CHAPTER SEVENTY-ONE
I had expected Xavier to be putting actions to his words after the whole romantic thing two nights ago but apart from bringing my mom flowers and the occasional pecks on my cheek, he'd been pretty much absent from my life.
I sighed, getting ready for whatever the life of a queen was going to be bringing my way today. I loved the fact that I was actually given something to do that contributed in its own little way to the running of the planet rather than spending all my time in the pool or wasting away.
The fact that I got up every morning and dressed up in something fancy always made all my worries minimal because I had something else to look forward to.
“Someone looks delicious,” Anna said to me as I stepped out of the elevator, making me smile genuinely.
“You're not in school yet?” I asked her, checking my new watch to see the time.
I was already in the process of decorating my room and I decided to get some other personal things, one of which was the beauty circulating my wrist. Even if Xavier was playing ping pong with my heart, his black card wasn't and I wasn't going to feel bad about spending his money considering everything I was going through.
“We're on something called Thanksgiving Break. I guess it's one of those holidays these aliens brought in to glorify themselves but hey, I don't mind not having to peel off gums from my locker and notebook for a few days,” she said in a funny way but I knew she was really hurt.
“I'm sorry, love. I hope it gets better. I really don't want to come there and make things worse,”
“Naa, I'm super strong and Teslim has this liquid thing he gave me that dissolves them without completely ruining my books,”
"Amazing," I said, smiling. "But Thanksgiving is actually a human thing. Speaking of which, why don't we invite Teslim over for dinner this Sunday?" I kissed her hair, making her giggle and push me away.
“Fine, hopefully you don't start planning a wedding like Mom,” she said, rolling her eyes.
“We just want him to marry you before he discovers you like to chew your hair while sleeping,” I taunted.
We both burst into hysterical laughter at our own silliness before I finally left, heading to the Tarmac.
Xavier was already in the jet, busy on his device as we drove off.
I was still a little bit scared of the ride to the office but with each trip, my heart beat erratically a little less than the previous.
I brought out my own device as well, not wanting to allow my mind to plague me for being thousands of feet in the air.
I decided to go through my tiny contact list and began calling Rose again, hoping she'd be the one on the other end of the mobile this time.
But as usual, it was a man that picked and before we could go over the whole back and forth, the device was snatched out of my hand, leaving me stunned.
“Who are you!?” Xavier shouted into the phone, scaring the shit out of me.
His possessiveness was on a whole other level, which was weird because he'd been acting like I didn't exist for the past two days.
The fact that he thought I was talking to another man was crazy and considering the voice was unfamiliar to him, I can imagine how far his thoughtfulness went in the few seconds of me talking to Rose's baby father.
The person on the other side said something that I couldn't hear even though I pushed my head in his personal space. I did keep it there for personal reasons.
“Oh, well where is she?” he asked the man.
Their conversations began getting interesting as information that I'd been seeking for since the day after my wedding was finally coming out.
And the best part was that it also made him livid. I'd been going crazy thinking of how else to convince him to help me save her after he rejected my plea the first time but now that he'd confronted the situation directly, he was more than ready to do something about it.
"We're doing you guys a favor, the very least you can do is treat these women with respect and kindness. How on earth are you hurting the person giving birth to your child?" He shouted at the person and I could imagine the shock going on at the other end.
He was probably giving him all the gory details because he expected Xavier to be worse than his father but getting this reaction gave him a reality check.
“Councilman Rick, your human is my wife's best friend so I'll be sending a driver to your house immediately to pick her up. If a single hair is missing from her head, you'll be eating bread and water with my father in the royal dungeon!” He commanded and cut the phone, his demeanor turning me the fuck on.
I took the phone from him, not making any attempt to say anything even though I was brimming with excitement. I had to hold back myself from jumping into his arms in happiness.
Finally, Roe was going to be free and happy and I'll make damn sure of it.
I was still impossibly close to him, my earlier annoyance with him evaporating and as we got closer to the Capital Secretariat building, he put his hands around me and I sighed in contentment.
I knew I was supposed to be holding back for him to show that he had really changed and was going to win my love and all but something at the back of my mind was telling me that I'd gone ahead and fallen for this hot, Alien Prince now King.
We got off the jet and he held my hand all through the myriad of people requiring his attention and asking a whole lot of questions and clarifications about whatever.
I on the other hand was traipsing next to him like an airhead, my mind in the clouds at how wonderful our future together would be.
But someone mentioned something that caught my attention and I scrunched up my face at his reaction too.
The man asked about the pods carrying subject 2v500 to subject 3b200 if they were ready for dispatch and I knew I'd seen those numbers somewhere before. I just couldn't place my hand on it quickly.
Xavier had given him the world meanest stink eye and the young man nearly disintegrated in fear and went all the way to the back, making me wrack my mind harder.
His hold on me tightened as we got to the elevator, the only person left with us from the crowd that were waiting at the Tarmac being Marina. I knew something was going on but I couldn't place my hand on it and I didn't want to ask stupid questions so I plastered a smile on my face as he kissed my forehead and wished me a good day at work.
Like a spark, the numbers attached to the countless names and pictures I'd seen behind those doors came back to me and I finally remembered.
Now, what did they have to do with a pod?
