Twin Moon - Chapter 291 - I Want To Hurt You
Whiskey.
I only got a few yards when the next person spotted me. It was a woman with a small child in her arms. At first, she smiled and lifted her arm to wave. I suppose that is when she saw the feral look on my face, and perhaps the bloodied pipe and hatchet in my hands. Her smile dropped immediately, and she clutched the child to her chest tighter.
“Goddess?” she called fearfully. The chuckle burst from my lips before I could contain it. She turned to run, and I wasted no time in throwing the hatchet into her back as she retreated. Her pained scream broke through the cold silent air as she dropped to the ground. The child wailed loudly as they both hit the dirt. I jogged forward and reefed the small axe from her back. The child squirmed and screamed from under its mother's arm that had it pinned down. I grinned and lifted the axe above my head, ready to bring it down severing the child's head. As I swung the hatchet down, I was slammed in the stomach and sent flying backward. I landed hard on my lower back, but quickly rolled and recovered into a fighting position. A large tan-coloured wolf stood over the body of the woman, seemingly protecting the still living child. I gripped the hatchet tighter and stood up. The wolf was large, not an Alpha, but still one of the bigger wolves I have fought. Though something was different about this beast. It looked normal, almost like it was an actual wolf, not just a Were. That's if wolves grew to that size. But they don’t, that’s impossible. I smirked and subtly shifted my grip on the pole.
“Ready to die?” I sneered at the wolf. It growled and lifted its head to the sky, a loud howl filled the air. Fucking coward, it's calling for backup. I threw my arm forward, letting fly the pole I was holding. It swiftly cut the air and hit the hip of the dog. Its howl died in an instant and it jumped back, dislodging the pole from its leg. I didn’t wait for the wolf to ready itself, and instead, I charged toward it with the hatchet primed and ready to slice it open. I swung out for its throat as I reached it, but it was faster than I gave it credit for. The wolf jumped back while lifting the top half of its body at the same time, meaning the hatchet only just connected with its chest. Enough to cut through the skin, but not deep enough to debilitate it. As I was running full pelt, I couldn’t stop before colliding with the stinky beast, so I drop my shoulder and rammed myself into its upper chest as we collided. It was enough to flip the beast off balance, the force made it fall backwards and landed on its side. I spun on my toes and jumped forward, landing on top of the dog. With the hatchet coming in a downward motion, I caught the look of realisation in the mutt’s eyes. It knew it didn’t have the time to stop me, it knew it was going to die today. It shifted its body right at the last second, meaning the blade of the axe was imbedded into its shoulder and not its head where I was aiming for.
The wolf let out another howl, only this time it was from pain. I tried to pull the axe from its shoulder, but it must have lodged into the bone and was stuck. It squirmed underneath me, growling and whimpering, and I continued to yank at the handle of the hatchet to no avail. I stood up and wedged my foot into the dog's neck to give myself better leverage. As I pulled the hatchet free, blood spurted from the gaping wound, splattering across my face and upper body. The dog howled again before its head lolled to the side. It laid unmoving but still panting hard. I guess I nicked an artery or something. I went to step off the beast but was halted when two massive arms came around my body, trapping my arms at my sides. Calmness swept over me as gentle sparks danced across my skin. I breathed in deeply, taking in the scent of Tobias, the gargantuan brown man. I growled lowly and pushed on his arms, to get him to let me go.
“Calm now, little warrior” he whispered into the crook of my neck.
“Let. Me. Go!” I snarled out each word clearly and harshly. His arms didn’t budge, if anything he tightened them. I felt the firm ridges of his chest and abdomen muscles press at my shoulders. His heavy breaths blew into my hair, making the stray strands dance. His scent was calming but infuriating at the same time. How can a stranger have such strong effects on my body? I know that he feels some sort of way about me. But that feeling is not mutual.
I slammed my head back, hoping to connect with his nose, but the bastard was too big. The back of my head hit his chest, while just the top of my head nicked his chin. It did nothing to put him off, and if anything, only served to annoy him.
“Enough Aurora” Tobias hissed.
Hearing that stupid fucking name fuelled the fire in my chest. I felt my skin run cold as my heart rate increased. I looked down at my chest to see the whisps of black smoke starting to spiral out from under my shirt. The power dripping through my blood was delicious. The icy coldness prickling across my skin was everything I knew that I remembered and enjoyed. I've not always liked the cold. When I was a child, it was either like it or let it kill me. I chose to embrace it. Now it empowers me. The cool black smoke was the epitome of my cold blood and blackened heart. Is there any wonder it came to me, this power. It chose me because it is me. We are one and the same.
The smoke spread across my skin, down my arms, around my fingers, and up my neck. Tobias gasped from behind me when the smoke curled around his biceps. His body tensed and a low growl rumbled through his chest.
“Stop this” he demanded. I smirked as I caught the tone in his voice. He was a little worried. Good. He should be. I closed my eyes and leaned my head back against his chest, concentrating, as I felt the power flowing through my body. I focused on the coldness of it, the lightness and the gentle way it skimmed across my skin. I pulled it into me, letting it fill every corner and crevasse. The magic bubbled inside me, pushing and pulling to be let go. And so I did, I let it go. I opened my eyes and let the power fly out of me on a scream. A wave of pressure burst forth, shaking the cabins and violently rustling the trees. It was enough to knock Tobias off his feet. I took advantage of his unsteadiness and wriggled free of his grip. I turned on my heel and watched him slide along the dirt before coming to a stop. He frowned over at me and raised his hands in surrender. I'm a little disappointed, I thought a man of his size would have a little more fight in him.
“Please Aurora, it doesn’t have to be this way” Tobias said with a tinge of sadness to his voice. I didn’t reply, I just dropped my shoulders and tilted my head to the side.
“Please, put it down and come back inside” he said softly and extended his hand out to me.
“I can’t do that” I growled back quietly.
“You can, this can end. Right here, right now” he said with the utmost sincerity. I almost believed him. Almost. A group of men and women ran towards us from both sides, all of them ready to leap into the fight without question. Tobias waved them down and they paused. I snarled and whipped my head back and forth to take in both groups. Nine in total. Easy enough to take out. I lifted my hand to the group on the left and pushed it out. A gust of wind flew forward, knocking the five of them off their feet and sending them soaring through the air and a good twenty meters away.
“Aurora, stop!” Tobias shouted. His loud voice echoed through the village.
“Leave me alone!” I screamed back at him.
“Please. We don’t want to hurt you” he pleaded. I sneered at him and fixed my grip on the handle of the hatchet.
“No” I hissed venomously,
“But I want to hurt you” I yelled as I let the hatchet fly from my hand. My plan worked. I distracted him with my words, just long enough for him to not see the axe coming. It lodged into his chest, just off the centre. His feet staggered and he dropped to one knee. Both of his hands wrapped around the blade of the axe as he looked up at me. His face was a blank mask, but his eyes were dripping with sadness. I flashed my fangs and growled. Tobias sent me a half smile before dropping back down into the dirt.
