CHAPTER FIFTY-TWO
I didn't know how much I cared about him until that moment as he yelled as though he was being chased by a demon. He seemed to be genuinely confused about choosing his crown over me as he kept calling my name and pounding on something that sounded like a desk.
“I'm sorry, Please Tessa!” Xavier begged some image that a machine was projecting to him just like it had been doing for the last ten minutes.
“Why won't he just choose the crown? It's like the easiest part of all of this. She's a human, ugh..” a female ky’rhan complained and I looked at her upon hearing her voice and she was looking at me with a look of disdain.
“It's obvious the human has charmed him,” a man standing next to him concurred and everyone began murmuring while staring at me and some were even pointing.
“What's happening?” I asked, holding Corbin extra tight as I got scared.
“They're just feeling irritated that he chose you instead of them or their daughters. Don't worry, no one will come close to you,” he said with a confidence I didn't feel.
“Are you sure? We were attacked before when they didn't even know who I was and I doubt you'd want to get into trouble for me,”
“Of course I will protect you with my life. I know you would have chosen me if he gave you a choice so I still feel what I feel for you and I'm not gonna let them hurt you, I promise,” he assured me but his words made me feel weird.
I had kissed Corbin in a moment of confusion and honestly, I was so pissed at Xavier that I wanted to do something to hurt him as he'd hurt me but I and Corbin never spoke about the incident and this was our first interaction afterwards and it was obvious that things had really changed.
He was wrong but I wasn't going to correct him, not when he was the only barrier between me and a mob that was forming the longer Xavier was taking to make a damn choice.
Hearing his screams again made me want to cry in sync with him. He was suffering so much and it was all because of me.
“I’m already feeling quite special and important and would appreciate it if he just did what they wanted so this would end. I don't understand the prolonged suffering,” I grumbled.
“Knowing Xavier, he's probably looking for a way to have the two at the same time and he's gonna find out that it's impossible to do that. The earlier he makes a choice, the better for him. Once that machine realizes how important you're to him, it'll simply make things more difficult,”
“Shit, it adapts based on reaction?”
“Exactly. Hopefully he makes a choice before the time runs out. If that happens, he'll obviously be a King but..”
“But what? Why did you stop talking?” I asked him, noticing how he was looking around us.
The murmuring had grown into blown arguments at this point and we had receded into the middle of the guards we came with but I still felt like someone would bring out a Glock and put a bullet through my head.
Corbin brought his head down but to whisper something to me but I misinterpreted it and moved away too quickly, and I saw the hurt on his face.
“I'm sorry, I felt your breath in my ear and it felt weird,” I explained quickly.
“Y'all haven't even fucked and you already can't stand the thought of anyone touching you,” he said with irritation.
I ignored his jab, understanding where the hostility was coming from. Even though he knew we were never going to be together, Corbin was nice to me at the beginning but these days, it seemed different; like something was different. It seemed being bipolar was something they all dealt with considering they had two beings living in one because they were always switching up on me and it only served to make me feel more lonely.
“Anyways, I was trying to tell you that if he doesn't choose before the time runs out, he'll be crowned but he'll spend the rest of his reign trying to prove himself to his people just like his father did,”
“Really? Who was he trying to protect?”
“His Luminari. It's the same thing at every coronation. Everyone gets the same test at the last stage. Your ky’rhan’s most treasured versus the crown. It's all about your strength and how much you get to control your inner beast. It would be more difficult for him because his human actually likes you a lot,” he grumbled
“So Xavier wasn't aware of this?”
“The trails are only taught to kingmakers. My father was one and he hated it so much just like the rest of them do. So each time, they try to make it as difficult as possible because their son gets to become King,” he explained.
The thought gave me a better understanding of why he's in a love hate relationship with Xavier. They might be friends but their parents were trying so hard to pit them against each other.
“But you are not interested in being King, right?” I asked him.
His facial reaction was unreadable but he paused for a second before replying.
“Naa. Too much work. I can't wait for him to win so I can be relieved from this whole stiffening experience. I want to go back into the world, the capital is so fucking boring,” he grumbled flippantly.
Xavier called for my digital form.again with a guttural sound that made one think he was physically being impaled. I guess I now know how he'd react if anything happens to me.
Then suddenly he went quiet, making me tense in anticipation
“You've got to do something, Corbin. He's been at this long enough,”
“I wish I could help out, I really do. But he's quiet now so I will guess that means he's made a choice. Whatever it is, we'll find out soon,” he replied, frustrating me more.
I took a deep breath, hoping this won't go badly, the experience had been harrowing and I was damn ready for some good news.
Almost immediately, I heard a shrilling sound from a microphone and I looked around for the voice but couldn't find it.
“All bow to King Xavier, the first of his name, the King of Zorvath and Earth, the leader of all Ky’rhans and humans, the Messiah, the great ruler sent by the old gods!” The voice said loudly and everyone bowed and I awkwardly joined them.
“When you become Queen, you won't have to bow or kneel with us,” Corbin whispered to me and I nodded.
Then we all got up after a few seconds and I was wondering why we were bowing down without seeing who we were bowing to.
I looked up at the tense crowd and they were all looking at me weirdly.
“I don't understand why they are all looking at me like that,” I asked Corbin who was on his Mobile device and saying something to a guard.
“Oh, you're supposed to stand in front of him with the other women. Whoever he allows to catch him will be his queen,” he directed me.
“But we're already married. Why would he choose anyone else?” I asked, honestly confused with the new rules.
“The problem is that he won't actually be in his right senses. He's been through a lot in there so he might simply walk to someone else, thinking you're the one,”
“What will happen when he realizes she's not me?”
“One of you will have to die so make sure you keep eye contact with him or else you'll be condemning one of these dumb girls who think he's actually not in love with you to their deaths. That's not a good way to begin your reign,” Corbin finished and went back to his device while I stood there processing the fact that yet another crap has been dumped on me.
I began walking to the spot marked for me and I saw all the young girls who I'd seen in the crowd sneering at me as they began trooping to the front as well.
Then I heard the sound of the door creaking.
Well, here we go.
