CHAPTER HUNDRED AND THIRTY-SIX
**TESSA'S POV**
I ran from the crowd, my mind awash with fear of what could have happened.
“Your highness, you need to slow down, the baby!” Theresa yelled at my back as I overtook her to the ship's bicycle.
“How do these things work?!” I screamed, forcing her to run faster to program it.
I knew I was putting fear in the people, which I shouldn't have but I couldn't help it.
As we drove back, my mind was whirling with insane scenarios of possibilities. Was it his council or regional heads? Did someone else betray him? I thought it was just Corbin, maybe there were others.
I had no idea why anyone in their right senses would try to harm him, that was purely suicidal. He kept this ship afloat and is responsible for getting their planet back so why hurt him?
He explained how his life force was tied to the ship so as we moved, I noticed the spot on the ship growing wider and wider.
It was the longest ride of my life and by the time I ran to the Royal quarters, I was out of breath.
“Xavier?” I called, confused at his stellar health.
He was running towards me with the elders behind him and he looked to be flakey? I couldn't put my hand on it but something was wrong.
Also, he ignored me and ran past me towards his room.
“What is happening?” Zyx echoed what was on our minds.
There was another Xavier on the ground, writhing in pain and the other one disappeared into his body.
I walked towards him slowly, groaning, burning a fire in my lungs.
It was easier to be pissed at him while he's strong and prancing around, giving orders
But in this state, he was the most vulnerable I'd ever seen him.
I turned to the ky’rhans in the room who were still in shock.
“Can someone get a doctor!?” I screamed, shaking them out of their stupefaction.
I turned to the other edge of the bed and that's when I saw it.
Tulips.
Now it all made sense. Somehow, he'd been able to split himself in two so one part of him could keep the people in line and not have them panicking at his absence.
Before anyone else could see it, I slowly pushed them under the bed. If these selfish pricks found out that he put the entire ship in danger because of me, I'd be getting death threats all over again and this time, I won't have the protection of planet earth around me. It'll be me and a ship full of angry ky’rhans and there'd be little he could do to help without turning against them.
But still, as I climbed onto the bed and grabbed his face in my hand so he could look at me, I felt immensely guilty.
Why did I have to blurt out my favorite flower? I should have been fine with the rose, the cut on my finger had healed so fast I was shocked.
“Why is he not healing?” I wondered out loud, making the regional heads pacing around the room to pause.
“Let me see,” Lyra-en said, and I moved aside for her to examine him.
“Why is the doctor taking forever to show up?” I groaned, Xavier’s pants of pain burrowing a hole in my heart.
I watched her peel off his clothes, a knot tightening in my chest at the sight. I had to remind myself that this wasn't the right place to be jealous.
We looked him over but there was no sign of an injury on his front. He healed really fast so it made no sense why he'd be in so much pain. He didn't even recognize anyone around him at that moment.
“Roll him over,” Kaid said and I helped Lyra-en roll him over and everyone gasped at the ghastly sight.
“He's been poisoned,” she said after getting over the initial shock.
His back was torn to shreds by something pointy and the injury was literally breathing, giving the look of it deteriorating. I wasn't sure what hurt more, the fear that this would be permanent or the fact that whatever happens afterwards would completely be my fault.
Thankfully, the door pushed open and the doctor that usually treated me rushed in, a stethoscope in hand.
“Shit!” He exclaimed and we moved aside for him to pass.
“Strange,” Lyra-en said as she bent down next to him. “This sand is foreign. Where did he even go?”
“And why? Whatever he went to get must have been important for him to not inform anyone about it before leaving.” Astrum added, also coming around to check the sand.
My heart was in my chest, the doctor was checking Xavier for probable solutions and the elders were digging into the why of the whole situation.
“Or did he tell you where he was going, Your Highness?” Zyx asked, making everyone’s attention to focus on me.
My heartbeat must have been faster than that of the spaceship we were on but I remembered to calm down. These people could detect lies.
“I saw the other version of him just as you all did. I have no idea what was happening,” I replied, moving closer to the bed. “Please doc, talk to me. Is he going to be okay?” I swiftly changed the topic and thankfully, they all took the bait.
After all, his survival was more important than anything else. Our lives depended on it, literally.
“He's been poisoned by an alien life form and we need to extract all his blood while replacing it with something stronger,” he replied as he cut through his clothes, leaving him bare
“Stronger? Who the hell would have superior blood to him? He's our king for a reason!” Kaid exclaimed and I could feel the tension in the room.
“Look, let's move him to the clinic and set him up with some liquids while we figure this stuff out, okay?” He said and immediately, the men helped move him and we followed suit.
Halfway out, I turned around and went to lock the door.
“Did you forget something?” I asked Lyra-en who was also heading towards the room.
She was shocked as we crossed paths.
“Oh, it's my hairband but I just felt it's pull on my head,” she replied hastily and walked back the way we'd been coming from.
Of course, she was trying to figure out where the sand was coming from, my earlier explanation wasn't going to make them stop suspecting something was afoot.
I locked the door quickly and rushed back to the clinic, my heart in my chest.
