CHAPTER FIFTY-SIX

Xavier’s kindness was short lived as I'd predicted and he'd gone back to throwing orders and I did all I could to avoid getting his attention but somehow kept getting reprimanded.

He'd berated me for almost everything, except breathing. For walking too slowly or too fast, for not acting the movie script he'd designed for me, for not pretending we were deeply in love or the fact that I leaned my head on his chest when we had to stand for over thirty minutes for a security check; he kept going at me and i was sure these guards must have developed a sense of irritation about me as they couldn't even hold back their snickering when he snapped at me for the umpteenth time about walking too slowly.

“I know I asked you to pretend you were pregnant but that doesn't mean you have to crawl!” He hissed in anger.

I'd been holding back my tears and frustration all morning and I just couldn't anymore.

“I'm done!” I snapped and turned around the way we'd come to everyone’s shock.

“Wait, what do you mean? You're scheduled with Marina in the next five minutes!” He bellowed at me but I kept walking.

I'd thought a car would pick us up from the Tarmac but we'd walked from there because people needed to see us pretend we were the couple of the year.

My emotions on their own had been through a whole lot, from the bomb he dropped on me this morning to my first time flying. I'd felt like I was going to vanish into thin air from all the nerves but then he held me through it until I stopped panicking. But then we land and he's been going at me like I'd done something wrong. It was strange how my body was still attracted to him after everything but my mind was stronger and we hated Xavier Seth, full stop, no negotiations.

“Ma'am, you can't go back. The King insists you turn around,” a guard stood in front of me, making me more livid than I ever thought possible.

“If you don't get out of my way, I'm going to touch you and his ky’rhan will probably cut off any part of your body that comes in contact with mine so fuck off!” I lashed out at him, my voice more stable than I felt inside.

“Aaron, let her be. I'll deal with this mess myself,” I heard him say from behind and the idea that me having enough of his bullying was considered a mess nearly drove me to tears but as the insolent guard stepped out of my path, I kept walking.

I might not know where I was headed but I just needed to be out of his presence, I was suffocating.

“Oomph!” I exclaimed in shock as I felt myself getting lifted off the ground by Xavier.

I'd thought it was going to end there but the ground kept disappearing from my eyes as I realized he was… flying? There were no wings on him obviously and the grip I had on him could kill a small animal so I couldn't turn around to figure out what was happening but in moments, I began to hyperventilate, my breaths coming out in short spurts and my eyes tearing up.

I was terrified and confused, my fear of heights taking on a new level.

I kicked and screamed at him, but he didn't budge.

“Drop me please!” I resorted to begging before I finally felt a rush of air and finally I was back in solid ground.

I squatted and curled up on myself on the ground of the rooftop. He'd dropped us and I couldn't stop the tears this time around.

“I didn't know you were actually scared of heights like that, I'm sorry about that but you need to get over it. We have a lot of things to achieve this week and you are not performing well. The process by which I became King is questionable and we need to give them something else to focus on so buckle up and do better,” he said to me and I felt a burning fire of anger swell up inside of me

“Fuck you, Xavier! I didn't ask for any of this. You could have chosen any other person, someone you didn't actually detest who would kill to lick your ass and do anything you want, why did it have to be me?” I screamed in anger at Xavier who was standing away from me while looking down at me with irritation.

He then walked over to where I squatted and bent down too, looking me in the eyes.

“It can't be anyone else, Tessa. You own my soul and I need you to stop being such a whiney little girl and do your part in this. And who knows? Maybe you can actually end up doing something for your fellow humans,” he said and I was shocked and confused.

“Yes, I know that's what you tell yourself each time you're frustrated with me but it's just crazy. There's nothing you can do to get out of this, it's the life You've been given and instead of throwing tantrums, you can actually do what you need to do. You and I are slaves to the demands of the people of Zorvath and everything we want is only secondary to that so suck it up and let's go meet my secretary. She's a busy woman and so will you be afterwards,” he finished and stood up, hand outstretched and expecting me to put mine in his.

But I didn't want to do anything with him so I pushed myself back up without his help.

“I was stronger than this before you started tearing into me all day. If you want me to do this, at least stop talking down on me like that, especially in front of those stupid guards. What makes you think they'll ever respect me with how much you've been belittling me without any damn break?”

“I wouldn't be doing that if you were acting as you should. Look, I was happy we got a Luminari that was strong and had a lot of fire in her. I didn't know it could be snuffed out so soon and it's disappointing. Like I said before, stop complaining and play your part, don't expect me to cuddle you into complacency. You can go that way, it's the elevator, stop at the floor below this one. I'll meet you there,” he said rudely and I began to wonder what really happened to him during that coronation.

A switch was flipped and I was left with someone I didn't understand.

As I rode the elevator down, I began to properly think over my options.

His father might have been a selfish and murderous asshole but he taught me something. I could end all of this with a little bit of bad behavior and I knew someone who would not mind sending me out of my misery.

But then, I thought of the consequences and I shook my head.

The elevator opened to a hallway that encompassed several doors, all of which were locked.

For a second, I wondered if I'd stopped at the wrong floor but I remember he'd told me to stop directly on the floor under us and that was what I put imputed in the elevator.

Taking a deep breath, I began opening doors, hoping to run into someone ready to help a queen.
