Elaine Hates Her
“This is all your fault, Elaine. Mother is lying in the ER all because of you.”
Elaine stopped struggling, her feet rooted on the floor at her sister’s words. She stood still, staring at Ria in disbelief.
“Don’t stare at me like that. I’m simply telling the truth. It’s all your fault. You're the one who drove mother to that extent. If it wasn't you mother wouldn't have had a hard time. You're the cause of all our troubles.”
“How am I the cause? I wasn't there when this happened.”
Ria threw her head back in laughter. After her laughter died down, she continued. “She doesn’t know.” She turned to Emily who stood behind her, massaging her head. She doesn’t know that even in her absence, she still causes us worry every single day. Someone, please inform her.”
“You’re just trying to push the blame to someone else and trust me, that person isn’t me because I know nothing about what’s going on in that house.”
“You would know if you care.” Ria stepped closer, trying her best to intimidate Elaine. “If you cared about Mother, you’d know what’s going on. All you do is slut around the city to keep up with your gold-digging act.”
“Slut around?” Elaine sneered. “We both know who’s a slut here. The baby in your womb is proof.”
That aggravated Ria and with a yell, she darted her hands forward and pushed Elaine backward, her body hurling away from her. Elaine’s eyes widened so the force of the push sent her backward and she ended up losing her footing but before she could land on the floor like Ria plotted, a hand wrapped around her waist, stabilizing her.
“The fuck you just did.”
Xavier’s voice echoed in the hallway, his voice emanating anger. The sight of him caused Ria to coordinate herself, her chest heaving.
“Mr Romano. She started it.”
“And you dare to push her? You better thank your stars because if I hadn’t caught her on time, you’d be out there with your maker.”
Her legs trembled, head lowering. “It wasn’t my fault, it’s Elaine’s fault, all the time. She caused Mother to be where she is.”
Elaine grunted. “Stop saying it already.”
Emily grabbed Ria’s arms, turning her to face her. “Stay calm, Ria. What the hell is wrong with you? Don’t forget you're pregnant.”
“Let me be. If anything happens to Mother, she’ll pay, I swe…” She clamped her mouth shut at a glare from Xavier.
Elaine shook her head, her head snapping to the ER’s door when she saw it open. A male, slightly short doctor stepped out. She immediately rushed to him.
“Doctor, how’s my mother?”
The man nodded. “She's out of danger for now.”
Elaine sighed. “Is she going to be fine?”
“I can't say yet. We’re going to monitor her health for a while, maybe twenty-four to forty-two hours. All you have to do is pray for now.”
She nodded, giving way for the doctor to pass.
“What happened?” She turned when she heard Xavier’s voice behind her. He was asking Emily.
“Mother has been down ever since she found out Elaine was pregnant. Not because she wasn’t happy but because… because.”
“Because what?” He pressed.
Ria helped her sister with the words. “Because she thought that her dear daughter, Elaine, hates her.”
“What?” Elaine exclaimed, coming to stand before Ria and Emily. “What did you just say?” She asked in disbelief.
“It’s the truth. Mother thinks that you hate her because of what happened a few months ago and while fighting us about you, she had a heart attack,” Emily exclaimed. “We rushed her to the hospital immediately.”
Elaine panted, closing her hand around her mouth. It was false. She didn’t hate her mother, she never hated her. She’d only been hurt about everything, about her mother turning her back on her when she needed her the most. She’d only been angry at her, nothing else. There was no hatred harbored in her heart and no matter what happened in the past, the woman was still her mother and gosh, she still loved her to death, nothing was coming between that.
“I don’t hate it. It’s a misconception,” she let out, putting her body weight on Xavier. She needed as much support as she could get.
“That’s not the issue at hand right now. The money for mother’s treatment is quite expensive and… and you know the condition we’re in right now.” Emily angled her body to Xavier. “If it is not too much to ask, Mr Romano, our mother is lying and fighting for her life, a cheque for the bills would be very much appreciated.”
“How much is it?”
Emily and Ria’s eyes widened.
“One million.”
“One million.” They replied at the same time, awaiting Xavier’s response.
Elaine gasped at the amount. It wasn’t like the money was a problem, it sounded ridiculous for the hospital bill. From the look on their faces, she could already tell they were trying to fraud Xavier.
Goodness! What won’t her sisters do? Their mother was fighting for her life and they still had the energy to try and extract money from Xavier. She could tell it was Ria’s idea. Only she would think of something so ridiculous, trying to get money from them all in the name of hospital bills.
“One million?” She asked just to be sure.
“Yes.” That was from Ria. “Don’t tell me you can’t give us just a million naira.”
“I’ll settle the bills and other necessities here in the hospital.”
“You’re going to write us a cheque?”
“Who said anything about writing a cheque? You need money to settle the bills, is that not right?”
“Of course.”
“And I said, I'll settle it. At the hospital department.”
Ria faked a laugh, stepping forward to Xavier while tucking her hair behind her ears. “The thing is that we’ll like to pay the bills under our family name and not yours. If news goes out that we’re too broke to pay our mother’s bills, things might escalate, you know.”
