Twin Moon - Chapter 238 - The Whole Truth

Zelena.

“Yes, you are in the picture. So is your sister” Lunaya said as she looked up to meet my gaze. What? I furrowed my brows and shook my head.
“I'm sorry. What?” I blurted blankly.
“The reason that I know you can’t break a prophecy, the reason your dad became so protective, it’s because we’ve already tried it. And we failed” she answered,
“I’m not following”
“Zelena, baby, you had a sister. A twin sister” she said with more firmness. I could hear the words just fine. I couldn’t quite grip onto them though. They just weren’t computing. This can’t be true. I have a sister, a twin sister. What does that all mean? Is the prophecy not about my babies, is it actually about me?
“That’s not funny” I sneered,
“I’m not telling any jokes” Lunaya snipped back,
“You had twins too?”
“I did”
“I have a sister?” I said slowly. My mind began to wonder, and I could see her, clear as day. I could see the future we could have had together. Growing up side by side, playing together, learning together. She would have been my best friend, and I hers. I could picture her face too, it is just like mine. We would have played pranks on the other pack members, switching places and laughing hysterically when we got found out. We would have made so many wonderful memories together as we experienced the world, together, as sisters.
“No darling, you ‘had’ a sister” Lunaya said, cutting off my daydream
“Huh?” I blanked,
“She’s dead Zelena, she died during the attack on Moon Light” Lunaya said sadly. Only I wasn’t sad at her words. No, I was angry.
“How can you be so sure? You thought that I died too” I snapped at her. With the rise of my voice came a dull creaking sound from the bookshelves. Lunaya was quiet, staring at me wide eyed and a little afraid.
“How do you know for sure!” I screamed and jumped to my feet, but she still didn’t answer.
“Did you see her body? Did you see her die? Tell me!” I yelled. My legs grew heavy, and I could feel the weightlessness fill my head. The books on the shelves started to shake, and the coffee table bobbled slightly on the ground. My emotions were all over the place and my control over my power was weaning. I steadied my feet and closed my eyes, then took a few deep breaths and pulled the power back in. The heaviness evaporated and the airy feeling left. I looked down at Lunaya and she had fresh tears falling from her eyes. I felt bad for yelling at her. It was her daughter too, not just my sister. I imagine it hurts her a lot more than it does me. But this is kind of an atomic bomb drop of information.
“I’m sorry” I said sincerely and sat back down in my chair.
“Lunaya, did you see her die?” I asked with a gentler tone. She shook her head and wiped the tears from her eyes.
“So, it is possible then. She could still be alive” I said with a nod of my head. My heart was beating so fast it was almost like a hummingbird. I could hear the blood pumping around my ears. My excitement was palpable. She could still be alive. The story that Lunaya told me, that first day I spoke to her, like really spoke to her, she said something that I didn’t understand at the time.
“When you first told me about my father, about the attack on Moon Light, you said that you and he split up” I said slowly. The story was making more sense now, the pieces were fitting together.
“I did tell you that” Lunaya confirm cautiously. I think she also knows where this is going.
“That part never made sense to me. I didn’t question it before, maybe I should have, but I think I get it now” I said and turned to look at her more closely.
“You split up, to split us up. Me and my sister. Right?” I asked and lowered myself onto the couch opposite of where she was sitting.
“Yes” she nodded in confirmation,
“Why would you do that? Why wouldn’t you stay together, wouldn’t it have been safer that way?”
“It was clear from the start of the attack that the hunters were looking for us specifically, but we didn’t know for sure if they knew there were two of you. We couldn’t risk them finding out and getting their hands on the both of you” she confessed.
“But you said that you never found Dad’s body, and you never saw my sister die. So maybe they got away” I said hopefully. She was quiet for a moment then a soft weeping came from her.
“You called him Dad” Lunaya sobbed.
“Well, he is my Dad”
“I know, I just, I haven’t heard you say that before”
“Don’t change the topic. They could both be alive, right?”
“No honey, I don’t think so”
“Why not”
“Because he never came to the meeting place”
“Maybe he was hurt and couldn't get there”
“Your father would have never quit. He could have lost both his legs and he would still drag his body there”
“You quit” I whispered and stood back up.
“Zelena” Lunaya called,
“Sorry, that wasn’t fair, we’ve already talked about that. I thought I was over it, I guess I'm not” I said as I started pacing again.
“It’s okay to be upset”
“I’m not upset, but I'm not ready to give up yet”
“Sweetheart, I searched. I scoured the world looking for traces of your father and you girls. I found nothing. After years of endless searching, countless compounds, and zero signs, only then did I give up hope”
“Yeah, well, I have only just been told I have a sister. I understand you did your time looking, but now I have to try for myself”
“And what of the prophecy. I thought you were going to try and stop that first?”
