Get In, Doll!

His question was answered when the man cocked his head to the side and his face came into view. Xavier felt his blood run cold at the recognition of the man.

The bastard. What the hell was Elaine doing with a bastard like him? How dare he, in fact? Deciding that he had enough of the bullshit, he pushed the car’s door open and stormed out, heading toward the entrance of the restaurant. Once the doorman saw him and the expression that settled on his face, he quickly opened the door and let him in, realizing that there was going to be trouble. Anywhere Xavier Romano was, there was trouble.

As he strode deeper into the restaurant, his gaze locked with Elaine’s whose eyes widened when her eyes fell on him. She let out a tiny gasp, the fork of meat that she’d been bringing to her lips colliding with the table with a loud clang, catching the attention of the man astride her.

“Are you okay, Elaine?” George asked, his voice laced with concern.

“I…I..” Her eyes followed Xavier until he got closer to them. Frowning at the sight of Elaine looking behind him, George turned, his eyes immediately falling on Xavier who reached them with two last strides.

“Mr Romano.” He stood up to greet him, offering his hand for a handshake which ended up hurting as Xavier didn’t bother to take his palm. He returned his hand to his side and cleaned the sweat in it on his pants.

Xavier passed him a glare and grabbed the wrist of the still-stunned Elaine. “Keep your hand to yourself. I’ll take it that you’re not dumb so I’ll say it. Stay away from her, I’m warning you. I won’t warn you twice boy.”

He pulled Elaine from the chair and dragged her to himself. George's face hardened and he stepped forward. “She doesn’t want to go with you so stop being a dick.”

“Whether or not I’m a dick, you better heed my warnings and stay the fuck away from my wife.”

He held on the wrist of Elaine tighter and began to lead her from outside of the restaurant.

“Xavier, what are you doing? Let go of me,” she screamed in disagreement as he held her past the eyes of the other people in the restaurant. Before Xavier could force her into the back seat of the car, Elaine finally pulled away from him and pushed him aside. “The fuck? You can’t just come from nowhere and take me away. I was having dinner with someone.” She rubbed her wrist, soothing the redness that had formed from Xavier’s tight hold on it.

“You’ll stay away from him,” he deadpanned.

“Why are you here?”

“Shouldn’t I be asking you that? I was passing by when I saw you laughing the hell with another man. You’re enjoying his company, are you not?” He was filled with rage and anger at the thought of his wife enjoying another man’s company. That man was George Miller. The man was bad news and with the way Elaine wrapped her hands around her chest in defiance, he could tell that she wouldn’t believe him. She was still as stubborn as ever.

“I…I… what I’m here for shouldn’t be your concern, Xavier. My business no longer concerns you.”

“Fuck, it does. You will stop seeing him and that’s final.”

She turned her back to him, attempting to walk away from him after rolling her eyes but she only took a few steps before his hands shot out to grab her arms and push her against the wall, his eyes darkening.

“What do you want, Xavier? Just let me be.”

“Is he your new boyfriend?” His hold on her arms was so tight that she flinched with each second that passed. Anger enveloped her. She didn’t have the chance to examine his appearance and how perfect he looked up close after so many weeks. It was their first time seeing each other after so many weeks and the first thing they could do was fight. She didn’t have the chance to notice how his gray three-piece suit looked so good on him or how his hair was messy yet looked so good on him.

“He’s not.”

“Don’t you fuckinv dare lie to me.”

“I told you he’s not. And even though he is, what is it to you? Why do you care?” Her voice raised. “You didn’t care all these many weeks ago. Why do you care now?” He didn’t care when she waited for him to show up in her apartment day and night. He didn’t care when she cried herself to sleep every day after losing the baby. He didn’t care even though he knew that she was a grieving mother. He simply just abandoned her.

“You’re my wife!”

Elaine clamped her eyes shut. Wasn’t she his wife when he abandoned her? “You abandoned me. I get it that we were only in such an arrangement for that long because of the baby that was why I sent the divorce papers. Sign it and let’s get done with our relationship.”

He pressed her further into the car and gritting his teeth, he spelled out. “You will not speak about divorce again, you hear me?”

“I will. You don’t have to continue the arrangement. We should free each other from this.”

“Who said that I abandoned you, doll?” His voice softened. “It was simply space. I gave you space.” His fingers traced her cheek down to her lips. “If you think that there is a way to break up, you’re mistaken. From the day you signed our marriage certificates, you signed for forever. Do you understand?”

Elaine’s body trembled and she found herself unable to hold her tears any further. Her tears began streaming down her cheek freely. She couldn’t even stop them. With a croaky voice, she whispered. “The baby…”

“It’s fine. We’ll find a way out of the situation.” Releasing her from his grip, he continued. “I think your break from this relationship is over. It’s time to return home. Get in the car!”

“Huh?”

“Get in the car, doll.”
