CHAPTER SIXTY

Every part of my body was strung with tension as the microphone was handed over to me.

The entire stadium went so quiet you could hear the breaths of the person next to you without straining your ears.

I raised up the mic to speak into it and it made that loud, shrilling noise that only served to make my nerves more frayed.

Then I felt a hand at my back, encouraging me and even though it came from the same person who had put me in this difficult situation, I took the comfort for what it was worth.

“Good day, My new family,” I spoke with a tense smile and the crowd cheered in response.

I guess I was off to a good start.

“Through strange but very welcome circumstances, I have been chosen and blessed with the wonderful position of being your Queen,” I continued and they chanted again, making me smile genuinely.

Maybe they weren't so bad…

“Today, I was briefed on my day to day activities and I must say, you're in for a great ride with your new rulers. You're lucky and extremely blessed to have a King and Queen that's focused on achieving not just greatness on this planet but extraterrestrial achievements all around the cosmos. For now, you might be restricted to Earth but very soon, you will be able to go everywhere else but earth,” I said, entering the dangerous zones of my edited work.

Xavier’s hand on my back had hardened and I knew he was confused at what I was saying.

“Due to the undeniable fact that I am indeed a human, you can do well to expect that I will not only be looking out for your interests and the best of it but also making sure humans are taken care of. In finding a new family, I refuse to throw away the old but to find a synonymous way for us to be happy, together.” I finished and handed over the mic while taking a step back.

My back suddenly felt cold from the absence of his touch and I could feel him glowering at me in anger.

Meanwhile, the crowd had erupted in confusion, some people happy and others, well, a little bit violent but I had passed my message across and I didn't care what the consequences were going to be.

“What our new queen is trying to say is that she's dedicated to making sure you are placed first before everything and everyone else. I mean, you don't expect her to throw away her origins, that would mean she's a terrible person, right? But you, my great people always come first,” Xavier said, placating the crowd and they were back to cheering again for him.

It looked so easy for him, moving the crowd to his whims just like he had done the first night he got his new powers.

“For coming tonight and for being such wonderful hosts, everyone here gets a free ton of Nexarion!” He declared, exciting the crowd and confusing me in return.

I'd never heard of the name and was going to ask him what it was but his attitude showed that he was pissed beyond measure.

I knew I'd crossed the line with my act of defiance as we finished up and he dragged me, literally into the car angrily.

I knew he'd never physically hurt me but for some reason, his words always managed to and he knew that and was probably plotting to say nefarious things to make me cry.

And just as I'd predicted, the moment we got into the car, he began berating me like a child.

“Do you know what would have happened if I'd not saved your ass?” He shouted.

“I didn't like what the ending part insinuated, okay? It made me look like a sellout!” I exclaimed, close to tears.

“Well, you're either going to be a sellout or dead!”

“And I don't care! You won't let me live and you won't let me die either! You've got to stop being such an asshole to me at some point,” I said tearfully.

“You are a disappointment, so I don't see that happening anytime soon. You couldn't even do the main thing I asked of you this morning. There's no way we can leak it to the public that you're pregnant because you were busy trying to show me how stubborn you can be!” He shouted, his driving scaring me more than his voice and anger.

“You're not thinking clearly, Xavier. Please calm down,” I pleaded, really scared for my life.

“What do you mean I'm not thinking clearly, huh? Was I the one who literally offered myself to a bunch of selfish ky’rhans like a burnt offering to be hated on? Why are you making my life so difficult?” he lashed out.

If there were speed limits on the road set for fifty, he was at a hundred and fifty and the more he screamed at me, the faster he drove.

I pulled my legs to my chest, holding the seat belt tightly as he drove like a maniac.

“I'm sorry, please slow down,” I begged him.

If the car totalled, he'd definitely be fine and dandy but I wouldn't survive it.

I didn't want to die today.

“Xavier?” I called to him, my voice small and scared and I realized my fingers were trembling.

Finally he glanced at me and his face changed from rage to what looked a bit like remorse.

Immediately, he began to slow down but I was already sobbing, fear stricken and emotionally hurt.

“I'm sorry, I didn't know I was going so fast,” he grumbled an apology but I couldn't say anything, I was trying to get my emotions to calm down.

I couldn't believe he'd made me terrified of cars too.

The moment he packed in the garage, I sprinted out of the car so fast, my heels in my hand.

I ran into the house, my feet tearing from the interlocking of the compound and how hard I was rushing out of his presence but when I got into the living room, there were guards everywhere.

The look on their faces made my heart palpitate.

“What's wrong?” I asked and they all turned to me with an equally terrified expression.

“Um, Your Majesty, I…” Gerald began and they all kept looking at him, waiting for him to finish even though he was finding it difficult to talk.

“If he's too tense to talk, can't someone else say what's wrong?” I snapped at them, and I saw the moment it occurred to them that I was now someone they had to actually answer to but I was more concerned about why there were over twenty guards in the living room with cold air all over.

Immediately, Xavier walked in and he felt what I did when I walked in as well.

“She asked you guys a question, why is it taking so long for someone to talk?” He asked, more calm than I was.

“Your Majesty, it's his Ma.. former King Seth,” Bernard finally spoke up, his eyes swollen.

“What about him? What happened to my father?” He asked in shock and I could see how much he was attached to the man even though he was a terrible person.

I guess it was one of the reasons he had changed towards me; he'd had to take the empire that his father had built from him because the ky’rhan tried to take my life and virginity.

But I guess the thought of something happening to him had him feeling things he'd shoved aside in order to finish what he'd started; becoming king.

He pushed past me and began walking in the direction of the dungeon before Bernard stopped him in his tracks with something that sent cold shivers down my spine.

“He's escaped, your Majesty,” he whispered and I had to find the next chair to sit down.
