Ria’s Lie

When was the last time Elaine received a call from her sister, Ria? She couldn’t remember. She gently wiped the happy tears off her face and cleared her throat before pressing the green button to answer the call.

“Ria?” She called, her tone laced with questions.

She frowned when she heard a low shuffle from the other line followed by sobs and then a scream. “Ria?” She called again. “Ria, are you okay? Talk to me, what’s wrong?”

Elaine dashed out of the restroom. Finally, after enough sobs, Ria spoke. “Elaine.”

“I can hear you. What’s wrong?”

“Can I tell you anything?” Ria pondered.

“Absolutely. What happened to you?”

“I…I need someone to talk to right now. It’s urgent. I’m in a dilemma. It’s quite serious and I think I might die if I don’t talk to someone. My friend is out of town and it’s just me in the house.” She sniffed. “I tried to talk to Emily but she wouldn’t listen to me.”

“She refused?” Emily wouldn’t refuse to speak with Ria, right?”

“She said that she’s busy with her fiancé. You’re the only one who can speak to me right now. I think I’m going to die:” The sobs resumed twice as hard, Ria’s voice causing her great panic.

“Okay, okay, you have to calm down, Ria. You can tell me what happened.”

“I can’t speak over the phone. Please help me, Elaine.”

“Fine, just stop crying, okay? Text me the location and I’ll be there before you know it.”

“I’ll send it right away.”

Once the line went off, Elaine grabbed her coat from the bed and stormed out of the room, heading downstairs where she raced out of the mansion into her car. She started the car immediately and it accelerated like a bullet out of the mansion.

She sped through the road, heading to the location where Ria had sent her a while ago. She passed the highway and entered into a lonely street. After what felt like forever, she stopped in front of a condominium.

“This must be the place. It’s the same address.”

Getting the right parking for her car, she jumped out of the car and knocked on the high gates. “Ria, it’s me. I’m here now, okay?”

But there was no response from inside and she frowned after she looked through the walls and saw that the inside of the house was dark and looked cold. Was there no one inside? Besides, Ria was scared of the dark and she wouldn’t stay in a dark place. “Ria, dear,” she called again, stretching forward to look inside the house to see if there was any response.

When she got none, she placed her left hand on her hip and brought her phone forward with the other. She dialed Ria’s number only to hear that it was switched off.

“What the hell, Ria?”

She was beginning to feel skeptical. Plus the surroundings were dark and somewhat too cold for her. Suspicions began to grow in her mind. Why did Ria call her all of a surprise only to stand her up after she arrived? Why did Ria’s sobs previously sound so fake and staged? She hadn’t read any meaning to it at that time but now, it suddenly occurred to her.

But before she could act on her suspicions and flee the place, she felt a hand on her shoulder and when she turned around to see who it was, her neck was suddenly hit and the next thing that she was was darkness and then the shuffling sounds of footsteps as her body was dragged away, taken into a van which sped off the surrounding.

After the van was out of sight, Ria stepped out of her hiding place behind the streetlight. She dialed a number on her phone and placed the phone close to her ears. “I did as you asked, I hope I can be let go of now, Mr. George.”

A slight chuckle from the man filled her senses. “Great work. Where is she now?”

“Your men are on the way to the location with her. I hope that our business will end here. You must not give me a call and I won’t give you a call.”

She heard a sigh from George before he answered. “That’s right, our business is over. If you want more reward, come to me after this operation, we’ll have some fun.”

Ria didn’t want to know what the man said afterward as she quickly ended the call and hugged her phone to her chest, her heart pounding so hard in her chest as she gazed at Elaine’s car.

What kind of sister was she? Elaine had quickly driven to her when she heard her cry through the phone, Ria thought. She’d sped through the roads to get to her and what did she do? She’s handed her over to the evil George to do as he pleases. Honestly, she had called Elaine and cried to her on the phone, she’d wished that she wouldn’t come to her, that she would remember the evil things that she did and stay away.

But in the back of her mind, she knew that Elaine was definitely going to show up. She loved everyone close to her, whether or not good or bad.

The main question on Ria’s mind was whether- was she going to let her sister fall into the hands of the enemy just like that. Is there nothing that she could do that would bring Elaine out of the problem? Her heart finally softened. If Elaine could come running to her without a single thought, she knew that there was nothing the girl wouldn’t do and for that, she was grateful as fuck.

Plus she only agreed to George’s request because of the debt that she owed him.

Setting her mind on it, Ria dialed a number on her phone and texted it, tipping off the location of the operation to him. She wasn’t going to let her sister suffer so much when she could help. The days of their bad blood were over.

******

Xavier had a bright smile as he stepped into the bedroom that he shared with Elaine, expecting to see her around and when he didn’t, a deep frown settled in his forehead.

“Babe,” he called, his eyes scanning everywhere for any trace of her.

He stepped into the bathroom and when he didn’t find her, a sense of panic began to rise in his mind. He knew that she’d been home, after all, she’d texted him about it and her bag lay limply on their bed. Just as he was about to walk out of the bathroom, his eyes fell on the pink object that lay on the floor, a gasp escaping his lips in shock.

He took hastened steps and snatched the object from the floor, staring at it with a wide open mouth. He knew exactly what he was but he was having a hard time reading the result. What do two lines in a pregnancy test kit mean? He wondered. Deciding to use the internet, he brought out his phone from his pocket and searched for it online.

“Holy fuck,” he threw his hand to his mouth, “Fuck, fuck, fuck,” he repeated, his expression one of happiness and excitement. They were going to have a baby? His wife was carrying their child in her womb for the second time. Xavier wanted to scream even more but the thought of his missing wife caused him to pause and think of the situation.

He dialed her number several times but it only rang for a while and went to voicemail. “Now, where is she? We have to celebrate.”

He stormed out of the bathroom and the bedroom, moving over to his study room. Once he was settled, he typed in something on the computer, and the locations of Elaine’s belongings were displayed to him. He sprang up from the chair, combing his fingers through his hair in frustration. Her car was at an apartment many miles away, her phone was on the fucking highway, and her fucking jewelry we’re on the waters.

“The fuck!”

He felt his heart beating so fast and for the first time in a while, he felt fear, real fear. Elaine had been abducted again, while pregnant, and fuck, heaven knows he would burn the whole world if something bad happened to her. And somehow, he knew who the possible bastard was that dared take his wife away. And when he eventually finds him, there will be war!

His doubt was confirmed when his phone pinged. He tapped on the message, at the picture of his wife that was sent to him by the bastard- George Dean!
