Mother of the Moon - Chapter 145 - The Cause
Zelena.
The sky was a clear crystal blue and the bright sunlight twinkled on the top of the water. Coming to the beach was a fantastic idea. I wanted time to just relax and hang out with my friends, even if Cole was still a no show. The soft white sand felt great under my feet. I curled my toes and dug them under the sand. Smith and Nat dropped the esky and picnic basket and laid out some towels. I sat down on the edge of a towel and buried my feet into the sand. Smith stripped down to his swim shorts and Nat slid her dress down her body and let it drop at her feet. She was wearing a skimpy black string bikini that sat high up on her hips and barely covered her breasts. But hot damn does she have a banging body. Watching her I felt a little self-conscious. She is gorgeous, like a swimsuit model. Gunner stood at my side and pulled his shirt over his head before dropping it on the towel behind me.
“You coming in?” he asked looking down at me,
“Not yet, I want to sunbake for a bit” I answered and pulled off Gunner’s t-shirt that I was still wearing. I dropped it behind me and began to unbutton my denim shorts. Gunner’s growl snapped my attention back to his angry face.
“I thought I said you were not going to wear that” he growled at me while tracing his hungry eyes over my exposed stomach and chest.
“It’s a bikini Gunner, not lingerie, you need to chill out” I snapped at him,
“You’re pushing it Zelena” he snapped back.
“Can you please not start. I really want to just enjoy this day in the sunshine, don’t ruin it for me”.
His hard expression softened slightly. I could tell he was still not happy, but I could also tell that he wasn’t going to argue any further. He leaned down and kissed my forehead before jogging off to the water where Nat and Smith were already splashing each other. He tackled Smith into an oncoming wave before quickly getting up and running away again. Smith stood up and coughed out a mouthful of water before he shook his shaggy red hair and darted off after Gunner. They looked like they were having a lot of fun, and the water looks very inviting. I hadn’t told anyone that I can’t swim. I never learnt how. Hank wasn’t one to teach his pretend daughter the pleasures of life, like how to swim or ride a bike. But I wasn’t going to let that tiny detail ruin this gorgeous beach day.
I unbuttoned my shorts and pulled them down my hips, lifting my butt I dragged them off and discarded them on the towel with my shirt. I pushed my sunglasses up my nose, laid back down on the towel and splayed my arms out at my sides. The sun danced across my exposed skin and warmed my body from the outside in. The screams and laughing of the others got quieter the further out in the water they went, until I could barely hear them.
I was laying with my eyes closed when I felt an unknown presence close by. I perched myself up onto my elbows and looked down along the water's edge. We had walked a fair way away from the car park, any other people visiting the beach wouldn’t come down this far. I was right, there was no one else to be seen on the beach. I looked over my shoulder at the tree line. At first, I saw no one, but then a figure stepped out from behind a tree. I gasped and shot upright, turning my body to face the figure. I ripped off my glasses and studied the person closer. It was a man, a man that looked familiar somehow. He raised his hand and motioned for me to come to him. I looked back to where Gunner and the others were swimming, completely oblivious of me or the mystery man. Looking back to the man he had taken another step forward, the sun now illuminated his face, and I knew who he was right away. I stood up slowly, letting my eyes scan the trees around him but I saw no one else.
I took a step, and then another and another. Slowly, so very slowly, I walked to him. My eyes never stopped looking for signs of others, whilst still glancing back to Gunner. This could be a terrible idea, I know that, I'm not stupid. But I have to know what he wants, why he came here. If Gunner notices, if he sees him, I won’t get another chance. As I got closer, he began to back away, back into the shadows of the trees. I froze, hesitant to follow him. My gut told me to turn back, but my head told me to keep going, to get answers. I looked back at the water, Gunner’s handsome face smiling and laughing in the sunlight, had still not noticed my movements. I stepped into the shadows, walking further into the trees, my bikini clad body immediately missed the warmth of the sunlight. I looked around the forest, only he was now nowhere to be seen, the man was gone. I lifted my nose and breathed in hard, sniffing at the air.
“You don’t need to sniff me out, Beauty, I'm right here” his accented voice spoke. I turned to the sound as he stepped out from behind a tree. I knew it, the man from the mall.
“What are you doing here?” I demanded of him. He smirked at me and stepped forward,
“I wanted to meet you cousin, properly this time” he mused,
“Cousin?”
“You are the descendant of Selena, are you not?” he asked, tilting his head to the side. The way he looked at me made me shiver. Like he was a ravenous lion, and I, his prey. I should flash Gunner, this is a bad idea.
“I am” I answered him. I crossed my arms over my chest, trying and failing to block his view of my overly exposed body. Maybe Gunner was right about this swimsuit.
“And who are you?” I asked.
