CHAPTER FIFTEEN

The tension in the room could be cut with a sharp knife, as I watched him try to articulate his response. I guess he expected me to be overjoyed with the contract. Most people simply get married without any conditions but here he was, offering my family a way out of the trashy life we lived.
But I wasn't easily bought over, even though my father's surgery was important, I knew he wouldn't want me signing over my life to an enemy in exchange for it. Besides, if he had simply followed the script, after two years, I would have a child for him and he'll settle us with a big enough amount to do everything we needed, the rest were just wants.

He rubbed the bridge of his nose and took a deep breath before answering me.

“First of all, call me Xavier. The title is for my subjects and you are their queen. So, I did a deeper dive into your family background and I now understand your resentment towards me and how personal it is but look, you can't keep living in the past. This is your future now, you get to help your family and give them a better life. They'll live better than moderates and your sister can go to the university. It's what you need,” he replied, outlining the summary of the second page.

And he was right, it contained everything that would make my family happy but he was still not answering the real question.

“Xavier, that's not what I'm asking you. I got that part, I'm just wondering why you are spending so much on me. You've already spent a hundred million dollars in purchasing me –”

“Don't use that word, you weren't for sale, we just put the bid to avoid lower status aliens from having access to you girls and filling up the world with lower castes like them. You are not a property to be bought, none of you are,” he cut me off, his eyes making me believe him.

“Okay but that still doesn't change the fact that you are spending a whole lot on me when you could have any other person, human, alien or a mix of both. All you have to do is make an announcement and they'll line up at your doors. I don't want to be with you because no matter how much you talk about my future, I can't make the hatred I've harbored against you for years suddenly disappear. Brendan was the light in our lives, he was so small yet so brave and he wasn't supposed to be recruited yet. You changed the age from eighteen to sixteen just because you wanted to get control of the middle east. Most humans begin training at sixteen so they'll stand a chance to succeed at the war front but the only training he had was protecting me from my own foolishness and your soldiers came in and beat him to death right in front of our eyes and left his corpse for us to bury! I don't think I'll ever forgive you so you can go find someone else!” I snapped, anger swelling inside of me like a lake of lava.

“But I don't want anyone else. I can't have anyone else, Tessa; it's you. I know I don't act like it but there's a part of my body, the soul which I always neglect that thrives off your existence. Also, I grew up without my biological mother, I don't want my child to experience that type of neglect and hatred,” He confessed, stunning me in so many ways but I focused on the most outrageous.

“You have a soul? Since when do aliens get souls? I thought the scientists said the experiment removed that part of the human genes that you guys inherit,”

It seemed something was wrong with his nose as he scratched it again in frustration before answering me

“They lied. We told them to.”

“Wait a minute, I understand withholding information, okay? You guys do that a lot but flat out lying? And that is such a weird thing to lie about. Why?” I asked, needing answers but he was getting too worked up.

“It's necessary for our plans, Tessa so let it go,”

“I'm just asking because I still haven't figured out why you are set on having me. None of the things you've said really answered the question from your own perspective. You were just listing the benefits to me, what about you?” I pressed him for answers, my stubbornness forcing me to ignore the rage that was clouding his face with each word I uttered.

“It's none of your business!” He thundered in a loud voice, his anger and alien form fully showing , fangs and all, making me terrified and I recoiled immediately, my boldness dissipating in a second. He was terrifying to look at, his body language looking like he was set to attack.

I have no idea what exactly set him off but I wasn't about to find out the consequences of riling him up so badly, I was already traumatized from the sight of his alien form.

“Um, okay. I'm going to go,” I whispered, my body shaking from fear as I hastily got up from the chair and ran out of the office, amidst his shouts for me to come back.

I've seen him angry before but never at me but that outburst made me feel a primal level of fear I've never experienced before.

His spear like teeth had been on full display, his skin going completely blue and his eyes the color of night.
It was like he could kill me if I moved in the wrong direction so I did the only logical thing at that point.

I ran.
