Good Dog
Rigel stopped and slowly turned to stare at Beth with a brow raised in question. “Sorry?” He pretended like he didn’t hear her words in the first place.
“You didn’t hear? I said, why do you have to live next door to us?" You can be below or anywhere in the large building. Why next to us? It’s troubling.”
“I’m only doing what I was paid to do. If you are tired and want to leave Paris even before arriving, that can be arranged. We’ll send you right away,”
Beth immediately stepped back. She felt her anger for the man skyrocket and let out a groan of frustration. From the tone of his voice, she knew that he was serious about sending her away and if she agreed, he would send her away in no time.
“I can’t believe you.” She shook her head. “I only complained about you staying next door and now you want to send me away? How pathetic.”
“Or you should talk about how you’re the pathetic one. Cooperate with us and you’re going to live longer.”
“Or what?” She looked him dead in the eyes. “You’ll wipe me out of the face of the earth? Well, guess what, you can’t. Anyway, no one wants you next door. So much for a grumpy next-door neighbor.”
But Rigel didn’t want to argue with her any further. He simply just shook his head like he’d been doing since he met Beth with Elaine the morning, he began his way to the door and finally stepped out, closing and securing the door behind him. Once he stepped out of the place, Beth turned around to Elaine who was on a couch, and pointed to the door. “Did you hear him?”
Elaine raised her head from her phone and asked. “What?”
“That guy, he’s the worst. Why on earth does your husband have him as a right-handed man, goodness.”
“He’s good at his job, Beth. And he’s also nice. He speaks really well to me.”
“Nice?” Beth almost felt her eyes pop out of their sockets at the words that left Elaine’s lips. The man had been anything but rude to her, fucking rude. Yet she called him nice and good at his job.
“Nice my fucking butthole. He’s an asshole, girl. We should send him away.“
“He listens to no one else’s command than Xavier’s.”
“Urgh. He’s such a good dog then.”
“Stop..” The rest of Elaine’s words were buried in her throat at the pinging sound that came from her phone. She held the phone to her face and clicked on the messaging app, her eyes falling on Xavier’s test and she couldn’t resist the urge to roll her eyes at it. After everything, he still dared to text him. He must be trippin’ if he thought that she would reply to him like nothing happened.
She was way beyond pissed at the moment.
Xavier: Wifey
Xavier: Heard you landed safely. Had fun?
She rolled her eyes all over again and goodness, if she didn’t control how much she rolled them, it might become a habit. Goodness!
She decided to ignore his message but just as she decided that, another text came in.
Xavier: you’re not angry anymore, are you? I prepared fun things for you. When I’m done here, I’ll show up immediately.
Xavier: Say something, doll.”
Yet again, she ignored him but just like the first time, the phone vibrated again and she had to read the text of his.
Xavier: I’m sorry, okay? Believe me when I say that this is for our good. You’ll know later.
That was the last that made Elaine’s anger flip all over. He was becoming used to saying that he does things for their good. He always keeps her out of things for their good, he never involves her in anything for their good and she was finding it hard to control her anger. She sprang up from the couch and headed into one of the rooms, leaving Beth behind.
She began texting him.
Elaine: Don’t text me. Go to hell.
His text came in immediately.
Xavier: Fuck, I’d been worried for a while. Did you have food yet?
Elaine: Whether or not I had food is none of your business. If you’re done, get out and stop texting me.
Xavier: I didn’t think that you'd get angry because I’m not on a trip with you. Do you miss me so much?
Elaine: I don’t. After now, don’t ever text me or Beth again. Or else, I’ll block.
She waited for his reply and once she sent her text, she saw at the bottom the three dots that indicated that Xavier was typing. But after a while of waiting for his text to appear, the dots disappeared and her eyes grew wide.
“Where did the dots go?” She gasped. “Wait! Did he just stop talking to her when she was so angry? She couldn’t believe it.
She jumped slightly when her phone began blaring on her palms and she again brought it to her face, her eyes on the caller ID. She unknowingly let out a sigh of relief when she saw who it was and slowly, she swiped on the green button and brought the phone closer to her ears.
“What do you want now?” She grumbled into the phone, walked to the king-sized bed, and settled on it. She didn’t even have the chance to admire the beauty of the room properly before he called.
“I think Paris weather is good for you. Your voice sounds more seductive,” Xavier’s deep voice rang out from the other side, and dead lord, she found her anger already dissipating as his voice spread through her entire body. But he wouldn’t know that, right?
“Doesn’t sound good. I’m uninterested in your flattery.” She tried to sound angry and uninterested.
“You seem rather excited to hear from me.”
“You wish.”
“Can you switch this to video call, doll? I’m dying to see you,” he pleaded. “I’m at work right now, but I even can’t fucking concentrate. I’ll be good, I swear.”
