Twin Moon - Chapter 288 - He's Hurt

Zelena.

“She agreed, albeit hesitantly. But she agreed. She was just scared and uncertain, especially after learning I was an Alpha, and everything that went down with Doyle. I didn’t force her, I just helped her” Gunner said convincingly. I took a slow deep breath and close my eyes for a second. I know Gunner would never do something to hurt a woman. He would have felt the urgent need to bring her home, to fulfill the prophecy. Even if he didn’t know it at the time. I can’t fault him for that. I opened my eyes and took his hand.
“I don’t like how it went down, but I know you had to do what you had to do” I told him as I lifted his hand to my cheek. I pressed my cheek to the back of his hand and held it there. He gently turned it over and cupped my cheek, rubbing his thumb across the corner of my mouth.
“What was your plan, my love?” Gunner said softly. I looked up to meet his adoring gaze. I will never tire of the way he looks at me. The love that he can hold in a single gaze is breathtaking. I turned and pressed my lips to the palm of his hand then rested my head on his chest for a brief moment. After a few seconds, I stepped out of Gunner’s arms again and faced the waiting men.
“The village needs to be cleared of all pack members. She is stronger and more powerful than I think you have anticipated” I began.
“She has been killing off packs across the country, yet she has somehow managed to come out unscathed each time. That’s very unusual. We can’t risk our people's lives, so we have to get them out of here” I continued,
“That has been agreed to by all of us already” Felix added.
“Good. Next, the fighters need to surround the village, but stay out of sight. If she tries to run, we need to be able to stop her”
“Yes, good idea” Smith nodded along.
“Then, I will face her” I said sternly.
“Not alone” Gunner growled lowly. I huffed and took his hand.
“Not completely alone, no. I will need you there. You're going to put the force field up around us, keeping everything on the outside safe from whatever happens on the inside”
“And what is it you think is going to happen inside the force field?” Smith snapped. He looked and seemed a little upset. His mouth was set in a mad frown, but his eyes were scared.
“Like I said before, I don’t know if it will work” I answered hesitantly. I am seriously starting to doubt myself. I don’t even know if I can do what I'm thinking of doing, or if it is even possible.
“Do you want to share with the group anyway?” Smith again, his annoyance clear in his voice.
“I’m going to take her wolf” I answered with a firm nod.
“You’re going to do what now?” Lupus blanched, seemingly shocked.
“Selene gave me the idea. When she threatened to take Gunner’s wolf. Tobias explained what he thought that would do to him” I answered.
“And what did Tobias think was going to happen?” Gunner asked.
“He said that because you were an Alpha, losing your wolf would make you weak and eventually kill you”.
“If you’re going to kill her, why would you want to do it so brutally like that? Taking her wolf, taking away that side of her soul, it’s barbaric” Lupus scoffed somewhat disgusted by the idea.
“First off, I don’t want to kill her. Aurora isn’t an Alpha, so it shouldn’t have the same effects” I snipped back.
“She avoids her wolf, she hasn’t bonded with it. I don’t think she even likes that part of herself” Gunner said thoughtfully.
“See, if that’s the case, then maybe she’ll be okay. If her wolf dies, so will the heightened feelings and instincts. If she has no wolf, if she is just human, maybe she can stay alive” I said hopefully. Everyone was quiet for a moment, thinking it over, going through the possibilities. Felix was the first to speak,
“It’s not a terrible plan” he said slowly while running his hand through his hair.
“But how will you do it?” Smith jumped in,
“I’m not entirely sure. I hope that when the time comes, Mother will help me”.
“You are basing your entire plan on The Moon Goddess picking sides? Not just sides, but picking between her children?” Lupus asked incredulously.
“Lupus is right, what if something goes wrong? What if she doesn’t help you, what if you can’t do it? What if Whiskey hurts you before you can do anything? I’m not sold on this plan Zee, there are too many variables” Smith said while shaking his head. I sat down slowly and watched as Gunner, Felix, Smith, and Lupus argued through the countless possibilities and unforeseeable problems with my plan. It doesn’t really matter what they think though. There is no other way. Either I try to take away her wolf side or I’m forced to kill her. That, or she kills me first. Either they help me, or they don’t, this is how it’s going to be. I trust Mother, I truly believe that she will help me.
I sat quietly and listened. Goosebumps run over my body, and I shivered. The air turned and something felt different. I think I'm getting too tired to pay attention. Pain bloomed in my chest, silently taking my breath. I sat forward and rubbed the center of my chest. I really need to rest. I stood up abruptly and waved my arms, capturing everyone's attention.
“Guys, guys, guys. Stop. We can stay here for days going through all the things that could go wrong. But we don’t have that kind of time, and we don’t have any other options” I said exasperatedly while still rubbing at the spot on my chest.
“Incorrect” Smith argued,
“One of us could kill her instead” he said with his finger up in the air.
“You know that’s not how the prophecy goes” I scoffed.
“It doesn’t say specifically who has to kill who, only that one can survive” he continued.
“Smith, please” I started but was cut off by Gunner,
“Smith, enough. I know you’re worried about Zelena, we all are. But there has to be...” Gunner was interrupted by the hall door flying open and Roe standing in the frame, her face pale and her eyes wide.
“She’s here, in the village. She killed Konstantin and his guards” Roe rushed out. Lupus was at her side in a split second, wrapping his arms around his Mate. My skin ran cold and the pain in my chest got worse. I folded over and grunted, grasping at my chest.
“Zee, what’s wrong?” Gunner asked urgently as he grabbed my shoulders.
“Something’s wrong. It feels like my chest is being torn open from the inside” I grunted on a harsh breath.
“It’s Tobias” Roe gasped,
“He was... He’s... He’s” Roe stuttered as she began to cry while shaking in Lupus’ arms.
“He’s what, Roe?” I shouted from my hunched position.
“He’s been hurt” she forced out fearfully. My skin ran cold, and my stomach dropped. Oh Goddess, no. Please, don’t take Tobias.
