming out. Panic exploded inside my chest, my heartbeat quickened and my breathing got harsh. I looked all over his face, searching for an answer to the problem. It took me a second to move my eyes down. When I did, the world around me stopped. Cole’s hold on me disappeared as his arms dropped, and I fell to the ground. I sat at his feet and stared up at his contorted face. I screamed out, a scream I have never felt before. A scream that shook me to the core. The ground beneath me shook and the trees around me creaked and cracked and splintered to pieces. All matter of forest brush lifted off the ground and began to circle around us in its own little tornado. My gaze stayed on Cole’s face. His head bobbled down and his eyes found mine. His glassy, tear filled, scared eyes. His lips twitched up into a weak smile and his eyes fluttered closed. My head went back, my arms spread open wide, and a burst of energy exploded out of me. It sent everything flying outward in one giant wave. Tears streamed down my face as I looked up at Cole. Right in the middle of his chest was a bloodied fist.
Cole’s body was lifted off the ground and then hurled through the air away from me. I watched as his lifeless body hit the ground hard, rolled for a bit and then stopped. He didn’t get up. He didn’t move. He just laid there, dead. Cole is dead. A deep and dark rage ignited in every corner of my being. The darkness that I have fought so hard to keep away, managed to burst through the cracks, disintegrating all the walls I have built to contain it. Only this time, I welcomed it. I moved my eyes back to the one responsible. Galterio. He stood with a proud and evil smirk plastered across his face. Cole’s blood was smeared over his arm, all the way up to his elbow. Galterio clicked his tongue and shook his head slowly from side to side.
“I told you Beauty, you are mine now” he said with a wicked grin.