“Shit, right. First, I’ll end the prophecy, and then I'll find my sister. Wait” I said and turned back to face her,
“What’s her name?” I asked. Lunaya’s face softened and a sad smile spread across her lips.
“Aurora. Her name was Aurora” she said softly.
“Aurora” I said quietly, letting the name roll through my mouth. My sister, Aurora. Zelena and Aurora. Twins. A and Z, the beginning and the end. I like it.
“It’s pretty” I said quietly, looking over at Lunaya, as I sat down again.
“I picked her name, it means ‘The Dawn’. Your father chose yours, ‘The Moon’. The two of you were our lights in the dark. The Moon and The Dawn” she said while reminiscing. I could see her mind had gone back there, reliving the memories once again.
“Fitting” I said with a huff,
“We thought so” Lunaya nodded.
“So, which one of us is meant to bring life and which one is death?” I asked sourly.
“Zelena” Lunaya scolded,
“Oh right, sorry. It's my babies that will bring life and death. Silly me” I said sarcastically.
“That’s enough!” she snapped and stood up. She glared down at me angrily, the angriest I have ever seen her before. I can see why some of the other pack members find her intimidating. I leaned back into the chair and looked up at her warily.
“I didn’t create the prophecy. Your father and I did everything we could to end it. I thought it ended when I thought you all died. I understand that you’re angry, I was angry too. But don't throw that bullshit at me, I won’t stand for it” she growled harshly. Holy shit. Did I just get scolded by my mother like a petulant child? I sank further back into the chair and nodded my head meekly.
“I’m sorry” I squeaked out. She breathed out a few deep breaths and sat back down again.
“I’m sorry I yelled at you, that wasn't my intention. But please understand this is a big deal for me too. I know I haven’t handled the news of your twins very well, and I absolutely should have told you about Aurora and the true meaning of the prophecy right away. But I'm... I’m scared Zelena”.
I watched her face as she sat quietly. This whole time she has been here, and I've been watching her. Then also after I let her get close, and started getting to know her. The whole time I have never felt much of a parental connection to her. I always felt like there was this wall between us, keeping us apart. But now, I see her. I really see her. I can see her maternal instincts shining strongly, the need to protect and shelter. And also, in her eyes and the sharp corners of her tensed mouth, I can see the kind of fear that only a parent could understand. I can feel her maternal love, I can see her motherly desire to keep me safe. How could I have been so blind to it this whole time.
I slowly stood up and walked over to where she sat. She looked up at me curiously and wiped a tear from her cheek. I lifted her hand from her lap and carefully sat myself down on her legs. Her body was tense and unsure. As I curled myself into her lap, pressing my face into her chest, her body relaxed and she wrapped her arms around me.
“I’m scared too, Mum” I whispered. She whimpered and squeezed me tightly, rocking me back and forth.
“I love you, my baby girl. I always have” she sobbed into my hair. Her happiness, her sorrow, her relief and her grief, it all swarmed around me. I could feel every bit of it. I could feel the sadness she has lived with all these years. I could feel her happiness at finding me alive. I could feel her grief at losing her children and her Mate. And her relief that I was finally accepting her as my mother. I could feel all of her emotions like they were my own. I understand her now.
“I love you too, Mum” I said as my own tears fell from my eyes. She held me tightly in her arms, as if I were still the small baby that she held so many years ago. I like being in her arms, I like feeling her love. I like having her here with me. I don’t know how long we sat like that. It could have been minutes, it could have been hours. Either way, it was long overdue.
“You will help me save them, won’t you? The both of them?” I asked her after a while. She brushed her fingers through my hair and sighed.
“It was never a question. I will do everything I possibly can to help you protect them. We won’t let anything happen to either of them, Zelena. I promise you” she said firmly.
“Where do we start?” I asked, sitting up from her chest. Lunaya stroked her fingers across my cheek and smiled softly.
“We start with me telling you everything I know about this prophecy” she said with a nod. She tapped my knees and I stood up.
“And that includes telling your family” she said standing up and taking my hands.
“No, we can’t. Not yet” I argued,
“My darling, the more eyes we have searching books, and the more minds we have trying to solve this, the better it will be for the twins. I know you’re scared. But they are your family, your pack, you have to know that they too will do anything to help the babies” she said with certainty.
“I know, it’s just...”
“It’s nothing” Lunaya cut me off,
“You have to tell them. They will help you” she argued. She's right, I know she’s right. It's a hard pill to swallow though. I wish Gunner were here, he'd know what to do.
