CHAPTER THIRTY-NINE
"You know you're allowed to like them, right? They're not at fault for being who they are just as we aren't. I've realized that hating MODs and XYZs just based on their species is kind of hypocritical so if he ticks your boxes, go for it,” I said to her and she sighed.
“Is that why you're going out with him? You're finally giving in?” she asked, her face showing concern.
“Of course not! It's just that, he's right. I've been cooped up in here since the day I left our house, going out only about once and that was for an emergency. I need to see somewhere else or I might go crazy. The pool is becoming boring and you know how much that says about me,”
“Yeah you're literally a mermaid. I wish you weren't in this situation. I still have those pictures of ancient Greece and their clear waters that we were supposed to go with Rose,” she said and the faraway look in her eyes reminded me of how much I'd given up to be here and it wasn't even my choice.
I still remember tearing the pages out of Dad's books on geography and some magazines and used it to create the scrapbook she was talking about. We always talked about how we were going to escape the poverty and live a life of happiness without having to worry that if Mama stopped working for a week, we'd go broke or Dad won't get his drugs. It would have been a great and free life.
But we're here now and that ship has sailed.
I sat down and held her hand, our mood becoming pensive.
“I know right? But another reason why I'm giving this a try, Anna, is because I feel like I have a purpose here. Or at least, a role I can play. I mean, I simply asked a d we're getting a new hospital! It's something we've been begging the authorities for years! I will try to at least be civil with him so I can make life better for as many people as I can. He's the enemy quite alright but he can help us if I play my cards right,”
“I hope he realizes how amazing you are and how lucky he is that you are agreeing to this. He better not break your heart,” she said, her eyes shiny with an emotional tear but her words scared the shit out of me.
“Woah, hold your horses. Who said anything about my heart? I'm not falling for him, not for one minute. This is just a harmless date,”
“Now, who's been delusional? I know he's like, such a heartless alien but his human form, damn! The girls in my class don't ever shut up about him. I can't wait for your wedding to happen and then they realize you're not going anywhere and guess who's the sister to the fucking queen?” She announced excitedly, her face brightening up with happiness.
“You are enjoying this, aren't you?” I laughed
“Of course. That's the beauty of being a younger sister. We enjoy our big sister's sacrifices and steal from their closets,” she declared and proceeded back to the closet, where she ransacks the entire place, picking her choice of outfits.
“You do realize this isn't a shopping mall, right?”
“No, but it's my sister's closet. I kind of have rights to it,”
I heard the door open and I thought it was Theresa coming to check up on me but she would have knocked so I went to confirm.
It was definitely not Theresa but a half naked Xavier who was in the process of taking of his belt.
I stood like a bedazzled deer in headlights.
“Sorry, I came back later than I was supposed to. I didn't know you were still interested in the date until Theresa called,” he spoke and it took me a few seconds before my brain stopped processing his perfectly sculpted body and began to actually think about what he said.
“Oh, yea. I.. um.. I changed my mind. Is this appropriate?” I spluttered like an idiot, and cursing myself for asking him such a question. His opinion shouldn't matter and I wasn't going to change it if he said anything annoying
“You look beautiful. And yes, it's perfect,” he muttered in gravely voice that put me in a mild trance.
“Tessa, I – oh shit. Sorry, I'll… um, yea, see you later,” Anna mumbled in shock and confusion before running away, literally from the room.
“My sister, um, she wanted to get some of my clothes,” I explained like a little child. Can he cover up or something? I was getting way too distracted by his hot body and that wasn't a good look on my resume. If the alien finds out how crazy my head was going at the sight before me, he might never wear a shirt again. I'm still fighting the battle of the gray sweatpants and I'm losing horribly.
“You know you can take her shopping, right? Just take Brennan or some of the guys with you. Don't want you running away from me, you know,” he said and I nodded like a good, little girl.
Stupid, stupid, Tessa obsessing over what I can't have.
He began walking in my direction and I took a step back for every one he took forward, my heart palpitating unnecessarily. Can it just shut up? Oh, that'll mean I'm dead I guess but whatever it was doing was unacceptable. My pussy was reading the signs wrong.
He finally got close enough for me to inhale his scent and I had to stop myself from getting closer to him so I can take in more of him.
“Tessa?” He called my name and I can't even tell you what that did to me.
“Hm?” I hummed because my voice went on leave.
“I need to go bathe so we can leave,” he said but I was more focused on the treble in his voice instead of what he was actually saying.
And then it clicked!
I was literally standing between the man and the bathroom door and he needed me out of the way so he could pass.
A rush of heat and blood flooded my cheeks and even though I couldn't see myself right now, I knew I'd as red as ripe tomato.
“Oh, I'm sorry. I'll be downstairs,” I finally found my voice as well as my beaten down dignity and I hightailed out of there, but not before I caught that stupid smirk that tells me he knew what he was doing.
