CHAPTER TWO HUNDRED AND ELEVEN
Every second that passed increased the tension in the ship as well as the uncertainty.
I hated how it made Xavier look in the eyes of his people; he was usually this self-assured, confident King who got things done without problems.
This particular problem made no sense to us all. He was the only one with the knowledge of how to deal with space pockets, at least in the real sense of it.
He just gave me a hazy explanation as he taught me about spatial awareness and manipulation.
“What can we do?” I asked him as he stood in one spot, staring deep into space. He looked sadder than I've ever seen him, and with his unshaven face and dull eyes, he seemed rattled too. Even his tail was unmoving.
When I spoke though, he came out of it and walked closer to me, his eyes filled with worry
“Do you feel any different? You've been connected to the ship before. If it's close by, I can try teleporting to it and move it out,” he suggested.
I frowned at that thought. We didn't know if the ship had been driven out of here intentionally by enemies. Abandoning it was a big risk and with the way our luck had been going, it seemed the worst had happened.
“I do but it's faint. Maybe it's because I didn't have it for long. Do you feel it too?”
“I can't, something is blocking my view,” he said with a groan.
I could see what he was talking about, he was filled with worries and a fear he wasn't allowed to display.
“Come,” I called to him, ignoring the stares from all around the room.
I dragged him inside even though he was reluctant to follow but I needed him to focus.
I closed the door behind him and proceeded to hug him tightly. He didn't respond at first, but gradually, he wrapped his hand around my shoulders.
Then he started speaking.
“I just… they're depending on me and I'm failing them. I'm failing you, I'm failing our child, our people, our future, I don't even know what to do,” he vented, his eyes cast to the ground.
I pulled back and carried his face in my hand. I had the urge to kiss him but we had an army waiting for us to come up with solutions.
“You do know what to do, Xavier. You've been doing an amazing job all the while. You're allowed to have shortcomings and doubts. You're allowed to bend, fall, and be confused. It's that part of you that makes you a little more like me. But it's not a weakness; it's what makes you stronger, amplifies your powers, and broadens your reach in life. So reach deep into that amazing mind of yours and be the husband I fell for who swore to make life better for us.”
As I spoke to him, I could feel that cloud in his head begin to dissipate.
I messaged his neck and encouraged him to close his eyes and do some of the exercises he taught me.
After a few minutes, the color returned back to his handsome features. Somehow, I loved the beards he'd grown since this journey. I'd miss them when — if — we got back to the ship.
“You're amazing,” he whispered before opening his eyes.
“I love you too,” I replied with a smile and kissed his open chest.
His smile radiated into my soul as he delved his fingers into my hair. I no longer started when my hands came close to it in fear of an implosion of pain.
“But I need your help again,” he added.
“Okay, what do you want me to do?” I asked, happy he was leaning on me.
“I need to access your mind.” I frowned. “Look, your mind is superior to mine, and we don't really have the time for me to reach you how to search across the vast area here, so I want to do it myself through our mental connection,” he explained further.
Normally, I won't mind but since poisons were poured into it, I'd been feeling quite protective of it.
But then I remembered how important this was and I needed to see my son. There didn't seem to be any other way anyway.
“Okay,” I replied with a deep breath.
“Thank you so much baby,” he said and kissed my forehead, and ran out to the cockpit.
I heard him tell them he needed to try something with him so they wouldn't be wondering what was happening.
He came back and he sat down on a chair and pulled me to his lap.
“Breathe baby, I promise I'll never hurt you. You can trust me.”
“I trust you, I'm just…”
“It's okay if you don't want me to but it's the quickest way. That's why I suggested it.”
“You can start, I don't want to think about it further,” I told him and took a deep breath.
Then he grabbed my face gently in his hands, pulled me closer, and began kissing me, slowly and calmly.
Gradually, my worries and reservations dissipated.
Gradually, I felt a probing in my head, but my guard was too tight and he got kicked out immediately.
“Sorry, let's try that again,” I replied while lowering my guard intentionally.
“Take your time, okay? Don't feel pressured,” he advised and I breathed deeply in as he thought me before letting him try again.
Then he took the same steps again and I felt his presence probe in, slowly and with hesitation.
He finally got and went into my memories first.
He was supposed to go past it and was doing that but he paused and got deeper into it, which deepened my frown, adding to the discomfort I felt while holding my guard down for him.
He didn't explain this part of the process so I didn't understand what was happening.
Then he pulled a memory out of the millions of bubbles in my head, a feeling of pain radiating from him.
It was me having dinner with Aisen.
