Twin Moon - Chapter 244 - Ditto
Aurora.
I tightened my grip on Gunner’s side, digging my fingernails into his flesh. Gunner stared at Doyle, and Doyle stared back at Gunner. I looked around us, we were still surrounded. At a quick glance, I counted nine, ten including the Alpha. Should be easy to take them. I've taken down more than this on my own before. But Gunner doesn’t seem like the type to get scared at just anyone. He called these ones mercenaries. I've never heard of Werewolf mercenaries. I wonder if the hunters knew about them. Probably not, or else they would have extinguished them by now. Human mercenaries earn their reputation, similar to that of a hunter clan. I can only assume that wolf mercenaries work the same way. And by the look of Gunner, this pack has built themselves one hell of a reputation.
“So, mighty Alpha, you have heard of me. I guess my reputation speaks as loud as yours does. Or should I say, as loud as your Mate’s” Doyle sneered and turned his glare on me. Why does he think I'm Gunner’s Mate, what would have given him that impression.
“We’ve all heard the stories about you, tiny Goddess” Doyle teased.
What stories? How does he even know who I am? I have always been careful to keep my identity a secret. There is no way he could know who I am. Also, did he just call me ‘Tiny Goddess’? Eww. But wait, he thinks I'm Gunner’s Mate. That must be the Zee person he has mentioned. Gunner refuses to talk about her, so I don’t know what she could have done that was special enough to have stories told about her. With all the mystery, and now the new interest from this Alpha, I am well past the point of curious. Once we kill these morons and get out of this forest, Gunner and I are going to need to have a real conversation. But for now, he thinks I am Gunner’s Mate, so I guess I can play along.
“Then you should know not to fuck with me” I sneered at Doyle. He glared back at me with his top lip curled back into a snarl. I was ready for his attack, my feet were light and ready to move. My claws were pressing against the tips of my fingers, my gums tingled with the need for my canines to extend. Gunner’s body vibrated with a deep growl, he too was ready for the fight. A roar of laughter burst from Doyle’s mouth. He threw his head back and laughed into the sky.
“Didn’t I say it, she is feisty. No she-wolf kills that many hunters without a bucket load of fire in her belly” Doyle cackled wildly. Hunters, Gunner’s Mate killed a lot of hunters? So she’s some kind of super warrior then. I’m starting to respect and hate this mystery woman. Gunner squeezed my shoulder, another growl bubbled out of his mouth.
“Yes, tiny Goddess. I know all too well not to fuck with you” Doyle teased,
“Then what is this show for? Why try and keep us here, why lay hands on her, and why spout your ‘blood pays with blood’ nonsense?” Gunner growled. Doyle’s amused expression dropped, and his laughter was gone. He glared at Gunner and stepped forward.
“Blood pays with blood, is our way. Do not disrespect our traditions. I don’t care who you are, disrespect me and you will regret it” Doyle warned venomously.
“I meant no disrespect Alpha Doyle, but you threatened my Mate” Gunner grunted back. I nearly choked on my own tongue. Did he just call me his Mate. I heard that, right? I looked up to his face as he stared blankly at Doyle. Not a flinch, blink, delayed breath, nothing. His position was firm and strong, either he is a brilliant poker player, or he means it. No, no. Saxton explained how Mating works, and neither of us have drank the other's blood. He’s just playing along, he must be.
“I made no threat, not to her. I was just curious” he snickered,
“Curious about what exactly?” I snapped,
“About you of course” he fired back,
“What about me?” I asked. If I can’t get Gunner to talk, maybe I can manipulate Doyle into telling me about this Zee woman.
“Stop” Gunner hissed out of the corner of his mouth and pinched my arm.
“I just wanted to know if you really are the badass that the stories claim you are, or if it was just that, a story”
“And your conclusion?” I asked without hesitation. Doyle laughed again and smiled wickedly at me.
“You are a fearless little thing, aren’t you” he chuckled,
“That wasn’t an answer” I snipped. Doyle stopped his chuckling and stared at me.
“Careful she-wolf. Or else I will be forced to test the full extent of your abilities” Doyle growled his warning. Gunner and I both growled back. He is threatening me. Mutts that threaten me don’t usually fare too well.
“Try me” I snarled and flashed my teeth. I went to step toward him, fully prepared and itching to watch the life drain out of his cocky face and dark eyes. But Gunner’s grip on my arm pulled me back, smacking my back against his chest. He wrapped his arms around my body, holding me in front of him. As much as there were other things to worry about, the fact that his naked and muscular body was pressed completely up against me, didn’t go unnoticed.
“Oh, I have no doubt that you would put up one hell of a fight” Doyle scoffed,
“But we have a more pressing matter to attend to” he said with a sly smile. I don’t like this dog. He seems off.
“Are you afraid?” I teased with a chuckle. I don’t know what possessed me to bait him. I guess I'm just used to playing with these dumb animals. He didn’t seem to appreciate it though. Doyle roared. He didn’t just let his canines extend, but his whole face began morphing into a wolf. His nose extended forward as his teeth grew, his eyebrows increased in size and spread across to his ears, which had grown into furry points.
“I fear nothing” he growled in a deep and rumbling animalistic voice. I had no reaction. I just stared at his disfigured face. Gunner growled and pulled me back away from Doyle. The rest of the people around us were all silently watching. I smirked at the furious Alpha, again probably not the best idea. But I found the whole situation hilarious. This idiot thinks he could actually beat me. Maybe he could beat the girl that he thinks I am, Zee. But the mongrel has zero chance against me, the real me, the incarnation of death. His face slowly returned to its normal state, then he glowered at me.
“Remember this, tiny Goddess. Remember that I let you walk out of here unscathed. The next time we cross paths, you may not be so lucky” Doyle rumbled.
“Ditto” I snapped back. Doyle curled his lips back over his teeth and snarled. He lifted his hand and snapped his fingers, then they were all gone. I watched as they retreated into the trees, leaving Gunner and I alone, his naked body still holding me to him. I could feel his heart thundering in his chest, his heated skin was warm against mine. I leaned back into him, pushing out my backside like a horny cat. Gunner hissed and pushed me away. I whirled around and frowned at him.
“What the fuck is wrong with you?” he snapped harshly. I didn’t answer, just stared at him wide eyed. What's ruffled his feathers?
“Excuse me?” I asked annoyed,
“Do you have any fucking clue who they were?” he yelled stepping toward me and pointing in the direction that Doyle has run off in.
“No. Should I?” I asked dumbly. Gunner seemed to have dropped his anger and stood up straight. He tipped his head to the side and quirked his eyebrow.
“Wait, really?” he asked with a gentler tone,
“Really. I don’t know who that was, why would I?” I replied annoyed,
“Oh” Gunner said stunned.
