CHAPTER HUNDRED AND SEVEN
“Tessa!!” The terrified and chilling voice of my sister echoed around the village, syncing with my terrified one as I fell to my impending death.
As my life flashed before my eyes, all I could think about was how little I'd achieved. In fact, I'd achieved absolutely nothing and yet, my body shook viciously as gravity pulled me to its bossom.
My feet hit the body of the tree, inciting sharp pain throughout my body, my scream echoing louder across the forest.
I'd closed my eyes in an instant, ready for my body to hit the ground but that was not what happened.
My body did hit something but instead of feeling overwhelming pain as I'd expected, all I felt was warmth.
Someone had caught me.
“I've got you, you're fine, okay?” The voice whispered and it took a few seconds for the fog to clear up and I slowly opened my eyes to Jamal's brown ones as he held me tightly. I took a deep breath and exhaled, my ability to think temporarily suspended.
All I could do was feel. His hands around my body was firm and he was stood on the ground despite my weight and the force of my fall. As he smiled at me, a blush forced itself on my cheeks, butterflies fluttering all over my belly and I smiled back at him like an idiot.
“Tessa?” I heard Anna's voice and my common sense made a return.
“Oh shit, thank you so much for saving my life!” I rushed out, coming down from his embrace quickly. I mentally gave myself a knock on the head. I'd literally just been heartbroken and betrayed and yet here I was, about to roll in the mud for another man.
Hell no, whatever this was, it was due to him breaking my fall and that gentle smile of his. It was gentle and reassuring. Not the type to sweep off your feet immediately but it definitely makes one want to crawl into his arms and remain there.
“It's not a big deal. I'll always catch you,” he said coyly
Okay, cringey but my stupid heart did flip flops. I wish I could control that organ a little bit.
“So we're going to become spies?” Anna whispered, her voice filled with fear.
I turned to her and I realized watching me fall from that height must have traumatized her more than it did to me.
“We'll keep trying, it's actually my fault for looking down, knowing fully well how much height terrified me,” I said, trying to remove that image from her mind.
I looked at the tree and how far I’d fallen.
“Y'all really want us to become monkeys, huh,” I commented and turned to the people that were staring at me since my near death experience. “I'm fine guys! Thank you,”
I still had that queen aura because they smiled and cheered before returning back to their businesses.
“I'm assuming you won't be trying tonight?” Jamal asked my sister and the way she shook her head, you could tell she wasn't about to try anytime soon.
“Spy Anna, what's the report on your end?” I dramatically called, holding my curved fingers over my mouth like it was a mix.
“Leave me alone,” she whined, a smile creeping up her face.
“Don't worry, we'll try again tomorrow. Please show us where we're going to sleep tonight. I'm really grateful for you catching me but my body still feels like it had fallen on the ground from up there,”
“Oh sorry about that. I'll get Toria to take you to the makeshift room for non-climbers,” he responded and shot a message on his phone.
“So what are we going to be doing while that wiz guy works on his app?” I asked as we walked down the long road.
It wasn't that long but with each painful step I took, I was near collapsing so it seemed like such a long journey.
“You can start by helping with the kitchen, farm or the watch tower but that'll mean you must be able to climb the ladder. Watch out!” He exclaimed as I nearly matched a pipe on the ground, forcing me to jump on him, terrified.
I looked down at what he had screamed at me about only to see a snake under his boots.
I guess I saw it at the same time with my sister cause we both screamed out at the same time.
“Ah!” I jumped back again, terrified.
I've never seen a snake with my eyes, only in pictures and the tales behind them were scary at best. Venom, all in one bite was what came to my mind and I moved further away from him, the pain my body was going through temporarily forgotten.
“What on earth is he doing?” Anna asked in astonishment and I turned around from my escape route to see Jamal holding the snake in his hand, his one hand on its neck.
“Ricky!” He called out and we stood in awe as someone climbed down a tree house as efficiently as a monkey would with a container and I watched as he pressed the snake harder, it's venom pouring into the plastic and then tightened his hold on the snake so it's mouth was shut.
“Head to the fifth tree and call for Tricia. I've gotta get this one to the aquarium made for them,” he said to us with a smile and quickly walked away while we watched.
“Jamal can be a nut job sometimes, don't worry, you'll get used to it,” Ricky, a guy our height with blonde hair said before turning away and back to the tree where he'd come down from.
“This is wilder than we could have ever imagined,” Anna whispered both in awe and a tinge of fear.
“Yea, I just hope this is the end of all the drama for today. I've had enough,” I said as we counted the trees to the fifth as we were instructed.
“But what if we do see a snake wherever we are made to sleep?” Anna whispered and my heart dropped to my stomach.
“Anna please don't made me scared,” I groaned, the image already spreading through my mind. She laughed hysterically as we got to where we were supposed to call for Tricia.
Hopefully I would be able to sleep tonight without one of those Xavier wet dreams.
