CHAPTER HUNDRED AND TEN
Tricia woke me up from the ground early in the morning with a tap on the shoulder.
I jerked awake and looked around in confusion and then discomfort set in.
“You don't like the tent?” She asked in confusion.
“I was feeling really sick and had to come outside,” I replied, my voice weak.
“Sleeping out here is definitely going to make things worse. Come, let's get you inside,” she said and helped me up.
“Thank you,”
“It’s alright. I'll get you hot tea and some painkillers.”
“Katie already gave me some, I think it's in my pocket,” I said as I put my hands in my pocket.
My phone vibrated at the same time with a message and I took it out along with the drugs.
“Oh okay, I'll get you guys breakfast then. Get well soon, okay?” She said with a smile before leaving.
It felt nice to have someone looking after me with good intentions and not just because they're paid to do it like Theresa.
I opened my phone and it was a video message from a strange number.
As I clicked open, I heard Anna groggily wake up from sleep, stretching like a feline.
I clicked the play button and nearly dropped my phone out of shock.
“This is the state of your father now Tessa, and it's all your fault. If you don't come back, I'll have to do something drastic, okay?” Xavier said unto the camera and my tears at the sight, alongside Anna's sobs, echoed in the room. “The mother ship is leaving soon and I need my Luminari on it too so if you don't want him dead, you have to come back to me, okay? Don't make me do something we'll both regret,” he said and then walked closer to the camera and bent down so his face was all I could see.
Then I heard loud screams of my father being tortured.
“No!” I screamed at the screen, my fingers shaking and Anna's grip on my hand tightening in terror.
“You have twenty-four hours, or you can say goodbye to your precious Daddy,” he said with a wicked smile.
And the screen went black.
My father was tied up, his weak knees tied as well and his forehead bashed in. He looked so old and tired and the alien that wanted me to go to him and be his happily ever after was standing above him with a hammer.
Immediately, Tricia got back into the room with a tray of breakfast and saw our faces running down with tears.
“What's wrong? Why are you guys crying?” she asked, quickly dropping the items in her hand.
I couldn't respond so she took the phone from my hand and pressed play, the entire scene playing again for us to hear.
Anna jumped into my arms, sobbing hysterically, and I couldn't do anything to comfort her but hold her as I cried.
That thing wasn't Xavier, it couldn't be.
No matter how angry he was, he always treated me nicely. Even when he was intentionally being an asshole, he cared about my comfort and I remembered him always coming to find me in random rooms so he could put me back on his bed. I was used to a version of him that would kill anybody, even his own father but would never touch me or my loved ones.
But that video righted my perspective.
Xavier was a control freak and he would do anything to make sure he got what he wanted. The only difference between him and his father is that he's good at manipulation and I am the object of his fascination.
I heard my father's scream as Tricia watched the video and it sent a shiver up my spine.
“He's going through all of that because of me,” I sobbed harder, my guilt mixing with the pain and fear of the absolute worst thing that Xavier can do.
“Are you.. are you going to go?” Tricia asked, her voice nearly indecipherable.
I looked up at her and I could see the fear on her face.
I was a danger to the life that they'd curated for themselves. This wasn't just about me anymore, I had other people to think about.
If I go back, I'll definitely be mind controlled by Xavier to give him every detail about where I was and this would put the resistance in danger. They hadn't even started making any real damage so if I went and blurted out all their secrets, I was condemning all of them to death.
So it was either my father or the entire resistance.
“I don't know, Tricia. I can't think straight right now,”
“I understand. This is a tough decision to make but take your time, you don't have to join us for the day's work, okay?” She rubbed my shoulders and left.
“Why is this happening to us Tessy? We should have just gone through the system and returned back to live as much as a normal life as possible. Why did he have to get this stupid obsession with him?” Anna vented, putting my emotions into words.
“Apparently it's not even decided by him,” I sniffled, “ he might have wanted someone else but his alien form is so strong that he gets first pick and he just has to follow suit,”
“What happens if he meets his soulmate?”
“I have no idea but this makes me feel like he hates me a little bit because he doesn't get a choice,”
“Naa. Don't justify his crap. He's a terrible person and that's all there is to this,” Anna grumbled and got up from my lap on the bed.
She carried the tray and came to the bed.
“I don't think I can stomach anything right now,” I said as the memory of my father's broken face came to mind.
“But you're sick. You kind of need to eat,” she said as she dropped it in front of me. “Besides, we can't think straight on an empty stomach.
“I don't think it matters if we eat or not. This isn't a choice I should be made to make. I'm barely legal for crying out loud,” I groaned in frustration, putting my head in my hands.
“We can't betray these people though,” she whispered and I nodded, my head hurting so bad from the menace that was my life right now.
“Ughhhh,” I groaned in frustration and collapsed on the bed, tears streaming down my face.
