CHAPTER HUNDRED AND THIRTY

“Told you!” Anna quipped with a chuckle.

“Shut up,” I grumbled and went towards the door that opened on the side.

“But you're right, this is absolutely dumb. There's literally an iron, technologically locked door that's leading to the same place as this?”

“My point exactly. They didn't even bother locking it or anything,” I replied as I pushed open the door.

I turned on the light, and it was the same thing I'd seen the other time I'd stumbled in here.

Stacks of paper were everywhere, but they'd reduced considerably by a wide margin. Seems they took it along with them and left the ones they didn't need

“What do they mean by casualty?” Anna whispered as she looked at one file.

I turned over to her, taking a look at the file.

Below the CONFIDENTIAL written on the front page, casualty was also penned close to it.

“Pod failure, asteroid, pod…” I read, “these are people who died on this mission. Humans,” I looked at my sister as we came to the same realization.

There were thousands of these files and over a hundred names per list.

“They're killing them,” I whispered.

“Well, it doesn't look intentional and look, the dates are fifteen years prior. I think this was when they were testing the pods to see how effective it was,” Anna explained and we began going over lots of them.

My phone rang out in the darkness.

It was Xavier.

My heart race picked up.

“We need to leave,” I whispered, whatever was here was outdated and wasn't of any use. There was no point getting caught sneaking around unnecessarily.

“Yea but wait, there's something under this table,” she whispered and began pushing it aside.

I shook my head, but curiosity grabbed my attention as well and I joined her in moving the huge wood aside.

“How did you even notice this?” I wondered as a vault was revealed.

Obviously locked and I doubt I'd be able to unlock it but then I remembered the password Seth had given and I decided to try it out.

If it was Nexarion, I would take as much as I could without getting caught. Having my own money in a strange land would be so dope.

My phone rang again and I heard the screech of tires and I knew we needed to get out of here.

I input the passcode and it turned red.

“You pressed 8 twice instead of once,” she whispered.

“Oh,”

I input it again and it opened.

“Oh my goodness,” we exclaimed in unison.

We had to step back as the vault opened across the room, moving the table across to the edge.

It was a nuclear weapons deposit.

It seemed like it was quickly deposited in here and locked, which was quite dangerous. One wrong move and the entire capital is crushed to ashes.

My phone rang again and I quickly pressed the red button that close was written atop of it.

It gradually moved back together, shutting itself back.

“Tell Dad to move the government building elsewhere. Do not tell him why!” I warned as we quickly ran out of the room in time to see Xavier running up the stairs, his face shrouded in anger.

“I know you're upset with me but that is no excuse to ignore my calls!” He shouted at me, and my heart began beating frantically in fear.

But I put on a defiant face. The last time he acted this much of an asshole, being scared didn't do me any good so I took deep breaths and walked past him towards my parents who had heard the exchange.

“Where did you guys go?” Dad asked and it seemed they were also looking for us while checking out the building.

“Anna will tell you about it later, we've got to go,” I whispered in response

“Try not to piss him off. There's no one to save you from his wrath over there since the other guy turned out to be a traitor,” Momma advised and I nodded, hugging them all again.

I walked back to the corridor where he stood beside Anna and I hugged her tightly, holding back the tears that threatened to spill.

She was not as strong and began crying as we hugged. It seemed it had just occurred to her that we'd not be seeing each other again.

“I love you so much Anna, don't ever forget that,” I whispered before detaching from the hug.

“I love you too,” she croaked, her voice filled with emotion.

“Mr. Christopher, the car downstairs will take you anywhere you need to go. The driver is a trusted human as well so you can work with him or fire him if you wish. We'll be leaving now,” Xavier addressed my dad who nodded.

“You won't say goodbye to your father?” He asked me and I ran to his embrace, tears streaming down our faces.

It felt like I was about to jump into a chasm and my family were standing right behind me, watching as I fell.

After another teary family hug, I separated from them.

As Xavier’s hand connected to mine, I took in the final image of them physically, and seared it into my mind.

Hopefully, they'll never forget me.

We went through the motions of disappearing into the darkness and appearing back at the mansion.

I wanted to ask him why he didn't bring my entire family back here and gave them a car instead but I wasn't ready to say anything to him.

“This way,” he instructed, showing me to the path that led to the Motherhsip’s entrance.

When I saw it, a feeling of dread and anxiety gripped me.

I was about to walk into an uncertain future with a man who I wasn't certain of his feelings towards me.

My heart still beat with him near me and the spot where our bodies connected was still filled with their usual sparks but what if all of this was in my head just like before and I was going to another planet to suffer?

Will I be too dense to expect a good life on an alien planet?

All of these questions ran through my head as we walked into the shimmering door and into the ship.
