CHAPTER SEVENTY-FOUR

I'd gotten home ahead of Xavier who said he needed to deal with something back at the office and I was changing into something more comfortable for dinner when Anna knocked.

I knew she was the one because no one was that excited in this entire mansion. Sometimes, I feel like shaking life inside them so they don't all keep walking like prim and proper zombies forced to work.

I pushed away some things from the path so she wouldn't stumble on the room decoration props like I did when I got back and her knocking intensified.

I finally opened the door to my sister who was acting like she'd taken one of the opiums the royals control the rest of the aliens with.

“Did Teslim ask you on a date or something?” I ask, wondering what's so energetic for her. I went to school and I always wanted to be carried on a stretcher afterwards.

“What? Oh, he's already done that. Told him I had something with you. That's not it, guess, guess guess,” she gushed like a crazy woman, making me laugh out loud

“Wait, you told the boy that you've been crushing on that you had something with me? What's wrong with you girl?” I asked in surprise as I rummage me closet for something to wear

For some reason, I felt like dressing up tonight. Judge me, you're absolutely right, I'm being foolish. But hey, if we were all wise, the world would be boring so I'm taking one for the team.

“Nothing and since you're not gonna guess, I'll just tell you straight up. I found a Jacuzzi!” She shouted in excitement.

Was my sister going crazy? I looked at her eyes with concern and a little bit of fear. My mother would be sad forever if anything happened to her, especially under my watch.

“What are you talking about?” I asked calmly, hoping I was wrong.

“I said I found a, oh! You don't know what it is. Come on, let me show you!” She shouted, dragging my hand.

“Calm your horses, little explorer. We have to go to dinner first so come help me pick what to wear first,” i pulled her back and she was near stamping her feet but I gave her the big sister look and she humphed before going through my closet like everything in it was filth.

Who would believe we were just two years apart? The girl had more fashion sense than me by a wide berth and maybe I was the crazy one for not knowing what a jacozy or whatever she was talking about was.

She finally found a gown for me and I smiled widely.

It was made of soft and expensive cotton that gave off that vibe of I want to try to look beautiful but not so obvious so I don't come off as dramatic by dressing up for just dinner in my own home.

I liked the sound of that though - my own home. It didn't feel like one until Xavier declared the other day that we were going to make a love story just for us; not for the people or for the crown but just for us.

I wore the gown, it had buttons from the neck to the end which was just below my knee and it cinched in my small waist and the wow factor was the open space at the back that made me look so innocent until I turned around.

Wow, I was a gunner for real. I felt giddy at just a simple dress and he hasn't even shown me that much interest. Fearing I might become addicted to someone who didn't like me that much, I took a deep breath and walked away from the floor length mirror in my huge closet and joined my sister who was tapping her feet impatiently.

“Someone is in a hurry,” I said with a smile.

Even though I was stubborn, I knew my sister was the wild one in the house and once in a while, it peeked out of her like this.

“I don't even know why you're not excited. Dad told us about this like three years back and having it just there in the back is driving me nuts,” she said, groaning hardly.

“He did? Refresh my memory,” I told her as I locked my room door with the extra key I asked Xavier for today. After what I saw on that social media app, I just feel very peculiar about my security.

I've even started chatting with my guards now and I'm hoping they are willing to protect me against their own people if Xavier isn't there.

It made me feel guilty that I was making friends with them with ulterior motives but what else could I do? These people hated me and yet here I was, parading myself as their queen. I can't keep waiting for Xavier to protect me all the time and I don't think I can ever defeat any of them myself so I needed to improvise.

“You're insufferable. Can't believe you've forgotten so easily,”

“Well, you haven't had the year I've had, Ann. Tell me about it so I can understand why you are expecting the elevator to operate like a private jet,” I snapped, irritated for no and every reason.

I needed to do something about the way I quickly transferred aggression to whoever was in my immediate vicinity. Theresa probably deserved it most of the time but Anna was just being a girl.

I sighed and pulled her ears, making her laugh and the awkwardness disappeared and then she launched into a tail of bubbles, massages, perfect water temperature and an amazing experience. The more she gushed, the more I joined her excitement and by the time dinner arrived, I was already fed from nerves.

But I missed breakfast again today and I decided to eat, the Jacuzzi wasn't running away. Yes, I learnt how to pronounce it properly or Anna would die of laughter. I'm a good big sister, aren't I?

“Chef, what's the occasion?’ I asked, shocked at the empty head seat but a large spread of Ribeye, roasted potatoes, melon bites, and so much more. The wine bottles were not spared as well, making me wonder if Xavier was close by or something.

The old man smiled at me as he added another dish, arranging it carefully before responding to me.

“It's the instructions of his Majesty so I don't really know. But you can start eating though,” he said before bowing and leaving, confusing me more than before.

I mean, why wouldn't I start eating? I didn't wait for Xavier on other days. We were either having dinner at the same time or not. Now that part of beauty and the beast resonated with me eerily.

So I turned to my sister who was on her phone and not aware of my mental predicament.

“Anna?”

She looked up.

“Let's go to the Jacuzzi. I'm not that hungry,” I told her and it was like a light bulb was switched on inside her and she trotted off in the direction of the gym.

I followed but my mind was still on whoever the spread on the dining table was for.
