CHAPTER HUNDRED AND SIXTY-EIGHT
I shut my eyes tightly as I braced for the impact of the fire, terrified of what was going to happen.
But the blow never came.
Instead, I felt liquid pool down my legs, panic overwhelming me.
“Baby, did you pee yourself? You really wanna protect us so much,” Xavier said, turning the chair around to drag me up. “Come on, let's go and get you changed. Our guys can round up everything and bring the prisoners in for questioning.” Then he took the walkie, “Zyx, one of the portals are open, come get this mask I got from them and head over there. Find any of them with a pulse and bring him. Zanyr, once Zyx is safely in here, take us out of here immediately, alright?” He commanded and everyone replied.
Meanwhile, I was feeling pain in my lower belly and a heartache that rivaled what I'd experienced when Fanny put me in the torture room.
I didn't know what was happening but Xavier realized something was wrong with me without me saying anything and quickly called Doctor Memphis.
“It's urgent,” he said into the phone, his tone filled with some of the panic I felt in my bones.
If anything happened to the baby, I'll go crazy, that was for sure.
Which seemed imminent with every step I took.
Xavier wasn't strong enough to attempt what he did earlier and I knew if I tried it, I'd probably end up in outer space again, searching for air that wasn't there.
So we waddled together towards the clinic which Memphis was already setting up after I told him what was happening on the phone.
The “shit!” he exclaimed afterwards was still ringing in my head as I crossed over the threshold into the room.
“Please call Rose for me,” I told a guard who took five seconds to process the information. “My friend? The only human that comes to see me with her sister?” I explained further before he nodded furiously and ran off.
“Doc, what's going on?” Xavier asked as he helped me walk towards the bed.
“She's going into early labour so you might have to start working on an incubator, Your Majesty,” Memphis said, making us all look at each other in shock.
“What do you mean labour? Even by your words of faster development, there's still one month left!” Xavier exclaimed, his shock showing.
“She has gone through an incredible amount of stress today and I'm even shocked she's still standing. The baby is gaining sentience and is getting erratic so we need to prepare her for birth right now,” he rushed out as I felt another sharp pain, making me stand straight up, my eyes bulging out of their sockets.
“Let's get you on the bed, Your Highness,” a female human nurse came to my side, helping me towards the bed.
Gradually, I lay down, groaning in pain with each movement.
It was like the labour pains weren't the only thing hurting, my body was experiencing burnout.
“Xavier, you're gonna have to take the ship's control,” I whispered, praying he'll be strong enough to keep us safe in the case of any attack.
“Shit, km sorry. I completely forgot,” he said, rushing towards me.
I brought out the tiny, shiny key and placed it back in its place and it seemed to make him stronger; it recognized it's home.
Another spasm hit me, and I couldn't hold back the scream that tore of out of my throat.
“Memphis! Do something!” Xavier screamed, sending everyone into a frenzy as Xy’thern took over, looking for a threat to terminate.
Only the threat was his son trying to tear out of my womb with erratic movements.
“Amara, give her the epidural before he cuts off our neck,” Memphis commanded one of the nurses as he kept going around, working on some sort of machine.
“My Zhilak,” he rasped, coming close to my face and I noticed the tiny fins close to his ears for the first time. He was breathing through them as he tried to pacify me.
I rarely spent time with him alone so I hadn't taken in all his mannerisms and it was crazy I had noticed that while I'm labour.
He cupped my face, placing his head atop my sweaty one and humming a familiar song. The one Xavier had played for me in the star gazing room the other night.
It was crazy to imagine that it had happened just last night and yet here we were, about to bring our child into the world, prematurely.
“Ahhh!!!” I screamed into his face as another contraction, this one trying to split me in half, attacked my body.
“My Zhilak!!” I heard Xy’thern yell into the room, scaring everyone.
I wished I could hold it in but the pain was crazy and the movement in my body, foreign.
The door opened and Roe rushed in, running to my side even though Xy’thern was growling near her.
“Why isn't she on an epidural yet, do you want to kill her? Don't you know your Ky'rhan babies are extremely large and rough to humans during birth?” She yelled to the panicked nurses standing on the other side of the room, one with a syringe in hand and the other urging her to go.
“He's.. he's going to..” one of them stammered, pointing towards Xy’thern.
“I'm standing right behind him and he's not chewing me to bits so come down your Job,” Roe yelled at them, showing that Mama bear side of her she'd always had
“Roe, I think it's because of what.. happened with Doctor Fanny,” I croaked out and Xy’thern's growl confirmed my thoughts. I gripped the edge of the bed as the pain came again.
I looked at the doctor and he made signs at me, confusing at first but then I understood what he was saying.
Essentially, Xy’thern had to be induced to sleep or this birth was going to be more difficult than necessary.
“Xy?” I called to him and he was by my side in a moment. “Baby, you're scaring the.. nurses and..” I tried to stop the scream that erupted from my body but it seemed this child was throwing a last hurrah party in my stomach before coming out. “LET XAVIER OUT!!” I screamed at him, hating myself afterwards for the sad look on his face as his human form materialized.
“Baby,” he whispered, touching my face.
“Please help me apologize to him, I didn't mean to yell at him like that, I swear,” I begged, feeling terrible emotionally and physically.
“He'll understand later love, don't worry about hin for now. Nurses, quickly,” he commanded.
“Thank the old gods you're back, Your Majesty. I need you to come work on this now, it's ready. Your son will be out very soon and we need to get this ready before he's born.”
As he rushed out from my side, the pain gripped my soul again, my best friend trying to soothe me as the nurse finally made it over.
This was hell.
