Chapter 1640 Equal Footing
Declan's face turned bright red with anger.
Alan was about to lose it after seeing the amount on the invoice, but his phone buzzed with a text from Nicholas.
[Don't freak out. Stay calm and follow the usual steps. I'll figure out a way to make Sadie pay up.]
Reading this, Alan's tension eased a bit. He tossed the invoice in front of Sadie and tried to act generous.
"Since I signed the agreement myself, I won't shortchange you a single cent. Take the money and get out."
"Mr. Clemens," Ryan suddenly spoke up, "the company probably can't come up with such a large amount."
"What?"
Alan almost asked why but quickly held back.
Indeed, in business, funds are always tied up in operations and expansion. How could they possibly come up with such a large sum all at once? That would break the cash flow.
"According to the contract, it should be paid immediately," Sadie finally spoke. "If I don't get the money within three days, then convert it into shares. I want equity, or I'll see you in court!"
Alan gritted his teeth in anger. As a fraud, how could he dare go to court?
If Sadie really sued him, involving the police and the legal system, things would get messy.
"At this point, converting it into shares is the only option," Silas said slowly. "Calculate how much equity she would get if we convert it."
The accountants immediately started calculating.
The other board members murmured anxiously, but with Silas and Ryan backing Sadie, they didn't dare say much.
"Mr. Clemens, if the cash flow is disrupted, then VIC Group and the entire Clemens Group won't be able to operate. Unless you can cover the amount from your personal account, we'll have to convert it into shares," Ryan stated.
"How can I cover such a large amount from my personal account?" Alan immediately refused. "Convert it into shares then. How much?"
The accountant did some quick calculations and finally said to Alan, "Mr. Clemens, based on the conversion, you need to give Ms. James twenty percent of your shares in the Clemens Group."
"What??" Alan was shocked. "I only have forty percent of the Clemens Group. Giving her twenty means she'll be on equal footing with me!"
"Equal footing would be the best-case scenario," Sadie glared at him coldly.
"There's one more thing," Anthony said, pulling out a will. "This is the will Raymond made before he passed away."
"Raymond's will?"
Hearing this, the board members excitedly gathered around.
"The will states that after Raymond's death, all his assets are to be left to his three children. If anything happens to the children, all assets will automatically go to the GJ Foundation. No one else, including their parents and relatives, will get a cent."
"Until the children turn twenty, the assets will be managed by Mr. Clemens. When they turn twenty, the assets will be transferred to them with the joint approval of Mr. Clemens and Silas."
"Until then, no one, including Mr. Clemens and Silas, can touch these assets."
Anthony paused and handed a copy of the will to Ryan.
Ryan read it over and then passed it to Alan. "Do you want to take a look?"
"What does this mean?" Alan finally reacted. "All the assets go to those three kids? I don't get anything?"
By "I," he meant himself, not Micah.
He found it unbelievable. Surely Raymond would leave him something, but not a single cent?
"Even if those three kids aren't mine, the assets still go to them?"
Alan, unwilling to give up, continued to question.
"Yes," Anthony confirmed with a nod.
