Chapter 11 The First Income
Sadie tossed and turned in bed, unable to fall asleep. On her fifteenth trip to the bathroom, making one last attempt to get some rest, she finally couldn't resist the urge to pick up her phone. She dialed Micah's number.
"Why haven't you replied to my messages?" Sadie complained.
"I was busy," Micah replied casually.
"Did you get some business? How much did you make?" Sadie asked excitedly.
"Five thousand dollars!" Micah raised an eyebrow and threw out a random number.
Andrew stood beside Micah, hands clasped tightly, straining to pick up every word of the conversation. Micah looked calm, almost detached, but Andrew was far from composed. Was Micah discussing business? Five thousand dollars wouldn't cover much, let alone a deposit. Did Micah really need to handle this himself?
Or maybe...
A sudden revelation hit Andrew like a bolt of lightning. This had to be code! Micah was sealing a secret deal, something he couldn't afford to let outsiders in on. Andrew's heart sank. He pondered, 'Have I fallen from Micah's inner circle? No way. I can't let this slide. I'll work harder to prove my loyalty and regain Micah's trust.'
No one knew about Andrew's inner turmoil.
Micah smiled. Standing at the pinnacle of his business empire, he found everything rather dull. But now, this naive woman, Sadie, was adding some amusement to his otherwise monotonous life.
Sadie, on the other hand, was much simpler; she was just worried that Micah might renege on his promise.
"Great, transfer me twenty-five hundred dollars first!" Sadie said excitedly, feeling secure only when the money was in her pocket.
"We'll talk in the morning." With that, Micah hung up.
The busy tone on the phone made Sadie a bit angry. This debtor was quite arrogant.
But since he said he'd transfer the money in the morning, she decided to trust him this once. Maybe the money would be there when she woke up.
At six in the morning, just as Sadie had fallen asleep, her phone buzzed with a message. She quickly grabbed it from under her pillow and saw that twenty-five hundred dollars had been deposited.
Sadie finally had her first income, which enabled her to buy some necessities for the kids. Brenda and she had just returned from the countryside and were lacking many things, making life quite inconvenient. But with no money in her pocket, Sadie had to wait for her salaries.
Unexpectedly, the compensation had arrived before the salary. Sadie decided to take Brenda and the kids to the mall to buy some things.
Over the years, Sadie had gotten used to her fallen status. She always compared prices before buying anything. She knew where to find good quality at low prices and which stores had sales.
For instance, today, there was a small brand of children's clothing on sale on the third floor of Ruby Plaza. She could check it out.
At the Ruby Plaza, Sadie first took Brenda and the kids to the children's play area, bought three tickets, gave some instructions at the entrance, and then left with peace of mind. She wore clothes she had bought years ago, a fanny pack for convenience, and tied up her hair, ready for shopping.
"Noah, Nathan, Mia, I'm going to buy some things. You stay with Brenda in the play area and don't run around. I'll come get you when I'm done, okay?" Sadie told the kids.
"Okay!" the three kids answered in unison.
Their voices were loud but not annoying, and their adorable appearance attracted the attention of many passersby. A few young women passing by almost squealed with delight.
"So cute!" one woman praised.
"Yeah, with their curly hair and big eyes, they look like princes and princesses from a fairy tale. I've never seen such beautiful children," another woman chimed in.
"And there are three of them! Their parents are so lucky!" one young woman sighed.
"No, wait, there are four! The little girl has a small parrot on her shoulder! Even the parrot is cute. Is it sleeping?" one woman exclaimed.
Sadie couldn't help but sigh. The three kids had an uncanny knack for becoming the center of attention wherever they went. Perhaps they inherited this trait from their father, who worked as a male escort.
