The Moon's Descendant - Chapter 72 - Crescent Wolf

Gunner.

Cole’s voice in my head interrupted my romp with Zelena.
***Gunner you need to get back down here now***
I growled internally and jumped up off the bed,
“Come on little wolf, enough play time, we have a fight to get ready for” I grinned at her. She huffed and threw her body back onto the bed. Oh my little wolf, I feel your frustration believe me. I gently kissed her cheek and whispered in her ear,
“Don’t wash off either, I want to smell you like this for the rest of the day”
With that I quickly ran out the bedroom door before I lost my self-control and started up again. I got to the foyer and Tobias and Cole were waiting for me, as was another man. Tobias sniffed at the air and smirked at me. Is this guy fucking serious with me right now?
“Gunner this is Patrick, he has come from Crescent Wolf” Cole said gesturing to the new man. He put his hand on his chest and bowed his head.
“Alpha Gunner, it is my absolute honour to meet you” he said before standing up straight again.
“Are you a commander?” I asked, expecting that he is here to answer our call for support.
“No Alpha, unfortunately I bring no aid” Patrick answered,
“Why are you here then?” I grunted, annoyance growing in me.
“Gunner, Crescent Wolf were attacked by hunters” Cole answered for him.
“What?” I huffed.
“My Alpha sent me to you as the fighting broke out. We were caught unprepared and it was a slaughter, more than half the packed killed in the first two minutes” his sadness was evident in his voice. I felt for him, I really did. But I couldn’t get my mind past the fact that the hunters are closer than we thought.
“Survivors?” I asked urgently.
“I am not so sure, Alpha, I intercepted your scouts on my way here. They said to continue on to you and they would check back on the pack”
“Thank you, my friend, a moment please” I said softly as I closed my eyes to connect with Smith.
***Smith, Smith are you there?***
***I’m here Gunner***
***Report***
***Crescent Wolf has been destroyed, we found a small pack of survivors***
***Alpha Titus, did he survive?***
***Still unknown, his Luna and children are with the survivors. They are headed to safe houses now***
***How many?***
***There are sixty-two survivors with the Luna, there could be more spread around.***
Only sixty-two survivors. Crescent Wolf was a large and powerful pack, if they could be diminished to this magnitude, we may be in for a bigger fight than I was expecting. Cole was relaying the flashed conversation to the others as we spoke.
***I need you back here right away, we will send aid to them once the fight is done***
***Already headed back, twelve fighters are joining us***
***Good man, I’ll see you soon.***
I turned to look at Patrick, he looked defeated and pale. I placed my hand on his shoulder and he sniffed, clearing his throat and standing up straight.
“I will fight with you” he announced with a nod of his head.
“You don’t have to do that” I assured him. He paused for a moment before answering
“No, I do, for my pack” he said strongly.
Zelena made her way down the stairs and coming to stand by my side.
“What’s going on?” she asked nervously. This will hit her hard, I’m sure if it.
“Smith is headed back, he reached the Crescent Wolf pack” Cole told her,
“And? Are they coming too?” She questioned. We all looked at each other awkwardly, none of them wanted to be the one to break the news to her.
“Not exactly” I croaked,
“Hello Luna, I’m Patrick, I've come from Crescent Wolf” said Patrick piping up.
“Hello sir” she said softly. We all stood quietly for a moment until Zee broke the silence,
“What?” she snapped looking around at us.
“Crescent Wolf were attacked, Patrick here came to ask for aid” Tobias finally spoke. He could have said it a little more gently, this will devastate her. I growled at him softly.
“Was it the hunters?” she asked,
“Yes Miss, we suffered a lot of casualties. Most of our fighters are gone, the ones that are left are leading the remaining pack to safe houses” Patrick said, his voice shaking slightly.
“Bring them here, we’ll help them” she said with her voice breaking,
“We can help, we have to help them. Oh god this is all my fault. Gunner please bring them here”
Tears were pooling in her eyes and her whole body was shaking. She then begun to fall to the ground, Tobias caught her before she hit the floor.
“Zelena” I cried out as I slumped down on the floor above her head. I placed my hands on either side of her cheeks and was sucked into darkness. I could see dead bodies everywhere. The little white houses indicated that I was looking at the Crescent Wolf village. How is this happening? The amount of blood all over the ground was daunting. There’s a pile of pups laid on top of each other, all dead. There are wolves and human pieces spread out across the open field. In a quick flash I was now looking down at men and women dressed in black, carrying semi-automatic assault rifles and high-powered crossbows. I tried to count how many hunters I could see but I was pushed back into the darkness.
With a deep breath I was back in the foyer, sitting on the floor. I looked down at Zee, she was also awake again. That can’t be possible, surely not. I recalled what Zelena told me that day we went running in the forest. Drakos-Mati is just a story, she couldn’t really have the eye. But then again everyone thought the Triple Goddess was a myth, look how that turned out. This girl will never stop surprising me.
“Zelena, are you ok?” I asked breathlessly.
“I saw them, Gunner” she cried, tears pouring from her scared golden eyes.
“I saw the Crescent Wolf pack, all dead” she sobbed loudly. I pulled her up onto my lap and pulled her face into my chest. Wrapping my arms around her shaking frame, I tried to calm her down again.
“I know little wolf, I saw it too” I said softly as I brushed my hand through her hair.

