Chapter 31 Twenty Thousand Dollars
Sadie stood outside the conference room, her heart a tangled mess of emotions. Her eyes were locked on Ronan's retreating figure as if he were her last lifeline. Yet, his indifference felt like a dagger to her heart, slicing through her defenses. Her hands trembled slightly, and memories of their sweet times flooded her mind—laughter, hugs, promises—that felt so vivid, yet now seemed so painfully out of reach.
"Does he really not recognize me?" she muttered under her breath, her voice barely audible. The anguish was ripping her apart, leaving a void she couldn't fill.
"Sadie?" Andrew's voice cut through her thoughts, tinged with impatience.
"I'm going to deliver the food now." She forced herself to regain composure, clutching the takeout boxes while feeling as overcast as a stormy sky. Entering the conference room, she saw Micah engrossed in a pile of documents, his brow tightly knit. She placed the breakfast on the table, hoping for any sign of recognition or approval.
"This is the breakfast you bought?" Micah glanced up, his eyes as sharp as blades, slicing through her already fragile calm.
"Yes, Mr. Clemens." She tried to steady her voice, but a gnawing unease clawed at her insides.
"Where did you buy it from?" His voice was icy, laced with suspicion.
"The company cafeteria," she replied, fearing this wouldn't meet his lofty standards.
"How is this acceptable?" Andrew jumped in, his tone severe. "I've told you before, Mr. Clemens wants food from a five-star hotel! How can you be so careless?"
"What makes him so special? If it's good enough for us, it should be good enough for him," Sadie burst out, unable to contain her frustration any longer.
"How dare you!" Andrew snapped, his face flushing with anger. "How dare you speak to Mr. Clemens like that?"
A surge of anger and courage welled up inside Sadie. She had endured enough of Micah's daily torment. If it weren't for his unreasonable breakfast demand, she wouldn't have had to climb 66 flights of stairs, nor would she have run into Ronan in such an embarrassing state. The thought of Ronan's dismissive retreat made her heartache. The man who once whispered sweet nothings was now a stranger. How could she endure this?
Caught in her painful memories, Sadie struggled to pull herself together until Andrew's words snapped her back to reality. "You're being transferred to the cleaning department tomorrow."
Stunned for a moment, she then flashed Andrew a relieved smile. "I quit!"
She yanked off her work badge and slapped it down on the table. The words came out without needing any summoned courage. For a moment, everyone in the room was stunned. Micah's eyes sparkled with a mix of surprise and amusement.
"What did you say?" His voice was low and magnetic, his gaze dangerous and intrigued.
Sadie stood her ground, voice firm and loud, "I said, I quit! I can't stand a boss like you, who is so inconsistent!"
Micah's smile widened, seeming to relish her defiance. Andrew and the other bodyguards exchanged uneasy glances, clearly shocked by her boldness.
"I suggest you see a psychiatrist and get treated early!" Sadie shot back, glaring at him with a mix of anger and relief. Then, with her head held high, she walked out of the conference room, feeling a wave of unprecedented exhilaration wash over her.
But just as she exited, her phone rang abruptly, the cold hand of reality gripping her newfound courage. She hurriedly answered, seeing Brenda's name on the screen.
"Ms. Roth, something wrong has happened!" Brenda's voice was urgent, filled with anxiety.
"What happened?" Sadie pressed, a sinking feeling settling in.
"The kindergarten teacher called. Noah and Nathan got into a fight and broke someone's car window. The other party is demanding twenty thousand dollars in compensation," Brenda replied worriedly.
"Twenty thousand dollars?" Sadie's mind raced, panic rising. She said, "Are they trying to extort us? I'll be right there!"
"Okay, I'm on my way to the school now. Let's meet there," Brenda said in a voice fraught with anxiety.
