CHAPTER SIXTY-ONE

“WHAT DO YOU MEAN HE'S ESCAPED? IS HE A RAT?!” Xavier screamed at his trembling guards while I watched, my mind swirling with thoughts of how badly this might end for me.

The man lost his throne and his son because of me. He already hated me before now, but with the current situation, I doubt I'll be able to relax knowing he was unaccounted for and I knew he'd be coming for me soon.

Meanwhile, Xavier had begun a manhunt for his father, the guards all doomed with how much anxiety he was dishing out.

They couldn't explain how it had happened and all the CCTVs had been disabled for fifteen minutes so it was obviously an inside job. It just wasn't clear who would have been so loyal to the old man as he was definitely not the most likable ky’rhan.

Xavier burst out of the hallway that led to the dungeon, his mood worse for wear.

“Go to your room and don't come out till I let you know it's safe. Something is wrong and I don't want to be worrying about you too,” he commanded and my stomach responded to him, and I blushed a deep shade of red, remembering I'd not had anything but my emotions for food the whole day.

“Sorry,” I apologized sheepishly, properly embarrassed.

“It's nothing, I'll have Theresa bring you something to eat. Make sure you use the peephole in your door to check who's on the other side before opening it,” he warned and I nodded, running all the way into the elevator.

He had successfully put the fear I'd been battling deep into my bones and I hoped the ky’rhan was caught as soon as possible or I'll wither from tension and fear.

I quickly rushed into my room, using the electronic key card Xavier had handed me yesterday and I realized my room had been arranged, making me realize I wasn't the only one that had access to the room.

That didn't settle well with me and it made me deeply worried about how deep his relationship with Theresa actually ran. I wasn't in love with him or anything but until stated otherwise, he was my husband and I wasn't comfortable with the idea of his former mistress being my servant.

I proceeded to remove my clothes and put them in the laundry basket.

I was going through the motions of preparing for bed when I heard a knock before the door opened and I stood frozen for a second before I realized it was Theresa with the food she'd been asked to bring.

“Thank you,” I said as she dropped the tray of delicacies on my bedside table.

“It's no biggie. Do you need me to help you prepare a bath or anything else?” She asked, her voice toned down, unlike it had been this morning and the previous days.

“Nothing at the moment except my room card. There's someone out there releasing prisoners and with how you're quickly switching loyalties these days, I'm just not comfortable with that,” I told her, stretching my hand out for the card.

“I'm not sure why you'd think I'll betray you like that but His Majesty asked me to keep it in the event that you lose yours,” she explained.

“You don't know why I'd think that, really? Did you just insinuate you're not aware of what you did to me right after declaring your undying loyalty?” I shouted angrily, my mind not able to wrap around her nonchalant attitude towards her actions.

“I don't know what I did to you. You just woke up one day and started giving me an attitude and then fired me. I had to plead with His Majesty to help me beg you,” she replied and I was shocked at how she'd twisted the whole thing.

“Wait, is this the version you told Xavier? That I woke up one morning and developed an attitude and suddenly sacked you?” I asked, taking a step forward, if only to understand the betrayal or the feigning of innocence.

“Yes. I was going to ask you what I did wrong but I was so busy and it got out of hand,”

“Oh you were busy? With what exactly? Because if memory serves me right, since your new bestie came into this house, I've not seen you anywhere near me and you can't expect me to become a whining little princess and come over, demanding for you to do your job so what on earth where you busy with because it wasn't me!” I demanded, fed up with her attitude already.

She seemed to have lost her tongue or her attempt to gaslight me wasn't working and she was probably trying to switch to another tactic which I would definitely be ready for.

Finally understanding why Xavier refused to sack her both saddened and confused me. To believe such a nonsensical perspective about me without even asking me about it kinda hurt.

“I just think this is a big misunderstanding. I'll never betray or be disloyal to you. I was just looking after Lisa, she was new to this job and I was trying to put her through and I completely forgot about my major duty which was you. Can you ever forgive me?” She begged, pouting ridiculously.

I couldn't help the laughter that burst out of me.

It was hysterical and prolonged, the entire day summarizing into this one crazy moment.

That's what she was going with? Nice!

And the whole touch of pouting as though I was her lover or something put the icing on the deceptive cake.

I suddenly remembered she wasn't aware that I'd heard her conversation with the girl that night and I knew I was going to enjoy the moment she discovered I did.

So I finally stopped laughing and sat down on the couch close to my closet door. Weird choice, I know but I'm going to make this room a home soon enough but I digress.

I called her to sit closer to me, wanting a closer seat to the emotions on her face.

One would think she was the eighteen year old in this situation but what made me different was probably the touch of the gods thingy she'd mentioned that night. They expected a docile, foolish human and weren't prepared for me, the total opposite of that.

“You're right, Tee. All of this is a big misunderstanding. So let me get this straight, Lisa was employed here for what exactly? Like, who's she exactly?” I asked, a facade of calmness on my face.

I couldn't wait to tell Anna about all of this. I'd had to hold her back from confronting Theresa as she watched her show off her new friendship with Lisa. Anna was always quick to be friends with my friends and I suspected she and Theresa were spending time together and seeing this new development actually hurt her feelings and not just because it's directly happening to me.

“She's His Majesty's cousin and needs a job. Her parents are actually hoping for her to get married to someone around the capital,” she explained and I noticed her eyes twitching and I took that as my sign to go for the kill.

“Wait, you mean Xavier was having a full blown romantic relationship with his cousin?” I exclaimed, the full shock of a 2030 Hollywood actress on my face.

And I had to hold myself back from smiling when I saw her face morph from confusion to confusion. She couldn't keep up her facade anymore and I saw her go through so many emotions and her inner blue furs were popping in and out of her face and neck.

“Theresa? Is there a problem?” I prodded.

“He asked me to keep quiet about it and I needed to keep Lisa away from you so she doesn't get all jealous and probably attack you or something. I swear I was doing it for you,” she pleaded but I wasn't having it.

“If you were really my friend, Theresa, the moment that bitch walked into this mansion, you would have come to me and given me every tiny detail about her devious self but instead, you decided to play a weird game and I have a feeling you're still playing it so please, save your explanations. I've had a shitty day so hand over the damn card and leave!” I ordered, my voice pouring out the day's frustrations.

I didn't care that she was caught in between two people, if she made a damn choice between the both of us, she would have had an easier time.

She quickly handed over the card and ran out of the room and I went about my nightly routine.

But as I was dressing up, a strange sound came from my room, making me imagine the worst.

I grabbed a mopstick that I'd found in the bathroom and tiptoed to the room, hoping tonight won't be my end.