“I am Alpha Galterio, of Origin Wolf. Descended from Gill, first son born to Lycaon” he said proudly before lowering his eyes and smiling at me wickedly,
“See? We are cousins, distant cousins” he mused.
“You are not my cousin” I said firmly. He chuckled and ran his hand through his slicked back dark hair. He stepped closer and smiled back at me.
“I suppose not, but isn’t it nice to think so. We did come from the same Were, many generations ago, so we share blood all the same” he said smoothly, full of confidence and charisma.
“Why are you here, really? It's not just to meet me, is it?” I said taking a small step backwards,
“Of course it is, we’re family” he almost sung. It was all fake, the smoothness, the joy, he was putting on a show,
“If you’re not going to tell the truth then there is no point continuing this conversation” I snapped and turned to walk away. Quicker than possible, he moved to stand in front of me, blocking my path. My hands fell to my sides and I nearly fell back at the surprise of him just appearing in front of me, like magic.
“How, how did you do that?” I mumbled,
“Do what, Beauty?”
“How did you move so fast?”
“You have your gifts, and I have mine” he said in a smug way that came off rather threatening.
“You have powers?” I asked, fear bubbled in the pit of my stomach, I'm sure he could smell it on me.
“You have been asking all the questions, why not let me ask one?” he smirked and stepped closer to me, now only inches away. His tall and muscular frame was intimidating, the scent of cologne was strong, but above all, he made me feel a little sick. Nervous actually.
“You haven’t answered any of my questions” I said, trying to keep my voice strong and level.
“That’s not fair, you asked who I was, and I told you” he chuckled as he lifted his hand to my face. Just like before, I froze, unable to move or think as the tip of his finger gently slid down my cheek, my neck and between the valley of my breasts. He was staring down at my chest hungrily, I could smell his desire and it made me want to puke. He hesitated for a moment, his hand just hung there between my boobs. Awkward silence filled the space between us, before he pulled his hand away.
“You haven’t called for your Mate?” he questioned as he took a step back. The word ’Mate’ coming from his mouth sounded dirty, disgusting even. The fear in my stomach was making me incapable of speaking, so instead I slowly shook my head.
“Good” he announced,
“That Alpha is very frustrating, always around, never leaving you alone” he growled and turned away. The statement caught me off guard. How would he know something like that, that Gunner and I are always together? Unless he has been watching us. Or… The traitor has been relaying information. My stomach fell and I could feel a lump of vomit form in my throat. Shit. This was a bad idea.
“You trust me, don’t you? That's why you haven't called for him? You can feel safe with me” he said somewhat seductively. I snapped myself out of my little trance and glared at the Alpha in front of me. I lifted my hand and let the power flow through me. My skin burned and hot pins danced across my arm. Little blue sparks sprung from my fingertips before crackling out again.
“I can take care of myself” I told him with warning, he smirked at me before he disappeared in a blur, only to reappear at my back. He slid his arm around my waist and spread his fingers out across the skin of my stomach. His other hand wrapped around my neck, not hard or constricting, but sensual. His hold on me was one of passion. He pressed his nose to the crook of my neck and inhaled deeply.
“So can I" he whispered lowly. His tongue poked out from between his lips and he dragged it up the sensitive skin of my neck. That was the last straw. I flung my arm back, and using my power, sent him flying deeper into the forest. I spun around to watch him land over forty meters away. The furthest I have thrown someone. He jumped to his feet and growled at me with his teeth bared. He took off running into the trees, but I couldn’t see him move, he was too fast. The fastest I have ever seen a Were move. I tried to follow him with my eyes but I lost sight of him almost immediately. He reappeared in front of me with a smile on his face and his hands up in surrender.
“I deserved that, I just wanted to see how you’d respond” he chuckled. I raised my hand, ready to wrap my power around his throat when he stopped me,
“Wait, wait, wait” he rushed out,
“I’m sorry, I just want to talk to you, I promise. No more funny business, hands to myself, I swear” he begged. I hesitated and eyed him carefully. His large brown eyes were pleading with me, his face looked sincere enough. I nodded but kept my hand out at the ready. Alpha Galterio leaned back against a tree and crossed his arms over his chest. He waited for me to do the same, but that wasn’t going to happen. Once he realised that, he started talking,
“I need your help” he told me,
“With what?” I responded,
“With something big, something very important”
“And how could I possibly help?” I sneered.
“You are the Triple Goddess, favourite daughter of the mighty Moon Goddess. The whole Were world knows about your arrival by now. That in itself is enough”
“So, you want me for my power and my status, not because you need my help” I said accusingly,
“No Beauty, you are the one we have been waiting for, you are the one we need. Without you, I'm afraid our cause is lost”
“And what cause is that?” I asked, my curiosity rising,
“To bring freedom to all of Were-kind".
