CHAPTER HUNDRED AND THIRTY-NINE

I watched tensely as they fought to keep her alive while being engulfed by guilt and fear.

If I'd been a better man to her, I wouldn't have needed to traverse the galaxy for the only thing she'd ever asked for, for herself.

All her requests to me had always been about others so this time, I knew I couldn't refuse it.

But all of that would have been different if I'd not gone and traumatized her.

I chide myself for the pathetic feelings that coursed through my body and lay back down.

A nurse noticed I'd stopped staring daggers into everyone in the room and came to reattach an IV into my system with something that wasn't my wife's blood.

Whatever it was must have been really strong because in no time, I blacked out.

When I opened my eyes, I realized Xy’thern had taken over and shifted me into our mind.

I watched as he held her hand, trying to force energy into her body and mind but it seemed she wasn't responding.

Her pulse was finally stable but from the look on Fanny's face, she wasn't out of the woods yet.

I pushed the thought into him to ask them how she was doing.

“She's stable and the baby is too but we need more blood; human blood and her friend's own aren't compatible,” Fanny replied, a look of panic on his face.

I shifted Xy’thern back immediately, anger welling up inside of me.

“You drained her to the point where all that blood is not enough?”

“We needed to be sure you were okay.”

I didn't bother asking any other questions or I would strangle my best doctor.

“Hey! You!” I called the ky’rhan responsible for blood transfusions. “Come with me. We are going to the human quarters and you'll find as many people that are compatible with her blood as possible.”

As I stepped out of the clinic, that was when I realized that something was wrong with the ship.

“Look, go there and tell them I sent you to get it. I need to attend to something real quick,” I commanded the young ky'rhan and rushed off to the command room, ignoring his incessant nods.

Immediately I got in, all my engineers seemed to take a deep breath collectively.

“Thank goodness you're back, Your Majesty,” Gru, my head technician said as I took in the damage. “We've been trying to get it under control but..”

His words faded into the background as I sat on the seat of the central controls.

I placed my hands on the spot where only my fingerprints could activate and I opened my mind, allowing every bit of the ship's atoms to filter into my mind.

Then I began to repair every tear, split and mishap.

It took me hours before I was done and I resolved to never let this happen again.

Again, I felt the pang of Corbin's betrayal. If he didn't let his greed take over him, he would have been able to help me keep the ship in good shape

I struggled to get up from the chair, my strength depleted from all the repairs I had to do.

My alien kept dragging me towards the clinic, our mind now focused on Tessa since everything about the ship was in top shape. I still had a few things to deal with but I left that to the engineers as I'd exhausted my strength.

I gradually found my way back to the clinic and I went to her side.

She was still asleep and thankfully, bags of blood lined a cupboard, ready to be sent into her system.

“You guys can go rest now, I'm not going anywhere,” I told her friends who had been here since I opened my eyes and probably earlier. It felt strange knowing there were people who would be there for someone else without gaining anything in return.

I then focused back on Tessa, her face scrunched up in a nightmare.

I rushed over and I took a hold of her hand, making a surge of energy to pour into me.

I quickly took my hands back in shock.

“It's a two way thing, you don't have to be scared of taking strength from her,” Fanny said, noticing what had happened.

“How are you sure about that?”

This had never happened before. I knew that if she ever needed my help, through our mental connection, I could give her energy to sustain herself until drugs and medicine worked but the idea of her doing the same for me was unheard of.

My Luminari was so many wonderful things but she was meant to depend on me, not the other way around.

“She was the one that stabilized you while you were still under the pain of the poison,” he began, reminding me of the blinding pain I'd been in a day before. “And she was stronger when you were here but when you left, the drugs were struggling to settle into her system.” He then checked her vials again before turning to me. “Now that you're here now, she's getting better pretty fast.”

“Then let her get better without me taking from her, okay? Fix me up with something else, even if it takes longer to work,” I commanded him and went back to my own bed.

My mind was rife with thoughts of what had just happened.

Tessa was powerful in a way that made no sense.

She was a human through and through, yet she could feed me her strength without even trying.

Her blood was stronger than mine.

And lastly, she had willingly sacrificed herself to save me.

I couldn't wrap my head around the last part; she had run away from me and then I traumatized her in an unforgivable way, yet she was willing to take a 50/50 chance on her life to save mine.

It made no sense and I couldn't wait for her to be awake so we could talk.

A part of me was already filled with joy and excitement that she'd forgiven me but the part that kept this ship afloat and made logical plans told me she did this because it seemed like the only available option.

I mean, it was even perfect; if someone else had gotten the chance to do this, they would have demanded I hand over my position to them but knowing Tessa, all she'd want is for me to make sure humans are treated well.

She was a true queen.

As I settled down to rest, the door jarred open and three of my inner council, the former regional heads of states walked in.

Kaid, Lyra-en and Astrum.

Their facial expressions were gloomy and I sensed disappointment in their emotions.

‘What could be wrong again?’ I wondered.

I was out of energy to deal with anything else but it didn't look like I had much of a choice.
