Cooking Class
“You don’t want to know what I can do if I get angry, so I’m warning you, stay away from my husband and me. If you don’t, I’m afraid that you’re inviting trouble to yourself. I’m done keeping y’all silent. Do you hear me?” When they stood stiffly on the floor, unable to mutter a word, still surprised at the slap that she’d given a few seconds ago, she sighed. This is my last warning. I don’t care if you understood whatever I said just now.”
With that, she gathered her belongings in her hand and made her way out of the restroom. She let out a relieved sigh once she got away from the girls, her footsteps loud as she walked back to the cooking hall, heading toward her mother-in-law who stood in the middle of her friends.
“Mother,” she called. The older woman also grabbed her bag from her friend and turned to her. “I’m ready.”
“Then we should leave, honey. It’s going to be past twilight soon.” She cocked her head to the side to stare at Margaret. “Margi, we’ll leave now. Take care of yourself and the baby, okay? Your daughter-in-law must be spoiled to the fullest.”
“Of course, mother. I give her the best treatment ever. And since her baby likes shopping according to her, we get it done without a second word from her.”
“You’re the nicest. Bye, honey.”
“Bye.”
With her hands on Elaine’s arm, they made their way out of the hall, soon getting out of the building to the parking lot.
“Did the girls say something to you?” Noticing her unusually quiet behavior after she stepped out of the bathroom, the mother-in-law couldn’t help but ask.
“I took care of them. You don’t have to worry about me.”
“I can’t say anything except that they deserve it. It’s that way for these women. They say whatever that they want without thinking of the consequences.”
“I handled them in such a way that they’ll walk the other way when they see me.”
As they got closer to the parking lot, her feet came to a stop at the sight of the man who stood with his back on the car. Her brows shot up immediately and she stared at him in surprise.
“What’s wrong?” Noticing her stop, her mother-in-law asked. When Elaine didn’t reply, she traced her gaze and her eyes grew wide when they fell on the man by his car, his hands dipped in his pocket, his eyes covered with a thick shade.
“Xavier?” Mrs Romano wasted no time and sauntered to his side, wrapping her hands around his waist while his hands patted her hair and back. “It’s surprising. What are you doing here?” The woman asked.
“How have you been, mother?”
She broke away from the hug. “Everything is going fine. How is work.”
“As usual.”
“We’re here for a cooking class. Did you come to pick her up? I’m so sorry for taking her away for so long but we have a lot to catch up on. Your wife is a sweetheart. She managed to show everyone her cooking prowess on her first day.”
Xavier chuckled. “I told you, mother, she’s multi-talented, she’s heavenly. Did you tell Mother about the new dress design that you’re working on?”
Elaine’s cheek reddened at Xavier’s praises. A smile rode up her cheek at the mention of the new design that she was working on. Well, she’d been working on a new design for the past weeks that was yet to be launched and she couldn’t wait to bring her design to the world.
After the success of the fashion show a few months ago, her company had gone viral and they had more sales that brought about more partners and ideas.
“I didn’t. Once it’s launched, Mother would get the first.”
“That is so sweet of you, my dear. I can’t wait. Come on, go to your husband.”
Elaine dragged her foot to Xavier and let him embrace her, hissing the top of her head. She smiled. Afterward, she turned to her mother-in-law and gestured for her to go to her own car where the driver was already waiting for her.
Once the woman’s car was out of sight, the couple returned their attention to each other. She stretched her foot and pecked Xavier on his lips.
“How was the class? Did you enjoy it?” He opened the car’s door for her.
“Wasn’t bad.”
He turned round the car and got into the driver’s seat, started the car, and drove out of the building. “What did y’all make?”
“Korean hotpot. Mother is a pro at it and she gave me some tips. According to the instructor, she said that I made the best hotpot. She was surprised as it was my first time. As for the other women, urgh, they’re a pain in the ass.”
“Hmm.” A deep hum of disapproval reverberated from Xavier’s throat. “Tell me more. Who do I have to kill?”
“A lot really. I’m not going to stop it. They’re so annoying that I almost had a full-blown fight with women. I think I’d prefer having a private class with just mother than the rest of the women.” It sounded nice. Private class with herself and her mother-in-law without the prying and judgy eyes of the women who were ready to take each other down won’t their words. “I made the meal in anger and I gave the food out instead of packing it.”
She was now regretting her choice of giving out the food to the instructor. She wished that Xavier had a taste of the food.
“Private class doesn’t sound bad.”
“It doesn’t.” She let out a tired sigh. “Now I’m hungry as fuck.”
“What would you like?”
“A hot bowl of noodles in the local shop.”
Xavier threw his head back in laughter at her words. “You’re crazy. But I’m crazy for you and can’t say no. Your wish is my command, my queen.”
