CHAPTER FIFTY-THREE
It was weird competing with strange women for my husband but the consequences were not nice so I couldn't do what was on my mind which was to walk back into the car. I was honestly done with all of the drama.
I had a short attention span and being through all of the things that happened in the past hour simply made me want to cuddle up in bed and sleep. Processing of everything would have to wait.
Xavier was supposed to come out feeling groggy and looking drugged so he would stumble into the hands of one of us. I looked at my competitors, long tail swishing, long ears pointing and different levels of alien makeup that had them looking like traditional Indian worshipers but from outer space.
The girl next to me was pissed each time she looked at me and then she'd turn on her one thousand watt smile when she looked back at the door. I held back laughter as her ears began twitching from all the different ranges of uncomfortable emotions.
But when Xavier walked out of the room, it was obvious that this exercise was useless.
He wasn't groggy or feeling sleepy and there was no ounce of confusion around him.
“Xavier?” I called to him, cautious and apprehensive.
He looked in my direction but it didn't feel the same. He wasn't upset or anything, just unfeeling.
Xavier’s eyes were one of the most amazing things about him, how it'd draw you in and you'll be forced to pay attention but right now, it was just dull.
He didn't even pay much attention to me but I heaved a deep breath when he walked over and took my hand and walked us to the podium that was so high we could see the hairs on the people gathered. There were two large chairs that the materials confused me. I didn't want to get caught staring at my back so I focused on what was happening. Meanwhile, Xavier didn't let go of my hand, he clutched it so tightly I feared he'd break it but I was actually scared of saying something in front of these people and getting a backlash from him.
The man Xavier has pointed to as his father walked out of the crowd and took a bag from a guard and began climbing the stairs to the podium where we stood.
“Today we have gathered to crown the King of Zorvath but we seek answers, Prince Xavier. What happened to the one we had before? It's understandable that you're going to take us home but we didn't know it was happening so soon. What happened to King Seth?” The man asked in an accusatory tone.
Xavier looked at me before answering, making my pulse heat up in fear and wild imaginations. What if he they didn't like the fact that he sent his father to the dungeon because of a lowly human like me?
“He tried to take what was scary to me,” he announced in a voice that commanded obedience. No one would question him without getting himself embarrassed.
But it seemed the man hadn't gotten the message.
“You are trying to tell this great council that you unseated a great king because of this measly human? Why on Zorvath is she even allowed to stand beside you instead of behind you? She's nothing compared to our beautiful, Moderate daughters!” The man screamed, a vein nearly popping on his neck.
Xavier was bereft of emotions, including anger.
Instead, he turned to the man and stared him down until he coughed uncomfortably.
“I'm sorry for my outburst, I was just conveying the message of the council,” he said, trying to undo the horror he'd probably unleashed on himself.
“Elder Scion, If this great council doesn't think they can respect and honor my Luminari, Queen Tessa Seth, then my first proclamation as King would be to dismantle it. What do they say?” He spoke calmly but every word was heard and felt as they all began speaking above each other, disagreeing with the man who had sowed so much discord among Xavier and his cousin that they found it hard to truly be great friends with each other.
The room full of over a hundred were still shouting and I could see how much they loved their position, unwilling to let it go to anyone else.
Xavier raised his hand and everyone kept shut immediately.
Then someone came forward.
“We apologize, your highness for council elder Scion’s mistakes. He's loyal to a dead King. No one should ever come between a ky’rhan and his Luminari. Please, allow someone else to do the honors of putting the crown on your head and that of our beloved queen,” a ky’rhan spoke up for them.
“Go ahead, Rod,” he replied robotically.
The alien changed back to his human features and rushed up to the podium and took the bag from a disgraced Scion who quickly disappeared into the crowd the moment he got down, probably going to plot his revenge or something.
But for now, everyone was focused on the King, and well, me.
All of a sudden, flashlights and cameras were turned on and I had to cover my eyes from the onslaught of the lights. I heard snickers from some of the girls at the back and I stood straighter, if I went blind because of this, it was worth protecting my dignity.
“Earth, today we crown a new King. A true powerhouse, a being that embodies Zorvath and Earth in an amazing combination and a new queen that symbolizes inclusion. As we place these crowns on their heads, know that we hear you and a wave of change is coming. All hail King Xavier and Queen Tessa!” He decreed and the crowd responded in excitement.
“All hail King Xavier and Queen Tessa!”
A heavy crown was placed up on my head after Xavier’s and for the first time in my life, I felt powerful. Not confused, angry at my situation, frustrated or pitiful.
Simply powerful and like I could actually make changes to the conditions that surrounded me. I just hope it'll all be worth it in the end and that I don't lose myself to this new world.
After I was handed a scepter, Xavier raised his hand and the cheer reduced gradually until everywhere was so quiet you could hear a pin drop and my smile had begun to hurt.
“My first proclamation as king is that there'll never be a trial for kings using this system. Orchestra a physical situation, not this fucked up crap,” he boomed, his voice carrying over the entire room.
Their shocked gasps echoed all the way into the cameras and I loved how everyone gradually began to realize that a new dawn was on the world.
After this, it was all a flurry of activities. The fake hugs I received could fill the ocean but I didn't give much of a fuck. I learnt that it was part of ruling with grace and that's what I aimed for. I'd still get back at the girls that always acted like I was beneath their shoes but for now, I'd let them have their fun.
We finally rounded up at the capital and I even got to see my new office but I didn't have the time to explore it.
I wasn't the only tired one.
We got in the car and it occurred to me that Xavier hadn't let go of my hand all through the evening.
I was going to ask him what he'd seen in there but his facial expression deterred all attempts at communicating with him.
When we got back, there was a dreadful feeling that crept up my spine. Was I ready for this? Our wedding night? How would my first time be with someone who wasn't even speaking to me?
Unbeknownst to me, I was in for a different type of shock.
As we walked in, the entire staff had gathered to give us a warm welcome, songs and all of that. I simply just wanted to get this over with and go to bed.
But as I proceeded to head to said bed, Xavier stopped me at the front door.
“Your room is over there. I had your things moved,” he said with that robotic voice that was beginning to piss me off.
“What do you mean? We're married, why are we sleeping in different rooms?” I asked, shocked at my own reaction. I tried to be happy with the distance he was putting between us but I totally didn't want that. I was willing to make this work and yet, he was pushing me away.
“Just got to bed, Tessa. I'll be by in the morning with the new rules if this arrangement. Goodnight,” he declared and shut the door in my face while I stood there, mouth agape and totally embarrassed in front of these guards.
