CHAPTER FIFTY-FIVE

I perused his demeanor and I noticed how different he was. He wasn't as robotic and stoic as he was yesterday and it seemed his emotions were back to normal. It seemed staying away from me was making him happier.

As he passed by me, he stilled for a second, inhaling my scent but he quickly shook his head and walked into the room.

“Sorry, the room's a bit scattered, I thought I was late,”

“A queen is never late, everyone else is just early,” he replied, his gaze focused on me.

For a moment, it felt like we'd both lost our ability to speak, both of us taking each other in. I couldn't help myself from looking him over. His tunic flowed all the way to his feet, but the way it hugged his features made my mouth water.

Apart from possibly being the sexiest alive, he was just beautiful. I'd never noticed it but he had a tiny dimple in his right cheek which I guess was hidden because he rarely smiles but as he left himself unguarded while taking a look at me, I noticed it. A part of me wanted to make him smile, but I squashed it like an overgrown bug. I wasn't going to think anything of this man that exude power and sexiness by simply donning a well tailored, golden tunic.

I made to move to the chair at his back but he started, as though I was about to hurt him or something but I guess he was just snapping out of his mind and the things going on in there.

“Sorry, I was thinking about something. I simply wanted us to be on the same page so you know what to say whenever you're asked,” he began, his voice sounding less husky than before.

“Sure. What new curve are you throwing my way?” I asked as I walked over and sat down.

My response must have shocked him because it took him a few seconds to respond.

From the confused and smitten look he'd given me before I sat down, it turned into the one he had been giving me all week.

“We're obviously just going to be married in name only. I trust you to be a good queen so I'm not worried about that but I'll find a human girl that would have a child for me and we'll tell everyone it's you. The search is already on, I just wanted you to be aware of it,” he dropped the bomb with a straight face but I on the other hand was having a mental malfunction as a result of his words.
“Wait, what do you mean? Do I disgust you so much that you'd rather have someone else give birth to your children?” I asked, standing up and walking up to him.

“You won't be able to carry my children. It's too risky, you're going to go with the storyline I've designed. You're sick and your pregnancy is different from that of every other ky’rhan. So you'll not be seen for the last three months. So from today, you'll start showing signs of pregnancy at the public rally we're going to later in the day. Is that clear?” He commanded.

“But Xavier, what's really going on? You literally switched up on me without any reason. I even thought we were moving forward,” I asked, exasperated.

“No we're not. Let's get going, Marina, my secretary is going to show you your responsibilities as queen before we head to the rally,” he said, his tone one of finality.

I wordlessy followed him out of the room, his words haunting my thoughts.

I was shocked and confused. On one hand, I was definitely not ready for motherhood but I had always had it in mind that I'll be a mother at nineteen. I mean, Roe is currently carrying her first child and she's going to give birth soon so his reason didn't make any sense.

Also, I didn't like how he was trying to make me a stepmom when there was no need to. The other ABCs and moderates did it because alien girls having children for them had a high chance of producing XYZs and no one wanted that. In fact, the only reason there were still many XYZs was because they had lots of children without control. One mother can have seven and no one paid any attention to them. They were probably trying to have as many numbers as humans had so they'd also have an edge in a world that has been divided and pitted against each other.

I wasn't ready for a child quite alright but I wasn't ready to be a stepmom or a fake queen. I saw how Xavier treated his own step mother, and that was going to be my future if this plan of his worked out.

The problem is, there was nothing I could do about it.

Many in my situation either got a wicked ky’rhan who would take what they needed from human women and discard them or a knight in shining armor.

I got the prince of them all and he was hell-bent on driving me crazy with confusion.

I got into the car and we were driven to a tarmac where different types of planes were.

It was my first time ever being in one and I was quite apprehensive.

Flying things scared the shit out of me yet here I was, about to be in one.

A guard opened the car door for me and I got down.

Xavier linked our arms together and I realized he was playing the role of a dutiful King and husband because people were gathered at the other end of the gate, waving at us.

I was about to raise my hand to wave back but he shook his head.

“Don't do that,” he commanded.

“Oh. Um, can I know why?” I asked. I hated how timid and small I sounded there.

“You have forgotten so easily? You're supposed to be tired and feeling nauseous. Haven't you seen a pregnant woman before?” He snapped at me.

“You said I was to do that at the rally and how am I supposed to be acting anything when you are literally running with me in your arms? I'm tired of your confusion, Xavier,”

“You will address me appropriately in private,” he demanded.

“I will never do such. If you want it so badly, use the power you have over me. You already went back on all your words, why not go all the way?” I challenged him, finally having enough.

I hoped he didn't take my bait but I was terrified he would. Xavier was highly unpredictable, perfectly doting on me one moment and flippant and rude the next, frustrating me.

I waited for the tingle of his control to come, my body tense.

We climbed the stairs to the translucent jet, the blue swirls on it giving it an otherworldly feel.

I'd seen the two winged planes and jets humans were flying on before the aliens came, and this was different in so many ways.

The jet can contain only four people apart from the pilot and as I sat down by the window, I realized Xavier hadn't said or done anything to me.

I heaved a sigh of relief but it was short lived.

The jet revved before lifting off the ground, and it flew off at a speed that I could barely see anything we flew past.

I was tense, my heart beating in quick succession and I felt a bead of sweat from at the base of my neck. I'd never flown before and if I'd known, I would have worn something entirely different because as the jet kept flying, I began to hyperventilate, my breaths coming in short spurts.

All of a sudden, I felt a hand on mine where I'd gripped the seats so tightly.

I looked up and I realized he had his face thrown to another direction but his hand on mine anchored me, reducing the fear and trepidation I felt.

But I knew not to confuse his thoughtfulness for kindness as I knew what would happen the moment we got down from the jet.
