Twin Moon - Chapter 276 - My Rock
Zelena.
I pushed myself up off Tobias’s chest and sat on the floor beside him. I stretched my arms up and stifled the groan that wanted to scream out of my mouth
“How do you do that?” I asked as I rolled my neck,
“Do what?” he asked back,
“Make me feel so alive and wired, even when I'm ready to slip away and sleep for the next few days?”. Tobias sat up and crossed his large legs in front of him.
“It’s what I was chosen for” he said blankly.
“What? You were chosen to keep my energy levels up?” I scoffed with a sarcastic laugh. I quickly covered my mouth and kneeled up to look over the top of the two basinets. Both B. and G. were still fast asleep, thankfully. I sat back down and turned back to Tobias with a silly grin. He was staring at me with such a stern and serious look on his face, it made my smile melt away instantly.
“What?” I asked worriedly,
“You’re stronger than you give yourself credit for” he said in a hushed whisper,
“Uh... Thanks?” I replied awkwardly, feeling a little caught off guard by the sudden shift in seriousness of the conversation.
“I mean it Zelena. You have more strength than you know, and you are powerful beyond belief. You’re going to change this world for the better before you’re done with it”
“I appreciate all the hype, but why are you talking like this?”
“Like what?”
“Like you’re saying goodbye”. Tobias dropped his head and looked at his hands on his knees. My stomach dropped and fear filled my belly.
“Are you?” I asked with a shaky voice,
“Am I what?” he replied, lifting his head to stare at me again,
“Are you leaving?”.
I stared into his deep dark eyes, waiting for an answer that didn’t come. The longer he sat quietly, the more fear built up inside me, until I was at the point that quivers were rolling down my arms and legs.
“Tobias?” I asked with a squeak. He leaned forward and wrapped his hand around mine.
“You and I will never be apart, not truly” he said gently. A tear ran down my cheek and he lifted his hand to wipe it away with his thumb.
“You’re just, you’re my rock, you know. I don’t know what I'd do without you” I sniffled as more tears started to fall. I don't even know why I'm crying. I was feeling so energetic one second ago, now I'm overflowing with emotions. I think I need to rest. Tobias smiled and held his arms open. I chuckled softly and crawled into his lap, just like a child would with their parent. He wrapped his giant arms around my small frame, cocooning me against him. I sniffed and pressed my face into his chest. I love the way he smells. It relaxes me like nothing else. Gunner’s scent gets my heart racing, Tobias’s scent keeps me cool. They play off each other perfectly.
“Why are you crying?” Tobias chuckled quietly,
“I don’t know” I blubbered out. He laughed and squeezed me tighter.
“Poor little puppy, so full of emotions” he teased and nuzzled his nose into the top of my head.
“Shut up” I whined and pushed out of his arms,
“Let’s change the subject” I offered and wiped my nose with the back of my hand.
“Alrighty, go on then” he smiled teasingly.
“Tell me who the Meļņasirds are and why everyone was so scared of them” I said without hesitating. The smile left his face and deep frown lines took its place. His lips curled back, and a low growl sounded in his throat.
“They’re dirty, rotten, money hungry scoundrels. They will do anything for a bit of cash, and they have no honour” he snarled in a harsh whisper. Well, that’s some rough commentary from a usually quiet Were, consider my interests peaked.
“Wow, okay. Like what?” I asked gently.
“They kill mercilessly. And they have no issues with killing humans” he snapped back. His voice was still quiet, but I could still hear the anger and venom beneath it.
“I don’t understand, I've killed humans too” I said slowly,
“No, you killed hunters, they don’t count. Doyle and his pack of mutts will kill innocent humans if there’s enough money in it for them”
“They get paid to kill people, like some kind of werewolf assassins?” I asked shocked.
“Yes” Tobias growled,
“Who pays them though?”
“Anyone from an Alpha of a competing pack to high-ranking government officials. There's been whispers that they have cleared small human villages or fishing towns to make way for industrial shit. They have even killed off an entire family, all so that their land could be bought for cheap by some big corporation. There's no limit to what that mongrel, Doye, would do” he snarled out the last part.
I had to pause to consider what Tobias was telling me. This is totally new to everything else I have heard about so far. I know that packs fight between each other. Whether it be over territory, money, pack members, whatever. I understand that things can get heated, considering our possessive and compulsive instincts. But I never would have thought that Alpha’s would go as far as hiring assassins. Not just Alpha’s but people in the government, human people. That either means that there are regular humans that know about our existence, or there are Weres in the government, or both. Why were Doyle and his pack in Russia though? That was the only place where the packs were being attacked, that we know of anyway. Could it have been targeted, is it political based intentions. Were human homes involved in the attacks, or just Weres. This is a lot.
“That’s intense” I huffed and rubbed my temple. I don’t know what else to say.
“Why do you think they were in Russia? Do you think they were really just investigating the attacks?” I asked him quietly,
“I don’t know. But I do know that Doyle doesn’t do anything for free. Someone paid him to look into those attacks. If that’s what he was really doing” he answered. I could basically hear the clogs turning inside his head. He is thinking a lot about this.
“But why would Doyle bring the survivor here? We didn’t pay him” I exclaimed,
“I’m still working on that part. It doesn’t make sense yet” he said slowly, his voice slowly faded off with the last word.
It's scary, I get it now. I'm not scared of Doyle, that fool doesn’t scare me. I am afraid of who is paying his bills though. Could Tobias be right, could he have come here because someone told him to. If so, then we could all be in danger. We need to find out why he was really in Russia, and who sent him here. That must be our top priority. We need to know what kind of danger he presents, to the babies, to the pack, to Gunner, to all of us.
