CHAPTER TWO HUNDRED AND THIRTY-SIX

“What is wrong? Did he get hurt?” I asked, quickly taking him from Roe who looked really tired.

“He's been crying all day and nothing we did was able to calm him down. He only got tired twice and slept but he's been all teary and refusing to eat,” Lisbeth explained as I cleaned his face.

“Why didn't you bring him to me? I gave you guys a phone so you could call if you needed anything.”

“We didn't want to bother you. I suspect those men weren't going to make things easy for you, and carrying your child right there would make them undermine you, so we decided to hold on until you were done,” Roe explained as we began walking towards my room.

It contained most of Xander's things but it was mine too when I didn't want to be disturbed by anybody.

Before we got in though, he had fallen asleep, breathing heavily. I called Memphis and booked an appointment with him the next day before he began his classes at the school.

When I settled him down on his cot, I faced my friends.

“Look, I need you guys to understand something. Things are not longer how it was in the beginning when we were at the mercy of these ky'rhans. They don't say anything, and we follow suit, and neither do we still have the effect of the nectar of the gods making us docile. On top of that beautiful pile is the fact that your friend has powers now and is actually the queen of this planet. We sacrificed so much to get here and I need you guys to stop acting like they own us. What's amazing is how Xavier sees me and places me as his equal in everything, so nobody is going to shove that misogynistic crap down my throat, and I'll swallow it. Of course, they'll try, but we all need to collectively stop taking it. Does that make sense?” I finished and Rose smiled at me.

“I keep seeing you as my friend instead of the amazing woman you've become right through the process of this journey,” she replied, a tinge of tears touching her cheek.

“Yea, she's a queen now and can make shit happen too,” Lisbeth added, bringing a smile to my face.

“Yes so whatever passion you've suppressed, unleash it now because we're finally free. Do you understand that? We can be whatever we want even in this foreign world. What's amazing is that they need us more than they know, so don't keep your talent, passion,, or craft to yourself.”

“Pft. Not like I can suddenly start going to school at this age and with a child,” Roe huffed, relaxing her head on the couch.

“That's not enough to stop you and didn't you hear me? We're not what we used to be or restricted to the same rules anymore! We'll get handsomely paid nannies and if I can be an active queen with a baby, why can't you be whatever you want?”

She sighed, deep in thought.

“Can I… can I become a doctor? No, that's too much, a nurse?” She asked quietly.

It was like the idea scared her.

Right from our childhood, Roe and I had had to quell our desires because of the reality surrounding us. Everyone kept showing it us, how dreaming too much had gotten so many humans in trouble.

With the books I was constantly reading, it was more difficult for me to let go but when I finally did, it was absolute and complete.

Instead, Roe and I began making plans under the circumstances we were in, not wanting to upset the system.

We were allowed to own shops anywhere in the world so we focused on that instead, drawing excitement from the fact that we were going to be paid enough from the SOS experiment depending on who we got paired with.

We hoped at least one of us got a high-ranking Moderate so we could invest the money in the business on an island. We had drawn up plans and all of that, happy with our decision.

But then Xavier happened to me and everything took a different turn.

Now that we were finally free to be whatever we wanted, or at least they were considering I can't not be the queen, it was probably mind bugging going back in time to remember what it is you ever wanted.

So I sat next to her on the couch and held one of her hands because the other was used to guide Brendan to breastfeed.

“Roe?” I called her and she hummed in response. “You can be a doctor, a pilot, a mother, a wife, a teacher, whatever the fuck you want. There's absolutely nothing stopping you. The only thing you're not allowed to do is rot in this new planet because you have doubts taller than your tall ass self. We're the first free humans on this planet, and we owe our future generations a lot of impact, so make sure you choose whatever you're most passionate about, okay?” I finished with a smile.

“Okay, I'll be a doctor.”

“Amazing! You'll come with me to see Memphis tomorrow so he can tell you what you need to start, hm?”

“Okay,” she croaked and hugged me with one hand.

Lisbeth took Brendan from her and we hugged tighter, our sisterly bond getting stronger.

Although I missed Anna and my parents with every fiber of my being, she provided me that feeling of home. It dawned on me that I would have been fucked if she hadn't come with me. Throughout the different situations we found ourselves in, I never had to worry about my son because she and Lisbeth always got him taken care of.

“Thank you so much,” she whispered.

“You're my best friend, and Lisbeth's my elder sister because I don't even know what the heck I'm doing sometimes,, but I feel confident because I know that besides Xavier, two amazing women have my interest hear,t, so whatever I can do, I'll do it again and again.”

“Okay, you both are not going to make me cry, I'm going back, I have a date to prepare for,” Lisbeth said, making us squeal in excitement.

“Where is he taking you to?” I asked, smiling and really happy she found her glow back.

She began giving us the details, and we basically went into an emergency date preparation chat, just like young girls who didn't have a care in the world.

And we did have a lot of cares, but in that moment, none of it mattered.
