Chapter 1576 Knot in the Heart
"Emma, Donna, I'm looking for your mommy too, but it might take some time," Sadie said gently, not wanting to lie to the kids.
"But I think your mommy misses you too. Maybe she'll come find you soon."
"Really?" Emma asked excitedly, her little face lighting up. "Mommy will really come find us?"
"Yes, she will," Sadie reassured, patting Emma's head. "Emma, Donna, have you had breakfast yet? How about joining me for breakfast?"
"We want to eat with Mia," Donna said, her mood turning somber. "You should check on Mia. She hasn't been talking or smiling since she got back."
"Is Mia awake?" Sadie asked the maid standing behind them.
"She just woke up, Ms. James," the maid replied.
"I'll go see her," Sadie said, taking Emma and Donna by the hand.
She turned to Annika, who was getting up. "You don't need to worry. Finish your breakfast and then get some rest."
"Ms. James, what about you?"
"I'll be back soon."
Sadie went to Mia's room and found her awake, sitting on the couch with her knees hugged to her chest, staring out at the sun with a deeply troubled expression.
"Mia!" Sadie rushed over and hugged her tightly, wanting to comfort her but unsure of what to say.
"Mommy," Mia said, leaning into her embrace, her voice filled with confusion. "Are there really monsters in this world?"
"What?" Sadie felt a chill run through her. "What kind of monsters?"
"I saw someone who looked exactly like Daddy," Mia said, her eyes filling with fear as she began to tremble. "That person shot at Andrew and then at me and Dad. It was so scary."
"Don't be afraid, Mia," Sadie said, holding her tightly and gently stroking her hair. "Mommy's here. I won't let anyone hurt you."
"Why did that person look just like Daddy?" Mia asked, panic in her voice. "Is he a monster? Like in the cartoons, the ones that can turn into people and then..."
"Mia, that person is a bad guy. The police will catch him and make sure he faces justice," Sadie reassured her. "You have to believe that your daddy loves you and would never hurt you."
"Mommy," Mia sobbed, clinging to Sadie, her body shaking. "That bad guy tried to kill me. Daddy fought him off and told me to run. He got hurt saving me."
"Your daddy will be okay. He's getting treatment and will be home soon."
Sadie finally understood Mia's fear.
It wasn't that she thought her dad wanted to hurt her; she was terrified because she believed he got hurt saving her.
She was struggling to face that reality.
"Really?" Mia asked, her voice filled with hope. "Mommy, you're not lying to me, right?"
"Why would I lie to you?" Sadie said softly, caressing her face. "Trust me, once your daddy gets better, he'll come home."
Mia nodded eagerly, and the light returned to her eyes.
Sadie made a mental note to visit Half Mountain Villa that night to confirm if Riley was there with Micah for treatment.
She needed to be sure he was okay to put her mind at ease.
After comforting Mia, Sadie was about to head back to her room to rest when she felt a small hand tugging at her sleeve.
She turned to see Donna.
Sadie knelt down and smiled at Donna. "Donna, do you have something to tell me?"
"Aunt Sadie," Donna whispered, glancing around before leaning in close. "I can find Mommy. If we find her, we can save Mary and Mia."
