The Creditor
“Ahh, I see.” She examined Ria's body, a frown settling on her lips at the thin wrist and deep neck. Was it even possible for one to lose so much weight in just a day. Or was it that Ria had always looked this thin and she was only just noticing? “Are you sick, Ria? You know that you can talk to me. I’m your sister.”
“Sister my butthole. When you’re done here, you can leave.”
She took out another cigarette from the box and lit it up. Before it could get to her lips, Elaine snatched it and threw it to the floor, stomping it off with her foot.
“Elaine!” Ria roared.
“Don’t yell. Have some respect for your big sister. I’m only looking after you.”
She scoffed, grabbing her hair with her hands and pulling it sharpling for a while. With a last pill, her head snapped to Elaine, her eyes biting with such fury that should make anyone take to their heels. But not Elaine. She sat still on the same spot and gazed at her sister. “Your looks aren't going to make me leave. Drop it.”
Ria’s expression turned normal. She combed her hands through her hair. “Don’t try to act like you care, Elaine. Because I know you don’t. All you’ve ever cared about is your husband, his family and your company. You never cared about me even when we worked together.”
She took a pause, a deep breath before continuing, her eyes clamped shut. “You never cared about how I felt when you scolded me even for the slightest things, when I get compared to you all the time and when the employees talk down on me for working at my sister’s company. You never cared.”
“That is not true, Ria. I’ve always cared about you. We’ve always cared, everyone cared about you until you decided to let people’s words get to you. There hasn’t been a single day that I didn’t care. Behind the scenes, I scolded those who compared or tried to mess with your self esteem. And for the scolding, it was necessary. I only wanted you to learn.” She knew that people say things all the time.
While Ria learned at her company, she taught her a lot of things including not letting people’s words get to her but at the end, she just did whatever came to her mind. Behind the scenes, Emily had yelled for everyone of those people who compared and tried to harm her sister’s self esteem. Her intention was to make Ria stronger and matured. But as they say, hardwork is never really appreciated.
Ria let out a mocking chuckle. “Learn? Well, I only ended up learning how to become a bitch that I am right now. Just leave, I can’t handle your shits right now.”
“Believe it or not but you’ve always been dear to my heart.”
“Stop fucking lying!!” This time, her words came in a yell. She shot up from the bench and kicked her foot, her groans and the sound of waves the only sounds around them. “Stop fucking lying,” she repeated. “It’s getting old.”
“I’m not. Grow up already.”
“You grow up. You have to fucking grow up and know that these old tricks of yours isn’t going to work at all. If you’re trying to get me to your side, then it’s futile.”
“I’m not. All I came to say is that you still have a chance, it’s not too late yet for you to come into our open arms, Ria. We can continue being families and forget that this ever happened.”
“Fuck off. I don’t need to lick your butt before I survive.”
“You don’t have to. Just know that the doors of our houses are open to you but if you’re not going to come in, we’ll close it and you’ll probably regret it. Give your heart a chance once more to think, a chance to choose what it truly wants, otherwise, don’t say I said no advice.”
Ria’s stubbornness was becoming something that she was fed up with. It takes a bit convincing of her for her to get tired and worked up. The ball was in her court now. Ria’s.
“The ball is in your court now. Choose if you want to remain a schemer for the rest of your life or you’d want to be one happy family with everyone again. Bye.”
Patting Ria on her shoulder for a while, she wound around but her feet immediately came to a stop at the sight of five bulky looking ladies storming toward them. From behind her, she saw Ria trembling. “What’s wrong, Ria? What’s happening? Do you know these people.”
“I…I don’t. I don’t know them at all.” She stepped backward.
“Are you sure about that? They’re making their way to us.”
She stepped to stand beside Ria. Or perhaps it was the ghosts that hunted the ocean? It was way possible.
“I said don’t. You were leaving, right? Leave!!”
The girls got them finally, swinging the baseball stick on their hands. Elaine’s eyes roamed on their appearance. They were dressed in baggy shorts and tees.
“Oh here you are?” The girl in the middle spoke. She presumed her to be the leader of the girls. She slammed her stick on the floor and raised her head to glare at Ria, her eyes burning with something dangerous. “I feel like killing you at this moment. Where is my money, Ria?”
Elaine’s eyes almost popped out of their sockets at the mention of debts. Why the fuck was Ria holding debt when her mother in law was the Margaret? Since when did she start borrowing money to sponsor her lifestyle?
Goodness! She never thought Ria would get into trouble when she wanted to leave a while ago. Thank goodness that she hadn’t left yet.
Ria simply bounced her feet and scratched her nape, purposely stepping behind Elaine for support.
“Who are you girls?” Elaine asked.
“Why don’t you ask the little shit behind you. Bring her out or we add you to the black book!”
