CHAPTER TWO HUNDRED AND TWENTY-SIX
TESSA’S POV
After the hectic feat of hiding the ship so Xavier and our army could get in to Zorvath undetected, I set about touring the entire ship to figure out how it was run in details.
I wanted the ship to be in good shape when they came to get us.
I realized our food supply was extremely low and rightfully so since we were supposed to have been here two weeks ago. Feeding a population of this size wasn't something that could bea managed. We either had food or we didn't.
And in the next six hours, the answer to a rumbling stomach would be excuses.
Finally done, I realized it was evening already and I went in with Xander.
I knew the war was going to take a while but we'd been waiting all day for some kind of news but we'd heard nothing.
At some point, I felt a pang in my chest and I knew Xavier had been hurt.
He's promised to come back if anything got out of hand so I calm myself down because he was literally untouchable.
But then I remembered all the time he'd been indeed touched.
These people had been scared of his return for decades, he was feared even before he was born; I would assume some sort of weapon had been created specifically for him.
I took a deep breath and focused on bathing my baby who seemed to realize that something was wrong.
He kept growing faster than most children his age would but I was assured it was normal.
It got to midnight and yet, there was no response.
I couldn't sleep or even read any of the books scanned into my head anymore. I already knew most of them anyways.
I took a walk into the human quarters and was pleased to see normalcy return back to them again.
Although there was no party like before since some of us were also in the army, it was that sense of camaraderie and the delicious smell of macaroni and cheese that greeted me as I walked in.
“Your Majesty, any news?” A woman who I assumed was the mother of a human soldier asked me.
“Nothing yet, Ma'am but I'm sure we'll hear something soon,” I reassured her with a smile that was fake from the depth of my heart.
But it was the best I could do under such circumstances.
She smiled at me ruefully, feeling as helpless as I did.
I teleported to Roe's room, I didn't want to have to lie to anybody again.
I thought they'd be asleep by now but then I remembered Lisbeth’s boyfriend was also part of the troops so it made sense that she was wide awake, staring into nothingness.
The last time she'd been with a man, he was a grade A asshole and now that she finally found love again, he'd been sent to fight an uncertain war. She'd be devastated if anything happened to him, hence her vigil.
Roe on the other hand had her finger gripped in her little baby's palm. Brennan was the perfect baby boy.
“Hi guys,” I whispered when I realized nobody noticed me, they were that deep in thought.
“Oh! Tess, you're here,” she replied, sitting up. “Any news?”
“Well, radio silence as has been all day so I'm getting really antsy and scared,” I expressed, finally able to come clean to the people who will never judge me.
“I don't even know why they didn't go with you and the new girls. You all obviously have this power thing down to a T. He's supposed to let you go with them,” Lisbeth vented, her frustration evident.
She'd been crying too. That much was obvious.
“You have a point, Lisbeth but remember the last time we left the ship to the hands of another. We're scared of taking that chance again,” I explained calmly.
“The whole point of not using the ship was to protect it but also to give them a chance by stealth. All of that is obviously not working since you're capable of protecting the ship. On the other hand, if they'd not been discovered by now, then what even is the point of staying here,” Roe said, heating me up with some words to think about.
“So you're saying, in essence, we should go and get them?” I asked, the idea making sense by the second.
“She's got a point Tess,” Lisbeth added. “You're very strong and we've seen what Lily can do so let's go and get our men. I don't even mind going back to earth if this damn mission doesn't work. At least we aren't looking for food,” she finished.
“I'll sleep on it, okay? If by morning, they're not back, I'm pulling out of this damn space and going after them,” I promised, meaning every word of it.
They bade me goodnight and I teleported back to our room.
His smell was still pungent on the sheets. Memories of our lovemaking filled my mind as I wrapped my body and our son on the bed, hoping I'd wake up tomorrow with that broad smile of his, greeting me
***
When I awoke the next morning, I was hearing a buzz outside of the room.
I quickly took a shower because I knew I might not have a chance to do that for the rest of the day
Although it was the quickest shower I'd ever had, it helped to calm the raging storm in my head a bit.
I dressed up and rushed out with Xander in his wheeled cot.
Immediately I got outside to the recreational area where the noise was coming from, I cleared my throat.
“What is going on here?” I asked.
I barely interacted with them so it was awkward as hell for me but I had to put on a brave front. They could see the key of the ship right on my chest so respecting me seemed the right choice.
I just wanted it to be easier too so I kept that regal air Xavier always had on him
Instead of speaking, they all parted for me to walk past and I did, wondering what the problem was.
I got to the window they were all watching and to my surprise, one of those drones we'd shot down was hovering above the window.
The moment I got close enough to try to figure out, the drone began refolding itself until all that was left aas a wide screen.
Then a video began to play for all of us.
It was of Xavier
And me was bleeding profusely while on the ground.
