CHAPTER TWO HUNDRED AND FIFTY-THREE

I adjusted my pants and sat down, going through the files I needed to present tomorrow for the annual interplanetary meeting.

We had progressed a lot from the last time the emissaries were here but I insisted on the meeting happening elsewhere.

I wasn't ready for them to see us yet so even though they were all gearing up to come here and assess our progress, I had put my foot down.

Instead, I was going to fly out to Naru, the forest-filled planet, for the meeting of the year.

The one that had happened earlier wasn't counted because it was impromptu and a way for the planets to stay in the know about what was happening around them; especially the abrupt change of a King.

Some of them had also come for my coronation and expressed their happiness to deal with a king who wasn't just concerned about having power but using it for the good of his people. I will always have Tessa to thank for that.

All those months of her demanding I behave right and treat her and the humans right, I always knew she was right, but my pride and self-sabotage blinded me.

But the moment I came to the obvious realization that I was also a man as much as I was a ky'rhan, I decided to stop letting my father win.

I remembered his words to me in that test room, I didn't even know I was feeling guilty about it, but in hindsight, I really was, and it hindered me in a lot of ways. It was why I didn't kill Corbin immediately, scared to add more guilt to the already piled-high one.

But he nearly cost me my family and I knew it was time to let him go.

I reminded myself that he and his accomplice were dead, I'd eaten his heart raw and thrown his body into space, and I watched it disintegrate.

He wasn't coming back to haunt me and even if he did, I was stronger now, mentally and physically.

I also had a huge army at my command.

That was one of the things I had worked on in the past few months.

I would be leaving the planet for two days from tomorrow and I didn't expect Tessa to be the one fighting any form of intruder.

We have a solid army now and they will defend us. Our technological advancement was also one of a kind. Aisen, the Drak, had lent us some of his engineers in appreciation for sparing his life.

So I was pretty confident things were going to be fine. Still doesn't stop me from being apprehensive.

I gathered the files I needed for my presentation and placed them in my bag.

Tess always packed my bags for me, but I didn't want her to go through that stress this time, so I was doing everything to make sure it looked perfect.

Where I and Xander were concerned, she was a core perfectionist and if I didn't arrange this bag accurately, she'd bring out everything and start all over.

Pregnancy looked amazing on her but it also turned her into an obsessive mother hen, refusing rest like it was poison.

I knew these two days would be hectic for her and she'd barely rest, hence I was going to force her to rest today.

I got a knock on my door and I quickly closed my briefcase and put it aside.

“Come on in,” I called out and five people walked in, two of them being Tessa's friends from her captivity in Drokos.

“Greetings Your Majesty!” Kayan, the military commander saluted me, to which I gave him a curt nod. He still maintained his job because he'd done a three-sixty and began treating my queen like her word was law. When I learned he was one of the reasons she was hell-bent on going through the test, I sent him to the cold south for a few months.

Now, for the natives there, their skin was designed for that and they had learned to survive there. But for a ky'rhan like him who was used to the sun and light rain in the capital, it was torture. His mission was a three-month-long one, and when he came back, he was more respectful to my wife and women in general.

So I gave him his old job back with a better title.

“Howdy, General,” I replied to him while arranging my table again. I knew I'd have more work waiting for me when I got back so I didn't want to freak out when it all got mixed up.

I hated paperwork more than anything but it was important, unfortunately.

“The top soldiers you asked for, Sir!”

“Hmm, that's impressive. How did you determine they were the best? Especially for this mission.”

“So I picked one of each specialization; you're already more powerful than any other creature we've seen before, so they're simply to cover you in the case of an emergency. Major Liam is specialized in weaponry, and his precision with his shots is exemplary; Sergeant Gordon and Sergeant Aran are our best in hand-to-hand combat; Sergeant Jackson is extremely intelligent and can predict body language to a T, and he can be your right-hand man on this journey.”

“What about the other lady?”

“Oh, pardon me, she's your trump card. We've honed her ability, and now, she can make everybody sleep, but with exemptions. It'll give you time to escape possible ambush without casualties on your side.”

“That's impressive; you all get ready; we'll be leaving by 10 am,” I told them, and they all bowed before leaving.

I was also bringing one of the doctors certified by Memphis.

It wasn't a military operation quite alright, but I was going into strange territory, and I needed to be prepared for eventualities.

I finished packing and gathered my belongings, heading out of the office.

“You can close early, Zara, I'm going to meet my wife and won't be accepting any more visitors today,” I informed my secretary.

“Thank you, Your Majesty!”

“Don't sound too excited, one would think you don't like working with me,” I teased him, walking away as he began spluttering for a response.

I checked my tracker again for the umpteenth time today, I couldn't wait for her to get her gift.

Hopefully, it came right on time.