“We have this section of forest secure, the tree cover will give our fighters a boost. We have blocked any path here and here. This section of the forest was near on inaccessible, we have downed a few trees to make sure that nothing can get through” Rex my eldest commander was pointing out the parts of the forest on the map.
“I have traps set here and here for any incoming vehicles. More traps are set along this section of the border. The exterior of the pack house is secure and the village has been rigged here, here, here and here” Felix pointed out the cabins in the village.
“I want Zelena to stay in the village during the battle, it’s at the centre of our territory and it should be the safest place” I said looking to Felix, internally questioning his trap placement.
“As long as she stays in this vicinity and doesn’t go near this cabin or this one, then she will be fine. This is definitely the most secure position for her” Felix confirmed.
“Excellent. Thank you brothers, you have done brilliantly. Please return to your posts” I stood and offered my hand to both of my commanders. Rex took it first and bowed his head as he did. Felix next and he placed his other hand to his chest.
“Thank you Alpha” he said as they turned to leave the hall.
***Zelena I need you to come to the hall please***
***Is everything okay?***
***Yes, I just need to go over a few things with you***
***Okay I’m on my way***
A few minutes later Zee walked through the door and came straight to my arms. She wrapped her arms around my waist and hugged me tight.
“What do you need to show me?” she asked looking up at me. I look her hand and lead her to the table.
“When the fighting begins you are to stay here, in the village” I said pointing at the map,
“But Gunner…” she was about to protest.
“Just listen” I stopped her. She nodded her head and I continued.
“Felix has traps sent up at these positions, it is vital that you stay away from these cabins. I will be fighting in this area and Smith and Cole will be here and here. Tobias has sworn to stay by your side, he will have four of his men with him. I know how badly you want to help, but the best thing that you can do is stay here and not get killed” I looked over her face, although I could tell she wanted to argue, she didn’t.
“Okay” she said nodding her head.
“Okay?” I repeated
“Yes, Gunner okay, I will stay in the village”
“Well okay then. Take this map and study it, you need to be one hundred percent aware of the traps around you. I will show Tobias and he can inform his pack fighters” I rolled up the map and passed it to her. She looked uncertain, she was trying to hide it but I’ve come to know her facial expressions pretty well. I stepped forward and placed my hands on her shoulders.
“Zee you don’t have to do this, it’s okay if you want to back out. No one expects you to fight”.
She was quiet for a minute, taking in my words.
“It’s not that, I want to fight, I’m ready for it. I’m just so scared for our pack, and for you. So many people are putting themselves in harm’s way because of me. I don’t like it and I don’t want them to get hurt” her eyes welled with tears as she spoke.
“Zee, this isn’t just about you. Hunters have been killing Were-kind for hundreds of years, they have plagued our kind since the first wolf. They aren’t just fighting because you are a Luna, but because you are their Goddess. You may not understand because you weren’t raised as a Were. The Moon Goddess gave us life, she gives us hope. And the line of the Triple Goddess is her continued gift to Were-kind. Any wolf would give their life for the Goddess and her chosen daughter, regardless of who she was. So, you see you are a beacon of hope for all Weres. You are worth protecting and I’m not the only one that thinks so.” Tears were flowing freely down her cheeks now and her aura had changed, she was exuding pride.
“Do you understand now?” I asked smiling down at her beautiful face. She sniffed and smiled and nodded her head. I pulled her into my chest and held her tight, breathing in her scent.
“Okay, now go and study that map. I have a few more things to do” I said as I pulled her out of my arms.
“I love you Gunner” she said smiling up at me. I grabbed her cheeks and placed a kiss on her lips.
“I love you too” I whispered.
